▣ Okko's Inn Trailers
GKIDS' latest Japanese anime import comes from Studio Ghibli veteran Kitaro Kosaka, who now works at another famed animation studio, Madhouse. Okko's Inn is based on a series of Japanese children's novels (previously adapted into a TV series) and centers on an orphaned girl who moves into her grandmother's rural inn, which she quickly discovers is inhabited by friendly ghosts who help her learn how to become a welcoming host. The home video release contains both the original Japanese version (with subtitles) as well as the new English-language dub released in theaters in April.

▣ 3 Faces Trailers
Since being banned from filmmaking in 2010 and barred from leaving Iran, Jafar Panahi has produced three highly regarded works—This Is Not a Film, Closed Curtain, and Taxi. In his fourth film under his 20-year ban, Panahi, playing a version of himself, is joined by actress Behnaz Jafari as they travel to a mountain village to solve the mystery of a video Jafari received from a troubled young girl. In his review from the 2018 Cannes Film Festival (where the film won Best Screenplay), Justin Chang of the L.A. Times found “its insights casually profound.”
▣ High Life Trailers
Noted French director Claire Denis has dabbled in genre before (such as with the divisive 2001 horror title Trouble Every Day), but High Life is her first science fiction film—and her first English-language feature. As an example of the former, it's also rather unusual: Rarely are sci-fi films this meditative, amorphous, sorrowful, and sexually graphic. (As you may have heard, there's a portion of the spaceship named "The Fuckbox.") The recipient of very good reviews at TIFF last fall, High Life stars Robert Pattinson, Juliette Binoche, Mia Goth, and André Benjamin (aka Andre 3000) as death-row convicts enlisted for a mission into deep space—allegedly to investigate using a black hole as an energy source, but in fact a mission to conduct sexual and other horrific experiments on the passengers, who quickly discover that they are also on a one-way voyage. Don't expect a clear, linear narrative, but do expect a "visceral" and "difficult" experience that ranks among the filmmaker's best work—accompanied, once again, by another new Tindersticks score.
▣ Pet Sematary Trailers
Mary Lambert's 1989 adaptation of Stephen King's Pet Sematary—perhaps the writer's scariest novel—has a few fans, but not many of them are film critics: The film received mostly poor reviews upon its original release (despite a screenplay by King himself). So it's no surprise that the material is received a do-over, but it is slightly shocking that the remake is so decent, even if the original glowing reviews out of its SXSW premiere didn't quite hold up upon its general release. The new film comes from the directing team of Dennis Widmyer and Kevin Kolsch (Starry Eyes) and stars Jason Clarke as Louis Creed, a doctor who moves his wife Rachel (Amy Seimetz) and their two young children from Boston to rural Maine. In the woods near the family home, Louis discovers a mysterious burial ground, and when tragedy leads to horror, he turns to his neighbor, Jud Crandall (John Lithgow), for an explanation. Some changes were made to King's story, so even longtime fans won't know exactly how this turns out.

▣ Ash Is Purest White
Trailers
Writer-director Jia Zhangke (Mountains May Depart, A Touch of Sin) continues his examination of 21st century China with this epic tale of love between a gangster (Liao Fan of Black Coal, Thin Ice) and his girl (Jia’s wife and muse Zhao Tao), who comes looking for him after spending five years in prison for protecting him. It’s another stunning performance by one of China’s best actresses.
▣ Dogman Trailers
Italian director Matteo Garrone (Tale of Tales) returns to the mob world of his international breakout, the Grand Prix-winning Gomorrah, with this tale of a dog groomer entwined in a dangerous relationship with a violent, former boxer. The cast is led by Marcello Fonte, whose performance earned him an award at Cannes last year. Inspired by a true story, Dogman as a whole also picked up solid reviews at the festival, though critics were divided on the director's stylistic choices. Some reviewers found the film violent but "thrilling" and "beautifully shot," while others found that the film lacked both subtlety and "emotional reality."
▣ Fast Color Trailers
Like her first feature, Miss Stevens, Julia Hart’s latest was co-written with her husband, producer Jordan Horowitz. Otherwise, it’s quite different. Set in a drought-ridden world and focusing on a family of black women with special abilities, the film follows Ruth (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), her mother (Lorraine Toussaint), and her daughter. According to Indiewire’s Eric Kohn, this superhero movie “has a solemn, hypnotic quality, hovering between the profound ramifications of its intimate story and the hints of an otherworldly drama.” But Variety's Amy Nicholson warns that Color never quite solidifies into an effective film.
▣ Little Woods Trailers
Set in fracking country in North Dakota, Nia DaCosta's debut film is a modern-day, female-led western centering on two estranged sisters who reunite when their mother dies. One (Lily James) is dealing with an unexpected pregnancy, and the other (Tessa Thompson) is on the verge of leaving their small town and going legit after paying the bills by running prescription drugs over the Canadian border. But with the mortgage on their mother's house due, she faces a choice between family and escape. Little Woods received good reviews at its Tribeca debut a year ago—with critics especially praising both leads—and it finally reached theaters this spring.
▣ Relaxer Trailers
The latest from Joel Potrykus (Buzzard, The Alchemist Cookbook) takes place in a single living room, where Abbie (Joshua Burge) attempts the latest challenge from his older brother: stay on the couch until he gets past level 256 on Pac-Man, breaking Billy Mitchell’s record. Like Potrykus’ previous films, it’s challenging and funny. In his review for Indiewire, Eric Kohn writes, “It’s a grotesque downward spiral, both hilarious and mesmerizing, but above all elevated by its insights into the depraved final gasp of the analog age.”
▣ Shazam! Trailers
Before its release, this spring superhero feature seemed to have several factors working against it. One is that it's a movie titled Shaza[a]m, while by now most of us know that no such thing exists. Secondly, it's a film in the DC Extended Universe, and unless those are titled Wonder Woman, they aren't all that good. But Shazam! pulled off a bit of a magic trick, making enough of an impression with critics and moviegoers to trigger production of a sequel. The lighthearted film follows Billy Batson (Asher Angel) as he’s granted superpowers by an ancient wizard (Djimon Hounsou) and with one word—Shazam!—can turn himself into an adult superhero (a perfectly cast Zachary Levi). Aided by his friend Freddy Freeman (Jack Dylan Grazer), Billy must learn about his powers and face off against Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong).

