▣ Joker Trailers
The surprise winner of the top prize at this year's Venice Film Festival, Todd Phillips’ controversial comic book film has provoked quite a wide range of responses from critics and moviegoers, and could easily pick up one or more Oscar nominations, depending on how much Academy members like it. One thing that's unequivocal is Joker's financial success: It's the highest-grossing R-rated film in history with more than $1 billion in global receipts. Heavily influenced by Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver and King of Comedy, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck, a clown for hire with ambitions to become a standup comedian. But life doesn’t work out as planned for Arthur, as the cruelty of Gotham City leads him down a different path.
▣ The Lighthouse
Trailers
Robert Eggers’ equally acclaimed follow-up to 2016’s The Witch chronicles the downward spiral of two lighthouse keepers played by Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson in unanimously praised performances. Set on a remote New England island in the 1890s (but filmed in Nova Scotia in 2018) and shot in 35mm black and white in the boxy 1.19 to 1 aspect ratio, the film traps viewers in a creepy tale of madness full of bravura filmmaking and performances that could earn awards consideration despite the extremely unique material that will leave some wondering what they just experienced.

▣ Jay and Silent Bob Reboot Trailers
A somewhat under-the-radar return for Kevin Smith—it was released via a roadshow-style tour this fall—Reboot returns its title characters to the screen for the first time in 13 years. Framed as a very meta sequel/reboot to 2001's Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back, Reboot finds the pair discovering that the first movie based on their likenesses is being remade by director Kevin Smith (yes, the one you're thinking of). It's another cameo-filled affair, but critics found a bit less to like this time around.
▣ Pain and Glory
Trailers
The latest from beloved filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar is a career highlight as he pulls from his own life to tell the story of Salvador Mallo (Antonio Banderas), a film director struggling physically and looking back on his life—his childhood, his first love, his first heartbreak, and his discovery of cinema. Banderas won best actor honors at the Cannes Film Festival and has been picking up additional honors over the past month, while Spain has selected the well-reviewed film to compete for a nomination in the newly renamed Best International Feature Film category at the Oscars.
▣ Zombieland: Double Tap Trailers
Since Zombieland, his well-received debut feature, director Ruben Fleischer has failed to earn another positive Metascore, with each subsequent film (30 Minutes or Less, Gangster Squad, Venom) receiving increasingly poor reviews. This sequel didn't quite get him back on track, but it may be a step in the right direction. Original writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (the duo behind the Deadpool movies) return, as does the original cast (Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, Jesse Eisenberg, Abigail Breslin, and possibly Bill Murray). They are joined by Rosario Dawson, Zoey Deutch, Luke Wilson, Thomas Middleditch, and Dan Aykroyd in a story that finds Breslin’s Little Rock taking off on her own as the others chase after her.

▣ Harriet Trailers
The latest from director Kasi Lemmons (Eve's Bayou, Talk to Me) is a biopic about famed abolitionist Harriet Tubman starring Cynthia Erivo (Widows) in the title role. Her performance earned plenty of praise when the film premiered at TIFF in September, but overall, critics were more mixed on the film’s ability to balance its action elements with the human being involved in the liberation of hundreds of slaves. So, while Harriet has faded from the best picture race, Erivo is possibly still in contention for best actress.
▣ Motherless Brooklyn Trailers
Edward Norton writes, directs, and stars in this major reworking of Jonathan Lethem’s 1999 novel. Moving the story from the 1990s to the ‘50s and layering on a new, resonant to our times conspiracy, Norton stars as Lionel Essrog, a private investigator with Tourette’s syndrome whose attempt to solve the murder of his mentor (Bruce Willis) leads him to the most powerful man in New York City. Critics split on Norton’s ability to pull off his passion project, but his ambition makes it an enticing option despite its nearly two-and-a-half-hour length.
▣ Parasite
Trailers
It’s rare when critics love the Cannes jury’s choice for the Palme d’Or, but this year, they rejoiced when the latest from Bong Joon-ho (Okja, Snowpiercer, The Host) took home the prize. And Parasite has continued to make waves since that festival debut, eventually becoming the best-reviewed film of 2019 en route to global box office success and plenty of Oscar buzz. The story concerns the street-smart Kim family as they worm their way into the lives of the affluent Park family when the Kim children become a tutor and art therapist for the Park’s kids. Twists and turns follow, but you'll want to know as little as possible before watching the funny and savage film.
▣ Terminator: Dark Fate Trailers
It's far from the worst Terminator film. (2009's Salvation scored lower, and the less said about 2015's Genisys, the better.) Instead, it may be the most ... inconsequential? Directed by Tim Miller (Deadpool) and returning stars Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton (who are joined by new-to-the-franchise Mackenzie Davis, Natalia Reyes, and Gabriel Luna), Dark Fate made little impression upon its release in October, and reportedly lost over $100 million. Perhaps this time he won't be back.
