Director Ari Folman (Waltz with Bashir) mixes live-action and animation in this loose adaptation of Stanislaw Lem’s novel The Futurological Congress; the result is one of the stranger films available on DVD this week. Actress Robin Wright stars as actress “Robin Wright” in a fictional future Hollywood where she signs away the rights to her digital self to Miramount Studios with no restrictions on how they can be used. This lucrative deal allows her to care for her son, played by Kodi Smit-McPhee. With a strong cast that also includes Harvey Keitel, Danny Houston, Jon Hamm, and Paul Giamatti, The Congress earned a mix of raves and lukewarm responses when it premiered at Cannes in 2013.

Matt Reeves takes over directing duties from Rupert Wyatt for this even more successful sequel to the surprise 2011 hit Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Dawn's story picks up 10 years after the virus outbreak as a group of human survivors struggle to form a truce with the apes. Andy Serkis returns as Caesar, and joining the cast are Jason Clarke as a man who favors peace, and Gary Oldman as a man who believes that war is inevitable. (Only one of them is right.) Keri Russell and Kodi Smit-McPhee play Clarke’s wife and son. Reeves has signed on to co-write and direct a third film, scheduled for a July 29, 2016 release, so you'll be seeing more of these damn dirty apes.

Director Lasse Hallström continued his recent string of middling films this summer with this culture-clash restaurant drama. Helen Mirren stars in this adaptation of Richard C. Morais’ best-selling novel about an Indian family opening a restaurant in a small town in the south of France, right across the street from a Michelin-starred restaurant run by Madame Mallory (Mirren). Om Puri and Manish Dayal star as the proprietor father and the talented chef son of Maison Mumbai, while Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey are among the producers.

Writer-director John Michael McDonagh’s follow-up to 2011‘s The Guard is another showcase for actor Brendan Gleeson, here playing Father James, a good priest in a small Irish town. During confession one day, an unknown man tells Father James that he plans to kill him in a week’s time. As he prepares for death and seeks to discover the identity of the man threatening him, his daughter (Kelly Reilly) pays him a visit. Chris O'Dowd, Aidan Gillen, and Dylan Moran play townsfolk (and thus potential suspects) in this dark comedy that earned positive reviews from critics and users alike.

Inspired by the the true story of musician/comedian Chris Sievey and his Frank Sidebottom persona, Frank stars Michael Fassbender as the leader of a band (with an unpronounceable name) working on a new album. Fassbender appears throughout the film covered by a large papier-mâché head (as did Sievey in real life when he was playing Frank). Directed by Lenny Abrahamson (What Richard Did), Frank follows Domhnall Gleeson’s Jon, a wanna-be musician who joins the group at the insistence of their manager (Scoot McNairy) despite lacking any requisite skills. Maggie Gyllenhaal plays the band’s acerbic synth/theremin player. The film earned praise at its Sundance premiere and when it reached theaters during the summer.

The latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a space opera about a rag-tag band of outer-space misfits directed by James Gunn (Slither, Super). It's also 2014's highest-grossing release by a wide margin, and the best-reviewed Marvel film since 2008's Iron Man. Guardians follows Peter Quill/Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) as he teams up with Rocket Raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper), the tree-like Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), and Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista) to battle the evil Ronan (Lee Pace), who covets a mysterious orb. The eclectic cast also includes Glenn Close as Commander Rael, John C. Reilly as Rhomann Dey, Djimon Hounsou as Korath the Pursuer, Michael Rooker as Yondu, Karen Gillan as Nebula, and Benicio del Toro as The Collector. You'll have to wait until 2017 for the sequel.

A new Woody Allen film has landed in theaters every year since 1982 (and he certainly didn’t take too many years off between 1966 and 1981). This year’s offering, though, is not one of his better outings. Moonlight is set in the 1920s and stars Colin Firth as an Englishman brought to the south of France to debunk a spiritualist played by Emma Stone. Marcia Gay Harden, Hamish Linklater, Eileen Atkins, and Jackie Weaver also star.

Wes Ball makes his feature directing debut with this adaptation of James Dashner's best-selling YA novel about a teen amnesiac (Dylan O'Brien) who discovers that he is trapped in a giant maze along with a small group of fellow teens who have formed a rudimentary society. Critics were let down by the ending, but otherwise found the film fairly decent, though it certainly wasn't amazing. (You knew that was coming.)

Writer-director Craig Johnson (True Adolescents) and co-writer Mark Heyman (Black Swan) won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at Sundance in January for this story about estranged siblings Milo (Bill Hader) and Maggie (Kristen Wiig), who reunite when Milo is hospitalized after attempting suicide. It’s not all drama, however, as the film relies on the Saturday Night Live alums’ comedic chemistry and the power of Starship’s “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” to heal the pair’s wounds. Helping in their recovery are Luke Wilson as Maggie’s husband and Ty Burrell as a man from Milo’s romantic past.

A strong cast (Tina Fey, Jason Bateman, Jane Fonda, Rose Byrne, Adam Driver, Connie Britton, Timothy Olyphant) is mostly wasted as Shawn Levy continues his impressive uninterrupted streak of critical failures as a director, this time with a dramedy based on Jonathan Tropper's best-seller about bickering siblings who reunite after the death of their father.

Bill Nighy, Dominic West, Imelda Staunton, and Paddy Considine star in this crowd-pleasing true story of a group of gay and lesbian activists who join forces with striking miners in mid-1980s Britain. The worst that critics could say about the film was that it was a tad "manipulative" and "escapist"; generally, everyone enjoyed it.

poster The Trip to Italy 75 Watch Trailer

Returning for this sequel to The Trip are director Michael Winterbottom and stars Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon. This time, they set off for Italy, where they find more wonderful food, scenery, and opportunities to test each other’s impersonation skills. Yes, Michael Caine was in The Italian Job, so expect a reprise of that popular bit from the original film, as well as Brydon’s Al Pacino (inspired here by The Godfather and their proximity to Sicily), plus visits to Pompeii and the homes of the Romantic poets. While the structure follows the original Trip, the interpersonal dynamics have shifted between the leads as Brydon gets a bit of wanderlust, and Coogan struggles with being a distant father to his teenage son.

Denzel Washington stars in a loose adaptation of the 1980s TV series that reunites him with his Training Day director, Antoine Fuqua. Washington’s version of Robert McCall (played in the original series by Edward Woodward) is a former black ops agent who faked his death but comes out of retirement to help a girl played by Chloë Grace Moretz. She’s involved with the Russian mob, so McCall introduces himself. The script is by Richard Wenk (The Mechanic), and the supporting cast includes Melissa Leo, Martin Csokas, and Bill Pullman. Critics liked Washington much more than they liked the film.

The first film of what Kevin Smith is calling his True North Trilogy (which will eventually include Yoga Hosers and Moose Jaws—yes, that's Jaws with a moose rather than a shark) stars Justin Long as Wallace, a podcaster enslaved and experimented on by an old sailor played by Smith’s Red State star Michael Parks. Genesis Rodriguez and Haley Joel Osment play Wallace’s girlfriend and pal, who come looking for him.
