Writer-director Corey Finley's impressive debut feature is a dark dramedy starring Olivia Cooke (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl) as Amanda and Anya Taylor-Joy (Split) as Lily, two childhood friends who, after drifting apart, bond over the prospect of killing Lily’s stepdad (Paul Sparks). Their plan leads them to hire a local hustler (Anton Yelchin) to help in the matter.

poster A Wrinkle in Time Trailers

Blu-ray and DVD

Madeline L’Engle‘s 1963 sci-fi children's novel A Wrinkle in Time is beloved by readers but so unfilmable that it had never been adapted for the big screen until Ava DuVernay's (Selma) attempt earlier this year. The result may be better than the 2003 Canadian television adaptation, but not by much—though DuVernay's film does, at least, feature some nice visuals. With a screenplay by Jennifer Lee (Frozen), the Disney film attempts to transport audiences across dimensions of time and space as one girl’s journey to find her father is guided by three celestial beings (Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, and Mindy Kaling). Storm Reid stars as Meg, and Chris Pine is her scientist farther. Gugu Mbatha-Raw, André Holland, and Zach Galifianakis have supporting roles.

In this surprising spring hit, 17-year-old Simon Spier (Nick Robinson) is struggling to tell his family that’s he’s gay while attempting to uncover the identity of the classmate he’s fallen in love with online. Adapted from Becky Albertalli’s novel Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda and directed by TV producer/filmmaker Greg Berlanti, the film also stars Katherine Langford, Alexandra Shipp, Logan Miller, Jennifer Garner, and Josh Duhamel.

After winning Best Screenplay for Leviathan in 2014, writer-director Andrei Zvyagintsev returned to the Cannes competition last May and won the Jury Prize for this story that draws parallels between a divorcing couple’s neglect for their 12-year-old child and the corruption infecting Russia. It also picked up an Oscar nomination in the foreign-language category after somewhat surprisingly being submitted by Russia despite what The N.Y. Times’s Manohla Dargis describes as a “vision of breathtaking, casual cruelty that inexorably shifts from the personal into an indictment of a soul-sick country.”

Alicia Vikander stars as Lara Croft in this reboot of a film franchise (formerly starring Angelina Jolie) based on the video game series that began in 1996, and the latest in a long (and unbroken) line of lousy films based on games. This Tomb Raider finds a 21-year-old Lara trying to solve the mystery of her father’s death, leading her to a tomb on a mythical island off the coast of Japan. Directed by Roar Uthaug (The Wave), the film features supporting performances by Walton Goggins, Dominic West, Daniel Wu, Kristin Scott Thomas, and Hannah John-Kamen.

poster The Death of Stalin Metacritic Must-See Trailers

The latest feature from writer-director Armando Iannucci (In the Loop, Veep, The Thick of It) is a comedic look at the political landscape of 1950s Russia. In the aftermath of Joseph Stalin’s death, different factions fight to control the future of the country, but the main goal is to stay alive. Based on the French graphic novel by Fabien Nury and Thierry Robin, the well-reviewed film stars Steve Buscemi, Andrea Riseborough, Olga Kurylenko, Paddy Considine, Simon Russell Beale, Rupert Friend, Jason Isaacs, Michael Palin, and Jeffrey Tambor—and, no, they're not speaking Russian.

The latest from François Ozon divided critics at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, and it earned a bit of extra press for its explicit first image and cut. Coming off the period melodrama of Frantz, Ozon has crafted an erotic thriller (more in the mode of Swimming Pool) about a young woman (Marine Vacth of Ozon’s Young & Beautiful) who falls in love with her psychoanalyst, who happens to have a twin brother who is also a therapist.

John Boyega stars as Jake Pentecost, the son of Idris Elba’s Stacker Pentecost, in this sequel to Pacific Rim. Steven S. DeKnight (Marvel’s Daredevil) takes over directing duties from Guillermo del Toro to tell the story of the next battle between Jaeger and Kaiju. Recruited back to the team his father once commanded, Jake joins Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi), Lambert (Scott Eastwood), and Amara (Cailee Spaeny) to save the world once again. Naturally, it's not as good as the first film (which itself wasn't exactly a classic).

poster Unsane Trailers

Shot entirely on an iPhone, Steven Soderbergh’s latest experiment in filmmaking is a thriller starring Claire Foy (The Crown) as a woman who, in trying to flee a stalker, gets involuntarily committed to a mental institution. Critics somewhat liked the film as a simple but effective B-movie that is elevated a bit by Foy's performance but let down a touch by its script.

Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson’s follow-up to Spring follows two brothers (played by the directors) as they return to the cult they left a decade earlier. Hoping to find closure, they are instead confronted with mysterious events as they try to get to the truth behind the cult’s beliefs. The film intersects with their first feature, Resolution, and like that film, it has excellent reviews.

Cold Weather writer-director Aaron Katz returns to solo directing (after working with Martha Stephens on Land Ho!) with this Hollywood-set mystery surrounding the relationship of a star (Zoë Kravitz) and her assistant (Lola Kirke). With excellent early reviews from its premiere at SXSW last year, this neo-noir has suspense, humor and compelling performances by its cast, including John Cho as a detective.
