▣ Little Women
Trailers
Nominated for six Academy Awards including best picture, Greta Gerwig’s second solo directorial effort is yet another terrific adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel, which has now inspired eight feature films to date (including director Gillian Armstrong’s well-received 1994 film). To make it her own, Gerwig uses flashbacks to tell the story of the March sisters—Jo (Saoirse Ronan), Meg (Emma Watson), Amy (Florence Pugh), and Beth (Eliza Scanlen). Timothée Chalamet, who appeared in Gerwig's previous feature, Lady Bird, also stars as neighbor and love-interest Laurie, Laura Dern plays their mom, and Meryl Streep makes a memorable appearance as Aunt March.

▣ Grass
One of a pair of 2018 films from prolific Korean director Hong Sang-soo (it finally arrived in American theaters in 2019 following the other one, Hotel by the River), Grass looks at the comings and goings of patrons of a cafe in Seoul through the eyes of one of its customers, a writer played by frequent Hong collaborator Kim Min-hee. The relatively short film originally debuted at the 2018 Berlinale, where critics gave it generally good reviews, praising the film's humor and playfulness even while warning that, as IndieWire's David Ehrlich put it, "It will be impenetrable for those who are new to [Hong's] work."
▣ Just Mercy Trailers
Before he jumps into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Shang-Chi, Destin Daniel Cretton (Short Term 12, The Glass Castle) delivers another well-meaning drama with this true story of Harvard-educated lawyer and activist Bryan Stevenson (Michael B. Jordan). Brie Larson, the star of his previous two films, takes on a supporting role as a local advocate who supports Stevenson in his years-long defense of Walter McMillian (Jamie Foxx), who was sentenced to death for the murder of an 18-year-old girl despite evidence proving his innocence.

▣ Ip Man 4: The Finale Trailers
Now you can watch all of the Ip Men (Ips Man?) at home. The martial arts franchise from Hong Kong director Wilson Yip is based on the life of the real Ip Man, a Wing Chun master famous for (among other things) being the tutor of Bruce Lee. Donnie Yen returns as the title character, and the story in this concluding chapter follows him from 1964 until his death in 1972.

▣ The Assistant Trailers
The first narrative feature from Casting JonBenét director Kitty Green stars Julia Garner (Ozark) as Jane, an aspiring film producer whose first Hollywood job is as an assistant to a powerful entertainment mogul (who is not named Harvey Weinstein, but may as well be). Capturing a single day in Jane’s life as she works for a faceless, nameless boss, The Assistant accumulates power through Garner’s performance. But, while timely, the film seemed a bit too cautious for a few critics.
