▣ A Bread Factory Part 1: For the Sake of Gold
▣ A Bread Factory Part 2: Walk With Me a While Trailers
Available as a combined two-film set, these under-the-radar 2018 releases from economist-turned-director Patrick Wang (In the Family) captivated those critics who saw them. Spanning four hours in all, the two episodic and often comedic films follow a large cast of characters (with an ensemble led by a terrific Tyne Daly) involved with a small-town community arts center. Variety's Owen Gleiberman called the result "as if Eric Rohmer had made a Christopher Guest film."

▣ An Elephant Sitting Still
Trailers
Certain to appear on numerous year-end top 10 lists next month, Hu Bo’s first and last feature (the celebrated 29-year-old novelist turned filmmaker killed himself shortly after his film was completed) is an adaptation of a story from his 2017 novel Huge Crack. The nearly four-hour film follows multiple characters in a small town in northern China as their desperate lives intersect. Screen Daily's Sarah Ward writes of the award-winning film, “Hu paints a picture of existential malaise with such a fine-tuned control of mood, imagery and pacing that the end result resembles a marriage of Jia Zhangke and Bela Tarr.”
▣ Hustlers Trailers
Jennifer Lopez is joined by Crazy Rich Asians star Constance Wu, Keke Palmer, Julia Stiles, Lili Reinhardt, and rappers Lizzo and Cardi B in this surprisingly well-reviewed true-crime tale set after the 2007-08 Wall Street financial crisis. Based on Jessica Pressler’s 2015 New York Magazine article and directed by Lorene Scafaria (writer-director of the well-received The Meddler), the film follows its eclectic cast as they play a group of shrewd, business-minded strippers who target their Wall Street clients’ pocketbooks.
▣ IT: Chapter Two Trailers
The Losers Club are all grown up in this sequel to the $700 million worldwide grossing It. Once again, Andy Muschietti directs and Bill Skarsgård returns as Pennywise. But we return to Derry, Maine 27 years later, so the kids are now played by James McAvoy (Bill), Jessica Chastain (Beverly), Bill Hader (Richie), Isaiah Mustafa (Mike), Jay Ryan (Ben), James Ransone (Eddie), and Andy Bean (Stanley). Chapter Two is definitely inferior to the first film and is hampered by (among other things) a nearly three-hour running time.
▣ Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice Trailers
This Tribeca-screened music documentary chronicles the entire career of Linda Ronstadt, from her early days with folk trio the Stone Poneys in the mid-'60s up through her retirement eight years ago—passing through a variety of genres (and activist work for multiple causes) along the way. There are some talking heads, but much of the story is told via Ronstadt's own narration, though most of it comes from older interviews.
▣ Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood
Trailers

An absolute lock for a best picture nomination—and one of a few films with a chance at actually winning the Oscar—Quentin Tarantino’s ninth film (if you count Kill Bill as one) began collecting excellent reviews at the Cannes Film Festival in May. Taking place over three days in 1969 Los Angeles, the film follows Leonardo DiCaprio as aging TV star Rick Dalton, Brad Pitt as Cliff Booth, Rick’s longtime stunt double, and Margot Robbie as actress Sharon Tate. While the story also involves members of the Manson Family, the film deviates from actual events, as was the case for Tarantino's WWII epic Inglourious Basterds. The Blu-ray release adds 20 minutes of deleted scenes.
▣ Until the End of the World (1991) Trailers
Boasting perhaps the best soundtrack in film history and memorable imagery, Wim Wenders' globetrotting 1991 sci-fi epic has long been one of cinema's most elusive films (perhaps fittingly so for a film that deals with dreams). Its original (and brief) American theatrical release—met with surprisingly unenthusiastic reviews at the time, though the film has since grown in stature—clocked in at around two and a half hours. The European release added about 20 minutes, but Wenders had always intended the film to be much longer, and the filmmaker occasionally brought his own personal five-hour cut to one-off screenings around the world in the ensuing years. But, to the frustration of cinephiles, no version of the film ever made its way to home video in North America aside from the odd cable TV showing—until now. This Criterion Collection release features a new 4K restoration of the film, which now clocks in at 287 minutes, and adds multiple extras including a new conversation between Wenders and David Byrne.

▣ Ad Astra Trailers
After originally being cast by James Gray in The Lost City of Z (and eventually replaced by Charlie Hunnam due to a scheduling conflict), Brad Pitt finds himself in space instead of the jungle in the director’s latest. Ad Astra (“To the Stars” in Latin) finds Pitt’s Roy McBride tasked with traveling to the outer edges of the solar system to find his father (Tommy Lee Jones), who might hold the key to a mystery that threatens the planet. Gray has compared the story to Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness. It might not be quite as good as another film inspired by that text, but reviewers certainly seemed to like it when it screened at festivals and in theaters in September.
▣ Downton Abbey Trailers
After six seasons on TV, Downton Abbey jumped to the big screen this fall to catch up with the Crawley family and their staff as they prepare for the arrival of the King and Queen of England. TV veteran Michael Engler directs from a script by series creator Julian Fellowes, and 20 original cast members return. Joining the story are Imelda Staunton as Lady Bagshaw, Simon Jones as King George V, and Geraldine James as Queen Mary.
▣ Long Day's Journey Into Night
Trailers
The second film from Chinese director Bi Gan (Kaili Blues) first debuted at Cannes in 2018, where critics were mesmerized by a noir-like mystery that emphasizes atmosphere and technical mastery over story. Of particular note is a nearly one-hour, dream-like, single-take 3D sequence that closes the film and marks Journey as an unforgettable experience.

▣ Judy Trailers
Renée Zellweger appears to be headed for an Oscar nomination for her mostly well-received performance as Judy Garland in this otherwise lackluster biopic by director Rupert Goold (2015’s True Story), working from a screenplay by Tom Edge (adapting Peter Quilter’s stage play End of the Rainbow). The film devotes most of its running time to Garland’s final weeks, including her five-week, sold-out run in London in the winter of 1968 and her late-in-life romance with Mickey Deans (Finn Wittrock). It was a rough time in Garland’s life, and Liza Minnelli, her daughter, has come out against the film.
▣ The Kill Team Trailers
Dan Krauss adapts his own Tribeca-winning 2013 documentary about a 21-year-old American soldier (Nat Wolff) who faces a moral dilemma while serving in Afghanistan, where, when confronted by potential war atrocities, he must decide whether to sacrifice his ambitions, friendships, and—potentially—his own life to do the right thing.
