▣ Paterson Trailers
One of 2016's best-reviewed films, Jim Jarmusch’s latest narrative feature was also a critical hit when it premiered at Cannes. It's a low-key character study starring Adam Driver as the title character, a poet/bus driver in Paterson, New Jersey, where he lives a simple but fulfilling life with his wife (Golshifteh Farahani) and dog. This is Jarmusch at his most optimistic, wise, and rewarding.
▣ Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Trailers
Arguably the most pointless entry in the growing Star Wars franchise—but obviously still a huge financial success—this first stand-alone tale is directed by Gareth Edwards and set between Episode III and Episode IV. Felicity Jones stars as Jyn Erso, who is recruited to aid in a rebel mission to steal the plans to the Death Star. (Spoiler alert: they succeed.) Mads Mikkelsen, Ben Mendelsohn, Diego Luna, Donny Yen, Jiang Wen, Riz Ahmed, Forest Whitaker, and Alan Tudyk also star, and while their characters may be new to you, the film's overfly familiar plot beats and incessant fan service won't be.

▣ Hidden Figures Trailers
This well-received adaptation of Margot Lee Shetterly’s nonfiction book Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race stars Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monáe as Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughn, and Mary Jackson, three African American women who were crucial to the success of NASA’s Mercury and Apollo missions. Directed by Theodore Melfi (St. Vincent) and boasting a supporting cast that includes Kevin Costner, Kirsten Dunst, Jim Parsons, Aldis Hodge, Mahershala Ali, and Glen Powell, the film was nominated for three Oscars, including best picture.
▣ Lion Trailers
Another best picture nominee this year, Lion is based on the true story of Saroo Brierley (Dev Patel), who at 5 years old found himself lost in Calcutta. Unable to find his family, Brierley was adopted by an Australian couple, portrayed in the film by Nicole Kidman and David Wenham. Twenty-five years later, Brierley began his search for his family back in India. It's the debut feature for director Garth Davis, who previously worked on the acclaimed TV miniseries Top of the Lake.
▣ Toni Erdmann Trailers
The #4 highest-scoring film of 2016, the best-reviewed movie at last year's Cannes, and an Oscar nominee in the foreign-language category, this 162-minute German comedy is director Maren Ade’s follow-up to Everyone Else. The film chronicles the strained but loving relationship between Winfried (Peter Simonischek) and his workaholic daughter Ines (Sandra Hüller). Winfried’s attempts to get closer to is daughter involve an escalating series of practical jokes, culminating in the alter ego of the title, a “life coach” in a strange wig and fake teeth. Catch it now before the American remake arrives with Jack Nicholson and Kristen Wiig in the lead roles.

▣ The Founder Trailers
Michael Keaton's return to the spotlight after strong turns in Birdman and Spotlight didn't generate the same kind of buzz, though it's not a bad film. Written by Robert Siegel and directed by John Lee Hancock (Saving Mr. Banks), The Founder chronicles how Ray Kroc (Keaton) wrestled control of McDonald's away from Mac and Dick McDonald (John Carroll Lynch and Nick Offerman), who established the original fast food burger operation in 1950s Southern California. Laura Dern, B.J. Novak, Patrick Wilson, and Linda Cardellini have supporting roles.
▣ Split Trailers
M. Night Shyamalan’s horror film follow-up to The Visit is his best-reviewed feature since 2000's Unbreakable. Split stars James McAvoy as Kevin, a man with dissociative identity disorder. His 23 personalities have been kept in check, but a 24th is about to threaten the lives of three teenage girls played by Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch), Haley Lu Richardson and Jessica Sula.

▣ Catfight Trailers
Ever wanted to see Anne Heche and Sandra Oh beat each other until they’re bloodied? Then Catfight is the film for you. In fact, writer-director Onur Tukel (Summer of Blood) has them fight three times in this ungainly combination of ferocious physical comedy and savage satire.
▣ The Girl With All The Gifts Trailers
This adaptation of M.R. Carey’s apocalyptic zombie novel is set at a secure base in a near-future England where only a small group of children are immune to a fungal disease that turns humans into flesh eating “hungries." But one little girl in particular, Melanie (Sennia Nanua), might be the key to saving the world. When the base is breached, Melanie escapes with her teacher (Gemma Arterton), a sergeant (Paddy Considine), and a single-minded researcher (Glenn Close).
▣ La La Land Trailers
The shortest-tenured best picture "winner" in Oscar history at about 45 seconds, writer-director Damien Chazelle’s musical follow-up to his critical hit Whiplash is nevertheless one of the most honored movies released last year. Emma Stone, whose (actual) Oscar win was one of six for the film, stars as an aspiring actress who begins a rollercoaster romance with a struggling jazz pianist played by Ryan Gosling. With great chemistry between the leads, six original songs and Chazelle’s energetic appropriation of various movie musical styles, this might not be the film that convinces those who don’t like musicals to finally embrace them, but it’s definitely going to try.
Tampopo (1985) Trailers
An homage to classic film tropes as well as a wholly unique cinema classic itself, Juzo Itami's episodic comedy is a variation on the "spaghetti western"—but only if you replace the spaghetti with ramen noodles and the West with 1980s Japan. You'll definitely want to eat before you watch Tampopo, which follows a ronin (technically, a truck driver) on his quest to aid a noodle shop owner make the perfect bowl of ramen. The result is one of the best food films ever made. This Criterion Collection release features a new 4K remaster and marks the first appearance of the film on DVD or Blu-ray in North America.
