War Horse 72 Add to Netflix Queue Watch Trailer
One of two Steven Spielberg films released last December, this best picture nominee is an adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s 1982 novel. Spielberg was actually inspired to make the film after seeing a production of Nick Stafford's award-winning stage adaptation in London (now a hit on Broadway as well), though the film takes a more realistic approach to the material. The story revolves around the relationship between Albert (newcomer Jeremy Irvine) and his horse, Joey, during World War I. The strong supporting cast includes Emily Watson, Tom Hiddleston, Benedict Cumberbatch, David Thewlis, and Niels Arestrup.

We Bought a Zoo 58 Add to Netflix Queue Watch Trailer
A strong cast headlined by Matt Damon and Scarlett Johansson (and also featuring Thomas Haden Church, Elle Fanning, and Patrick Fugit) marks Cameron Crowe's return to dramatic filmmaking for the first time since 2005's tepid Elizabethtown 45, with results only moderately better. Based on the memoir by Benjamin Mee, the literally titled We Bought a Zoo centers on a man who unexpectedly moves his family to a run-down zoo (in California, rather than the book's England) and attempts to bring it back to life while his wife is dying from cancer. (It's less depressing than it sounds, though, as that Metascore indicates, it doesn't make for a great film, either.) Sigur Rós frontman Jónsi provides the score.

The Darkest Hour 16 Add to Netflix Queue Watch Trailer
This alien invasion thriller finds Emile Hirsch and Olivia Thirlby among a group of five young people stranded in Moscow when aliens attack. You may remember it from its December theatrical release, but then again, you may not; it flopped with audiences, and that terrible Metascore made it the third worst-reviewed film of 2011.

The Iron Lady 54 Add to Netflix Queue Watch Trailer
Meryl Streep puts on her best English accent (and some bad dental work) to play former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in a biopic that reunites the actress with her Mamma Mia! director Phyllida Lloyd. The remainder of the cast is actually British, with Jim Broadbent in the biggest secondary role as Thatcher's husband. As expected, Streep took home an Oscar statuette for her performance, though the film itself earned middling reviews.

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol 73 +Queue Trailer
The fourth Mission: Impossible film proved to be one of (if not the) most entertaining in the series. Director Brad Bird made a successful transition from critically acclaimed animated films such as The Incredibles 90 and The Iron Giant 85 to live action, making the most of locations ranging from Dubai to Moscow and a strong cast that adds Jeremy Renner and Tom Wilkinson alongside returnees Tom Cruise and Simon Pegg. Unless you have a home IMAX theater, however, you'll be missing out on some of the spectacle of the theatrical version.

Shame 72 Add to Netflix Queue Watch Trailer
Steve McQueen’s follow-up to 2008’s Hunger 82 re-teams the director with that film’s star, Michael Fassbender, but this time the setting is present-day New York, and the one-word title refers to a different physical and emotional toll: sexual addiction. Fassbender plays Brandon, whose life is disrupted when his sister Sissy, played by Carey Mulligan, asks to stay at his apartment. Though Fassbender was named best actor at the Venice Film Festival for his strong performance, he was overlooked at the Oscars, with the film's NC-17 rating probably not helping matters.

Contraband 51 Add to Netflix Queue Watch Trailer
Mark Wahlberg stars in this so-so remake of the Icelandic thriller Reykjavik-Rotterdam from that film’s star and producer, Baltasar Kormákur. This time, Kormákur directs, as he’s done previously on 101 Reykjavik, The Sea, Jar City 75, and Inhale 39. The film follows Wahlberg’s former smuggler as he returns to his old ways to help out his wife’s brother. Kate Beckinsale plays his wife, Giovanni Ribisi plays the bad guy, and other supporting roles are filled by Ben Foster, J.K. Simmons, Lukas Haas, and Diego Luna.
