. Chevalier Trailers
Director Athina Rachel Tsangari’s previous feature, Attenberg, was a unique female coming-of-age story. In her latest, she offers a highly original look at masculinity in the modern age. Set on a luxury yacht in the Aegean Sea, the Greek-language film follows six men whose fishing trip turns into a contest when a game is introduced to determine who is “the best at everything” or the “Chevalier.”
. Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV Trailers
Square Enix's Final Fantasy XV isn't out until late November, but it already has a movie tie-in, featuring the voices of Sean Bean, Lena Headey, and Aaron Paul. Critics point out that you don't have to have any pre-existing Final Fantasy knowledge to understand the film, though it's hard to think of any reason to see it if you aren't already a FF die-hard.
. Microbe and Gasoline Trailers
The latest curio from writer-director Michel Gondry looks is a return to form after the disappointment of Mood Indigo. This coming-of-age story chronicles the friendship between two teen outcasts: Microbe, a shy, aspiring artist who lives with his overprotective mother (Audrey Tautou), and Gasoline, an outsider in a red biker jacket more interested in engines than girls. Together, they build a car (that looks more like a house) using a scooter engine and other scraps. Gondry’s quirk and creativity are once again on display, but this time they serve the narrative instead of overwhelming it.
. The Purge: Election Year Trailers
The third installment in the anything-goes-for-one-night horror series follows The Purge and The Purge: Anarchy. Frank Grillo and Elizabeth Mitchell star in a story that finds a presidential candidate caught outside on the night in question. It may not be the most incisive bit of political satire you'll see this year, but many reviewers think it is the best of the three films in the series.
. Swiss Army Man Trailers
The so-called "Daniel Radcliffe farting corpse movie" finds the former Harry Potter playing exactly that, and a bit more. Paul Dano stars as a hopeless man stranded on an island who discovers Radcliffe’s corpse, turning him into a multi-purpose tool to help him get home to Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s Sarah. This unconventional love story/bromance split critics at Sundance, with some embracing the continuous farting and others finding the whole crazy enterprise puerile.
. X-Men: Apocalypse Trailers
Oscar Isaac plays the first mutant, the titular Apocalypse, in this inferior sequel to 2014's X-Men: Days of Future Past. Returning for director Bryan Singer are James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Hugh Jackman, Nicholas Hoult, and Jennifer Lawrence, among others. Among the seven films in the franchise, only X-Men Origins: Wolverine has a lower Metascore.

. Blood Father Trailers
Will 2016 go down as the year Mel Gibson revived his career? His upcoming directorial effort Hacksaw Ridge has been earning decent reviews, as did this thriller, his first leading role in years. Blood Father stars Gibson as an ex-con who must protect his 16-year-old daughter (Erin Moriarty) from a gang of drug dealers. Directed by Jean-François Richet (Mesrine: Killer Instinct, Mesrine: Public Enemy No. 1) the film also stars William H. Macy, Elisabeth Rohm, and Diego Luna.
. Ghostbusters (2016) Trailers
Retitled Ghostbusters: Answer the Call for its home video release (which features a new extended edition in addition to the theatrical release in its Blu-ray version), this gender-reversed remake of the beloved 1980s comedy classic earned middling reviews from critics (and much worse from internet commenters) when it was released this summer. Director Paul Feig’s film stars Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones.
. The Infiltrator Trailers
Bryan Cranston stars as federal agent Robert "Bob" Mazur in this true story about the 1986 attempt to take down Pablo Escobar through his top lieutenant Roberto Alcaino (Benjamin Bratt). Mazur posed as a money-laundering businessman and teamed up with fellow agent Emir Abreu (John Leguizamo) and rookie agent Kathy Ertz (Diane Kruger), who posed as his fiancé. The film is directed by Brad Furman (The Lincoln Lawyer, Runner Runner) from a screenplay by Ellen Brown Furman based on Mazur’s book.
. The Legend of Tarzan Trailers
Frequent Harry Potter director David Yates helms this latest adaptation of the Tarzan story to the big screen. Alexander Skarsgård, Samuel L. Jackson, Margot Robbie, Djimon Hounsou, and Christoph Waltz star. Critics dismissed this new tale as dull and glum, with reviewers noting more interest in the CGI backdrops than what is happening in front of them.
. Life, Animated Trailers
At this year’s Sundance Film Festival, director Roger Ross Williams (God Loves Uganda) won the documentary directing award for this look at Owen Suskind, an autistic young man who learned to communicate with his family through Disney animated films. Reviewers found it to be an inspiring look at the perseverance and love required to deal with such a complex disorder.

. Alice Through the Looking Glass Trailers
You can't blame Tim Burton for this dud. The Muppets director James Bobin took the reins for this sequel to Burton's 2010 hit Alice in Wonderland. Returning stars Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, and Helena Bonham Carter are joined by Sacha Baron Cohen, and the results are even more disastrous than you may have expected, with critics finding it joyless, strained, and particularly weak in the story department. It is one of 2016's biggest box office flops.
. Café Society Trailers
Once again, Woody Allen has gathered a stellar cast (Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Steve Carell, Corey Stoll, Parker Posey, Paul Schneider, Blake Lively) for a film critics at its Cannes premiere deemed watchable, enjoyable, charming, and ... relatively mediocre. Not his best but also far from his worst, Allen’s 47th feature follows Eisenberg’s Bobby Dorfman as he moves from New York to Los Angeles in the 1930s to work for his uncle (Carell), a top agent to the stars. There, he falls in love with Stewart’s Vonnie.
. Independence Day: Resurgence Trailers
This belated sequel to the 1996 alien invasion thriller Independence Day returns stars Jeff Goldblum, Liam Hemsworth, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, and Vivica A. Fox (but not Will Smith). Director Roland Emmerich also returns, but the fun doesn't, according to critics, who instead mostly found it tedious. Audiences stayed away too, with Resurgence earning less than half of the original's box office grosses even before accounting for inflation.
. The Night Of
A loose adaptation of Peter Moffat's 2008 BBC series Criminal Justice, this eight-part HBO crime drama from Steven Zaillian and Richard Price was originally intended as a starring vehicle for James Gandolfini. After his death, Robert De Niro signed on to star, but then had to back out due to a scheduling conflict. Instead, John Turturro takes the lead as a defense attorney whose client, a Pakistani-American college student (Nightcrawler's Riz Ahmed), stands accused of murdering a woman on New York's Upper West Side. Zaillian directs all but one episode of a series that earned stellar reviews from critics even if the miniseries didn't end quite as strongly as it began.

. Captain Fantastic Trailers
In writer-director Matt Ross’ follow-up to 28 Hotel Rooms, Viggo Mortensen stars as Ben, a father raising six children off the grid until his bipolar wife commits suicide while in the hospital. Determined to give her the burial she wants, he packs the kids into the family bus to confront his wife’s parents (Frank Langella and Ann Dowd), stopping to see his sister (Kathryn Hahn), brother-in-law (Steve Zahn) and their two kids, who are living a plugged-in life. Critics admired Mortensen’s performance more than the film as a whole.
. Lights Out Trailers
David Sandberg makes his feature directing debut with this expansion of his own three-minute short. Written by Eric Heisserer (Final Destination 5), the spooky story follows Rebecca (Teresa Palmer), whose childhood fears return when she sees her little brother Martin (Gabriel Bateman) experiencing the same terrifying events—the appearance of a strange woman with an attachment to their mother (Maria Bello).
