▣ The Glass Castle Trailers
Brie Larson reunites with her Short Term 12 director, Destin Cretton, for this moderately successful adaptation of Jeannette Wall’s best-selling memoir. The film details the difficult relationship Jeannette (Larson), the second oldest of four children, has with her alcoholic father (Woody Harrelson) and a mother (Naomi Watts) who was more interested in painting than raising children.
▣ Ingrid Goes West Trailers
At this year’s Sundance Film Festival, writer-director Matt Spicer and co-writer David Branson Smith won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award for this story of Ingrid (Aubrey Plaza), a mentally disturbed young woman who becomes obsessed with a social media star played by Elizabeth Olsen.
▣ Patti Cake$ Trailers
Music video director Geremy Jasper’s debut feature stars Danielle Macdonald as Patricia “Killa P” Dombrowski, a bartender in New Jersey who hopes her rap skills can lead her to fame and fortune. While critics split on the effectiveness of the film’s familiar story beats, they agreed on Macdonald’s undeniable star power.
▣ Your Name. Trailers
The highest-grossing anime film in history, Makoto Shinkai's fifth feature is based on his own novel detailing the star-crossed relationship between Mitsuha, a high school girl living in rural Japan, and Taki, a high school boy living in Tokyo, who swap bodies. The film gets an official English-language Blu-ray/DVD release this week (following an import Blu-ray release in August).

▣ Atomic Blonde Trailers
In this adaptation of the graphic novel The Coldest City, Charlize Theron plays secret agent Lorraine Broughton, a combination of James Bond and John Wick. Tasked to deliver a priceless dossier in Berlin, she partners with station chief David Percival (James McAvoy) and takes on every spy that comes her way. Directed by David Leitch (John Wick and Deadpool 2), the film earned praise at its SXSW debut for its action set pieces (especially a “one”-take staircase sequence) and Theron’s lead performance.
▣ Brigsby Bear Trailers
Produced by The Lonely Island and co-written by and starring SNL’s Kyle Mooney, Dave McCary’s debut feature follows 25-year-old James (Mooney) as he copes with the sudden end of his favorite TV show, Brigsby Bear Adventures. Realizing that he’s the only person who has seen the show, James sets out to finish the story himself. Critics admire the film's sincere heart as well as Mooney's performance.
▣ Harmonium Trailers
Well received at its Cannes debut in 2016, the latest feature from provocative Japanese filmmaker Koji Fukada is a spiritual successor to his 2010 film, Hospitalité, though it mostly drops that feature's darkly comedic tone in favor of a more sober exploration of family tragedy and forgiveness.
▣ In This Corner Of The World Trailers
Sunao Katabuchi’s award-winning animated film is adapted from the manga by Fumiyo Kono and set in Hiroshima during World War II. The film follows 18-year-old Suzu Urano as she moves to the port city of Kure 15 miles from Hiroshima to live with her husband’s family. The film is an intimate look at the daily impact of the war and the emotional toll it takes on a young girl growing up in a chaotic time.
▣ Kedi Trailers
This charming documentary, which follows seven of the thousands of cats that roam the Turkish city of Istanbul, finally comes to home video after playing in theaters for a large portion of 2017.
▣ Wind River Trailers
The directorial debut of Hell or High Water and Sicario screenwriter Taylor Sheridan is set on an Indian reservation, where a U.S. Fish & Wildlife agent (Jeremy Renner) and a rookie FBI agent (Elizabeth Olsen) team up to solve the murder of a teenage girl. Featuring a supporting cast that includes Graham Greene and Gil Birmingham, the film has mostly good reviews from Sundance and Cannes (where Sheridan won the Best Director prize in the Un Certain Regard section of the festival).

▣ Beach Rats Trailers
Writer-director Eliza Hittman’s follow-up to her 2013 Sundance debut It Felt Like Love also premiered at Sundance, where it earned her the Directing Award in the U.S. Dramatic competition in January. Like her first film, Beach Rats looks at burgeoning sexuality, but this time Hittman focuses on the opposite sex, a boy named Frankie (newcomer Harris Dickinson in a widely praised lead performance) who is struggling to come to terms with his attraction to men while spending time with his girlfriend and troublesome friends.
▣ Good Time Trailers
The latest from Heaven Knows What directors Josh and Benny Safdie follows a small-time hood played by Robert Pattinson through a desperate night as he tries to save his learning-disabled brother after a botched bank robbery. The film didn’t win any major awards when it premiered in Cannes (Daniel Lopatin’s score won the independent Soundtrack Award), but the reviews were excellent, especially for Pattinson’s performance.
▣ Lemon Trailers
Isaac Lachmann (Brett Gelman) is 40. His girlfriend (Judy Greer) is leaving him, and his career is going nowhere. But his mid-life crisis produces plenty of cringe-worthy comedy in Janicza Bravo’s feature directing debut (co-written with Gelman, her husband and star). Bravo has assembled a wealth of comedic talent (Michael Cera, Nia Long, Fred Melamed, Jeff Garlin, Gillian Jacobs, Martin Starr, and Megan Mullally) to express her unique comedic sensibility, though critics are somewhat divided about the result.
▣ Valerian and the City of A Thousand Planets Trailers
Director Luc Besson returns to ambitious sci-fi world-building for the first time since 1997's The Fifth Element with this stylized adaptation of the the graphic novel series Valerian and Laurelin. Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne head a cast that also includes Rihanna, Clive Owen, Ethan Hawke, John Goodman, and Rutger Hauer. Critics find it nice to look at, and some admire its strangeness, though many think it's too much of a mess overall to recommend it.

▣ Logan Lucky Trailers
Steven Soderbergh’s return to feature filmmaking is being described as an Appalachian take on his previous Ocean's Eleven formula—and critics seem to like it. The script, credited to Rebecca Blunt, follows brothers Jimmy (Channing Tatum) and Clyde (Adam Driver) Logan as they plan and attempt a robbery during the Coca-Cola 600 NASCAR race. Aiding them are their sister (Riley Keough), and a convicted explosives expert named Joe Bang (Daniel Craig). The film’s strong supporting cast includes Katie Holmes, Katherine Waterston, Sebastian Stan, Seth MacFarlane, Dwight Yoakam, Macon Blair, and Hilary Swank.
▣ Lost in Paris Trailers
This mostly charming and old-fashioned comedy—the fourth collaboration between filmmakers Dominique Abel and Fiona Gordon—follows Canadian librarian Fiona (Gordon) as she travels to Paris to visit her aunt Martha (Emmanuelle Riva). When she reaches Paris, she discovers that Martha has disappeared and is joined on her adventures by a irrepressible tramp (Abel).
▣ Super Dark Times Trailers
Kevin Phillips' unnerving debut feature earned solid reviews on the festival circuit before playing in a few theaters this fall. Written by Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski, the thriller follows high school friends Zach (Owen Phillips) and Josh (Charlie Tahan) as their lives spiral out of control after a bloody accident. Josh begins to exhibit disturbing behavior, and Zach tries to deal with his guilt as Allison (Elizabeth Cappuccino), their mutual crush, begins to show interest in him.
