▣ Bumblebee Trailers
This surprisingly decent spin-off of the Transformers series actually has a higher Metascore than any other film in the franchise. Set in 1987, Bumblebee follows Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld) as she discovers the titular Transformer in a junkyard, only to learn that it’s no ordinary VW bug. Travis Knight makes his live-action directing debut after the critical hit Kubo and the Two Strings.
▣ The Mule Trailers
Clint Eastwood steps in front of the camera for the first time since 2012’s Trouble with the Curve in this film based on the life of World War II veteran Leo Sharp. Directing himself for the first time since 2008’s Gran Torino, Eastwood stars as Earl Stone, a man facing foreclosure on his business who unknowingly signs up to be a drug courier for the Mexican cartel. Bradley Cooper plays the DEA agent who takes an interest in Earl. There's a strong supporting cast (including Laurence Fishburne, Michael Peña, Dianne Wiest, Andy Garcia, Alison Eastwood, and Taissa Farmiga), but critics mostly found it unsubstantial and underdeveloped.
▣ A Silent Voice Trailers
Based on Yoshitoki Oima’s best-selling, seven-volume manga series, this winner of Best Film at the Tokyo Anime Awards is an incident-packed coming-of-age drama that tackles bullying and suicide. Directed by Naoko Yamada, the 2017 film (which is only now making its way to disc in the West) tracks the evolving relationship between Shōya Ishida, a school bully, and Shōko Nishimiya, a young girl with a hearing disability.
▣ Vice Trailers
Nominated for eight Academy Awards (and a 2018-leading six Golden Globes) but not as well-liked by critics (who found it too glib and shallow), director Adam McKay’s follow-up to The Big Short explores how Dick Cheney became vice president to George W. Bush and reshaped the country and the world during his eight years in power. Christian Bale stars as Cheney (and he certainly looks convincing after gaining 40 pounds for the role), and he's joined by Amy Adams as Lynne Cheney, Sam Rockwell as George W. Bush, Steve Carell as Donald Rumsfeld, Tyler Perry as Colin Powell, LisaGay Hamilton as Condoleezza Rice, and Lily Rabe and Alison Pill as Liz and Mary Cheney.

▣ Mirai
Trailers
The latest from anime writer-director Mamoru Hosoda (Summer Wars, Wolf Children, The Boy and the Beast) is a fantastical take on a simple story. In order to come to terms with the arrival of his baby sister, a little boy travels through time to meet his relatives at different ages, including his sister as a teenager. John Cho, Rebecca Hall, and Daniel Dae Kim head the English voice cast.
▣ On the Basis of Sex Trailers
Of the two Ruth Bader Ginsburg movies to screen in 2018, this—the fictionalized biopic—is the inferior one. Felicity Jones stars as the future Supreme Court justice in Mimi Leder's drama, which focuses on Ginsburg's early career and, in particular, a landmark gender discrimination case she was a part of. Critics admired the film's intentions, but not its execution.

▣ Glass Trailers
It is becoming increasingly clear that Split was a fluke. While that 2017 film was M. Night Shyamalan's first positively reviewed release in 17 years, this recent sequel—which concludes a trilogy that began with 2000's Unbreakable—finds Shyamalan back in "wobbly," "moralizing," "pedantic,' and "confused" territory, according to critics. Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson, and James McAvoy reprise their roles from the prior film(s), while newcomers include Sarah Paulson.

▣ Bisbee '17
The latest acclaimed documentary from Robert Greene (Actress, Kate Plays Christine) delves into the heart and history of Bisbee, Arizona, an old mining town near the Mexican border. In 1917, 1200 immigrant miners were taken from their homes, forced into cattle cars, shipped to the desert, and left to die. Greene captures the community’s struggle to come to grips with the deportation on its 100th anniversary.
▣ Destroyer Trailers
Karyn Kusama’s follow-up to The Invitation stars a barely recognizable Nicole Kidman as LAPD detective Erin Bell. As a young cop, Bell was placed in an undercover job that ended tragically. When her past reemerges in her present, she must deal with the demons still troubling her. Kidman's performance is certainly the highlight of the film for critics, who found the film's other components somewhat less interesting.

▣ Arctic Trailers
Brazilian director and YouTube star Joe Penna’s debut feature first earned notice at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, where it earned comparisons to All Is Lost thanks to its minimal dialogue and story of survival against brutal elements. Mad Mikkelsen stars as a man stranded in the Arctic after an airplane crash who must decide whether to remain at his makeshift camp and wait for rescue or to trek into the unknown in hopes of making it out alive.
