▣ Sorry We Missed You
Trailers
After winning the Palme d’Or in 2016 for I, Daniel Blake, the now 83-year-old director Ken Loach has produced another social-realist drama that critics like even better. Once again collaborating with screenwriter Paul Laverty (Jimmy's Hall, The Angels' Share, Looking for Eric, The Wind that Shakes the Barley), Loach immerses viewers in the lives of the struggling Turner family. After losing their house in the 2008 financial crisis, they are desperate to improve their financial situation, but Ricky’s new job as a delivery driver proves more difficult than anticipated, and the stress builds for his wife Abby and their two teenage children. It’s an honest, intimate and wrenching look at the dark side of the gig economy.
▣ The Wild Goose Lake Trailers
Writer-director Yinan Diao’s Black Coal, Thin Ice won the Golden Bear at the 2014 Berlin Film Festival. This follow-up premiered five years later at last year’s Cannes Film Festival to even better reviews and set box office records in China upon its release. Diao’s neon-soaked noir follows a gang leader with a bounty on his head as he gets entangled with a mysterious woman while hiding out in Wuhan (yes, the one you're thinking of). After receiving an interrupted theatrical release in March, the film heads to disc today.

▣ Bacurau
Trailers
The latest from Neighboring Sounds and Aquarius director Kleber Mendonça Filho captures the systematic destruction of the fictional Brazilian town of the title, and the fight its citizens put up for their survival. Sharing directorial credit with Juliano Dornelles, the production designer on his previous features, Mendonça Filho has created a visually stunning, genre-bending thriller with plenty of political subtext.

▣ Marriage Story
Trailers
One of the best films of 2019 and the recipient of six Oscar nominations including best picture, the latest from writer-director Noah Baumbach is the (current) culmination of an extremely strong career that has recently featured The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected), Mistress America, While We're Young, and Frances Ha. Pulling from his personal history (not unlike his earlier excavation of his parents’ divorce The Squid and the Whale), the story’s simple premise belies its surprising impact. Charlie (Adam Driver), a theater director, wants to stay in New York. Nicole (Scarlett Johansson), an actress, gets a coveted role in Los Angeles. This change, an eight-year-old son in the middle, and lawyers are all their tenuous relationship needs to begin its ending. This Criterion Collection release of the former Netflix exclusive includes new interviews with the cast, composer Randy Newman, and director plus a making-of feature.
Well Groomed Trailers
It may sound like the setup for a Christopher Guest mockumentary, but Rebecca Stern's HBO documentary spends a year inside the very real (and very colorful) world of competitive creative dog grooming.
▣ The Whistlers Trailers
The latest from Corneliu Porumboiu is a slight change of pace for the director of 12:08 East of Bucharest, Police, Adjective, and The Treasure. This noir-tinged and comedic thriller takes place on the Canary Islands where a corrupt police officer must learn a secret mafia whistling language to help get a mobster out of jail. Twists and dead bodies pile up and a femme fatale named Gilda (Catrinel Marlon) enters the picture as various parties fight to get their hands on 30 million euros.
▣ You Don't Nomi Trailers
Do you love—or love to hate—Paul Verhoeven's notorious 1995 flop Showgirls? Jeffrey McHale's new documentary traces that erotic thriller's elevation to cult classic staus in recent years and examines its ongoing influence on pop culture.

▣ Light from Light Trailers
Something, Anything director Paul Harrill’s second feature is another small, spiritual drama, but this time he uses a haunted Tennessee farmhouse to explore his themes. The story revolves around the relationship of Shelia (Marin Ireland), a paranormal investigator and single mom, who comes to the aid of Richard (Jim Gaffigan), a widower who believes his wife may be haunting his farmhouse. Her investigation ultimately involves her son, Owen (Josh Wiggins) and his classmate Lucy (Atheena Frizzell). Excellent early reviews and a soundtrack by The War on Drugs’ Adam Granduciel and Jon Natchez make this an independent feature worth seeking out.