▣ Alita: Battle Angel Trailers
After almost a decade in development, James Cameron’s adaptation of the popular Battle Angel Alita manga series was finally handed off to Robert Rodriguez (Machete) to direct. (Cameron’s a little busy with his Avatar sequels.) Set far in the future, the story centers on Alita (Rosa Salazar), a cyborg found in the scrapyard of Iron City by Dr. Ido (Christoph Waltz). With no memory or recognition of the world, Alita must learn to navigate the dangerous Iron City, find the truth behind her origin, and discover her unique fighting skills. It’s another jump into the future of visual effects from a director who brought a unique look to the adaptation of Sin City more than a decade ago, though critics found the snazzy visuals weren't enough to overcome a deeply flawed screenplay.
▣ Hail Satan? Trailers
The latest acclaimed documentary from Penny Lane (Nuts!, Our Nixon) examines the five-year rise of the Satanic Temple activist group. The film certainly has fun with the subject matter, as will viewers, according to critics, who enjoyed the film at its Sundance premiere early this year. But Lane—like the subjects of her documentary, who aren't actually devil worshippers—also highlights very serious issues relating to religious liberty and political hypocrisy in present-day America.
▣ Hellboy Trailers
After two successful feature films directed by Guillermo del Toro (2004's Hellboy and its 2008 sequel The Golden Army), Mike Mignola's comic book superhero returned to the big screen in April. But this Hellboy (despite initial plans) was not another sequel; instead, it's a reboot, made without the involvement of del Toro or original star Ron Perlman (who has been replaced by Stranger Things' David Harbour), though Mignola claimed that the new film is more faithful to his original comics. The Descent director Neil Marshall takes over behind the camera, and his film is one of 2019's biggest commercial and critical disappointments. Note that if you are somehow still curious about seeing the film, there's no need to buy the disc: It'll also stream for free (for members) on Amazon's Prime Video beginning today. (And, no, that's not a normal rollout strategy.)
▣ Missing Link Trailers
The latest release from the stop-motion animators at Laika (Kubo and the Two Strings, The Boxtrolls, Coraline) tells the story of Mr. Link, a well-spoken, fur-covered creature (voiced by Zach Galifianakis) who stands 8 feet tall and weighs 630 lbs. Hoping to find his family, Mr. Link enlists the famous, fearless explorer Sir Lionel Frost (Hugh Jackman) and adventurer Adelina Fortnight (Zoe Saldana) in a journey that takes them to the far reaches of the world.

▣ The Hot Zone Miniseries
Julianna Margulies heads the cast of this six-part fictionalized adaptation of Richard Preston's best-selling 1995 nonfiction book chronicling the first Ebola outbreak in 1989 and a U.S. Army scientist's heroic quest to prevent the disease from spreading uncontrollably. Noah Emmerich, Topher Grace, James D'Arcy, Grace Gummer, and Robert Sean Leonard also star.
▣ Long Shot Trailers
This Notting Hill-meets-Dave political rom-com comes from 50/50 director Jonathan Levine. Seth Rogen plays an investigative reporter hired as a speechwriter for his one-time babysitter, now the Secretary of State (Charlize Theron), as she considers a presidential campaign. The comedian-heavy supporting cast includes Bob Odenkirk, June Diane Raphael, Paul Scheer, Randall Park, and Kurt Braunohler, plus Andy Serkis, O'Shea Jackson Jr., and Alexander Skarsgård. The film received plenty of positive reviews, though the miscasting of one (or both) leads hampers the film's believability.
