A recipient of 16 Emmy nominations, this 2017 HBO miniseries from TV veteran David E. Kelley (Ally McBeal, The Practice) is an adaptation of Liane Moriarty's book of the same name. Jean-Marc Vallée (Dallas Buyers Club, Wild) directs all seven episodes of this darkly comedic drama about three mothers "whose seemingly perfect lives unravel to the point of murder." The big-name cast features Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley, Alexander Skarsgård, Laura Dern, Adam Scott, and Zoe Kravitz.

The End of the Tour and The Spectacular Now writer-director James Ponsoldt’s adaptation of Dave Eggers’ novel follows Emma Watson’s Mae as she excels at the world’s largest tech company and is encouraged by company founder Eamon Bailey (Tom Hanks) to live her life with complete transparency. Hanks starred in Tom Tykwer’s adaptation of Eggers’ A Hologram for the King last year, but here he plays a more sinister character alongside a strong supporting cast that includes Karen Gillan, John Boyega, Ellar Coltrane, and the late Bill Paxton in one of his last performances.

The latest from writer-director Nacho Vigalondo (Timecrimes, Open Windows) stars Anne Hathaway as a hard-partying woman who discovers a strange connection between herself and a monster destroying Seoul, South Korea. While the pay-off for this intriguing set-up has disappointed some critics, others believe the offbeat sci-fi comedy, also starring Jason Sudeikis, is worth the bumpy ride.

Zach Braff (Wish I Was Here, Garden State) directs Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine and Alan Arkin in this middling remake of the 1979 senior citizen heist comedy (originally starring George Burns, Art Carney, and Lee Strasberg). Having lost their pension, the three friends decide to rob the bank that absconded with their money.

Based on an E.L. Doctorow short story, Wakefield stars Bryan Cranston as Howard Wakefield, a successful attorney who decides to leave his wife (Jennifer Garner) and daughters and hide in his garage attic, where he watches his family cope with his disappearance. Written and directed by Robin Swicord (The Jane Austen Book Club), the film earned mixed-to-decent reviews.

In this so-so adaptation of Herman Koch’s 2009 best-selling novel, writer-director Oren Moverman (Time Out of Mind) moves the action from Holland to the U.S. as a well-known politician (Richard Gere), his brother (Steve Coogan), and their wives (Laura Linney, Rebecca Hall) come to terms with a terrible crime perpetrated by their sons.

Director Guy Ritchie (Sherlock Holmes) puts his spin on the Arthurian legend with this adventure tale focusing on the future King Arthur's origins. The unsurprising result is similar to the bulk of Ritchie's filmography: middling-to-poor reviews. Charlie Hunnam, Djimon Hounsou, and Jude Law star.

Jonathan Levine (The Night Before) directs Goldie Hawn (in her first film role in 15 years) and Amy Schumer as mother and daughter in this R-rated comedic adventure that finds the pair kidnapped on their South American vacation. Critics were pretty clear that it's no Trainwreck, though it may be a trainwreck.

The latest well-reviewed examination of family relationships from Japanese writer-director Hirokazu Kore-eda (Like Father, Like Son, Our Little Sister) reunites part of the cast of his 2008 classic Still Walking to tell the story of a struggling writer (and part-time detective) trying to reconnect with his mother, ex-wife, and son.

This sequel to Prometheus (and the 6th chapter in the 38-year-old Alien franchise) picks up after Dr. Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) and David (Michael Fassbender) have searched the galaxy for the Engineers. A new crew (Katherine Waterston, James Franco, Billy Crudup, Danny McBride, Demián Bichir, Carmen Ejogo, Amy Seimetz, Jussie Smollett, Callie Hernandez, Nathaniel Dean, Alexander England, and Benjamin Rigby) with plans to colonize a distant planet makes a fateful stop at an uncharted paradise only to run into the least friendly aliens in movie history.

Some critics found diminishing returns, but writer-director James Gunn’s sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy had no problem out-grossing the original this summer. With more songs from the 1970s, a slew of one-liners, and plenty of colorful action, Vol. 2 focuses on the relationships between Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) and his father Ego (Kurt Russel), Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and Nebula (Karen Gillan), Rocket Raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper) and Yondu (Michael Rooker) and the difficulties of raising Baby Groot.

Who could have ever guessed that a movie based on a terrible television series would also be terrible? In fact, this buddy comedy from Horrible Bosses director Seth Gordon didn't just bomb with critics; it is also one of the year's biggest box office flops despite the presence of stars Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron.

poster Dean Trailers

Comedian Demetri Martin makes his feature writing-directing debut with this earnest, comedic tale about dealing with loss. Martin stars as the title character, an illustrator struggling with the death of his mother, so he takes off to Los Angeles where he meets Gillian Jacobs‘ Nicky. Back in New York, his father (Kevin Kline) is trying to move on by selling the family home and, in the process, meets a real estate agent played by Mary Steenburgen. Reviews were mixed, but the jury of the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival awarded the film with the Founders Award for Best Narrative Feature.

Rachel Weisz stars in this adaptation of Daphne Du Maurier‘s classic novel about an Englishman (Sam Claflin) who plots the murder of his cousin, only to fall for her charms. Roger Michell (Le Week-End) directs a cast that also includes Iain Glen and Holiday Grainger.
