Want proof that comedy is hard? Look no further than this recent Robert De Niro vehicle, in which he stars as an aging insult comedian attempting to revive his flagging career. The latest from director Taylor Hackford (Ray) boasts a strong supporting cast (including Leslie Mann, Edie Falco, Charles Grodin, Cloris Leachman, Harvey Keitel, and Danny DeVito), but they can't save a sub-par script (credited to four different screenwriters), according to reviewers.

Syriana director Stephen Gaghan’s latest film stars Matthew McConaughey as a failing businessman who teams up with a geologist (Edgar Ramirez) to search for gold in the jungles of Borneo. Bryce Dallas Howard also stars. Critics found the resulting adventure clichéd and lackluster, though McConaughey's lauded performance provides a bit of an incentive to watch the film at home.

Director Raoul Peck’s (Lumumba) documentary uses James Baldwin’s words to examine race in America and the assassinations of Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King, Jr. The result is one of last year's highest-scoring films, which received an Oscar nomination for best documentary.

A wordless, animated fable about a man marooned on an island, this stellar debut feature from director Michael Dudok de Wit (and the first international co-production from Japan's Studio Ghibli) won a Special Jury Prize in the Un Certain Regard section at last year’s Cannes Film Festival and an Academy Award nomination for best animated feature.

poster Right Now, Wrong Then Trailers

The latest from Korean director Hong Sang-soo is another tale of a man, a woman, and their awkward meeting. The man here is a film director (as is common in Hong’s films), while the woman is a young artist. He tries to pick her up. So far, so Hong, but halfway through, the film starts over, and we see their meeting again, played out with small variations in dialogue and approach, resulting in a surprisingly complex reflection on human interaction

The latest from acclaimed writer-director Asghar Farhadi (A Separation, The Past) earned a pair of awards at Cannes in 2016 before winning this year's best foreign-language film Oscar. Critics haven't had quite as much praise for the film as Farhadi’s previous work, but it has good reviews nevertheless. The story follows Emad (Shahab Hosseini) and Rana (Taraneh Alidoosti), a young couple living in Tehran, as they are forced to move into a new apartment where an incident linked to the previous tenant of their new home changes the couple’s life.

poster Fifty Shades Darker Trailers

Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan are back as Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey in the first of multiple sequels to Fifty Shades of Grey. James Foley (Glengarry Glen Ross, Perfect Stranger) takes over as director, while Kim Basinger, Tyler Hoechlin, Bella Heathcote, and Hugh Dancy join the cast. A few critics tolerated it, and a few more found it laughable (not in a good way)—but the vast majority dismissed it as dumb and dull.

poster Things to Come Trailers

Isabelle Huppert delivered knockout performances in two great French-language films in 2016. While Elle got more attention (thanks to its controversial subject matter), this more subtle drama was equally as good. The latest from writer-director Mia Hansen-Løve (Goodbye First Love, Eden), Things to Come stars Huppert as Nathalie, a hardworking philosophy teacher with a family and ailing mother who finds a surprising freedom when she discovers that her husband of 25 years is leaving her.

This two-part drama from writer-director So Yong Kim (In Between Days) examines the friendship between two women (Riley Keough, Jena Malone) that momentarily turns into something more. Critics praised the career-best performances of both leads.

This uninspiring teen sci-fi romance from an uninspiring director stars Asa Butterfield as Gardner Elliot, the first human born on Mars. He reaches the age of 16 having only met 14 people on his home planet, and he wonders who his father is and what Earth is like. He begins to get some answers when he strikes up an online friendship with Tulsa (Britt Robertson), but when he finally gets a chance to go to Earth, scientists discover that his body can’t survive in Earth’s atmosphere, so Gardner and Tulsa race against time to unravel the mysteries of his existence.

After sitting out 2005’s xXx: State of the Union, Vin Diesel returns for this second sequel to 2002's absurd spy action movie xXx. Samuel L. Jackson’s Agent Augustus Eugene Gibbons makes his third xXx appearance while D.J. Caruso (I Am Number Four) takes over as director from Rob Cohen and Lee Tamahori. Quality-wise, the result falls somewhere in between the previous two films.

poster Get Out Trailers

Blu-ray and DVD Buy From Amazon

One of this year's most pleasant surprises so far, Get Out finds Key & Peele's Jordan Peele jumping into the horror genre as writer and director of this story of interracial couple Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) and Rose (Allison Williams), whose weekend getaway with Rose’s parents (Catherine Keener and Bradley Whitford) turns deadly. Also starring Caleb Landry Jones and Keith Stanfield, the film scored big with critics and moviegoers thanks to its potent blend of social satire and scares.

poster The Great Wall Trailers

Director Zhang Yimou's (House of Flying Daggers, Hero) first English-language feature is a historical epic/monster movie mash-up—as well as a Great Wall-sized box office bomb—that follows battalions of soldiers as they fight a mysterious species of beast attempting to breach China’s Great Wall. A controversially cast Matt Damon stars alongside Pedro Pascal, Willem Dafoe, Andy Lau, Jing Tian and Eddie Peng.

poster Logan Trailers

While 2013’s The Wolverine was an improvement over the abysmal X-Men Origins: Wolverine, director James Mangold’s second (and final) swipe at the adamantium-clawed superhero is easily the best Wolverine film to date, according to critics. The film finds Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine caring for Patrick Stewart’s ailing Charles Xavier when a young mutant (Dafne Keen) arrives, followed by villains played by Boyd Holbrook and Richard E. Grant. Stephen Merchant also stars as the mutant Caliban.

poster My Life as a Zucchini Trailers

One of the five nominees for best animated feature at this year’s Academy Awards, this French-Swiss production tells the story of Zucchini, who, after the sudden death of his mother, struggles to find his place amongst the other orphans at his new foster home. Adapted by Céline Sciamma (Girlhood) from Gilles Paris’ novel and directed by Claude Barras, this stop-motion tale offers a sensitive look at childhood. The home video release features both the English-language vocal cast (led by Will Forte, Nick Offerman, Ellen Page, and Amy Sedaris) as well as the original French-language version.

poster Before I Fall Trailers

Think of it as a teenage Groundhog Day (or a less violent Edge of Tomorrow). In Ry Russo-Young’s (Nobody Walks) adaptation of Lauren Oliver’s best-selling young-adult novel, Zoey Deutch stars as a high school senior who finds herself re-living the same day over and over again. It's not great, but it works a bit better than you might think it would, according to reviewers.

poster The Blackcoat's Daughter Trailers

Blu-ray and DVD Buy From Amazon

This debut feature from writer-director Oz Perkins originally premiered way back at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival under the title February. It was delayed so long that Perkins' second film, I Am the Pretty Thing that Lives in the House, reached audiences well before Blackcoat did this spring. While multi-year delays are typically a huge red flag, this horror film is an exception. Set at an all girl’s Catholic school during winter break, Blackcoat focuses on two girls, Kat (Kiernan Shipka) and Rose (Lucy Boynton), who are stranded at the isolated school while a third girl, Joan (Emma Roberts), struggles to reach them.
