Hyde Park on Hudson 55 Add to Netflix Queue Watch Trailer
In June 1939, King George VI (of The King’s Speech fame) became the first English king to visit the United States, spending a weekend with President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Director Roger Michell's (Notting Hill) drama recounts the events of the weekend and also addresses rumors about FDR's affair(s), including a liaison with distant cousin Margaret "Daisy" Suckley, though it does so only semi-successfully, according to critics. Bill Murray stars as FDR, and he's joined by Laura Linney and Olivia Williams.

Django Unchained 81 Add to Netflix Queue Watch Trailer
Quentin Tarantino rewrites history once again, this time with a revenge story set in the pre-Civil War south, and the result is his highest-grossing film to date. Jamie Foxx stars as the freed slave Django, who is enlisted by a bounty hunter (Christoph Waltz, winning an Oscar for his performance) to settle an old score. In return, he helps Django rescue his wife (Kerry Washington) from an evil plantation owner (Leonardo DiCaprio). In typical Tarantino fashion, there's an eclectic soundtrack, plenty of extreme violence, and dialogue that's several levels above other action films.

Gangster Squad 40 Add to Netflix Queue
Despite a strong ensemble cast that includes Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin, Sean Penn, Nick Nolte, Michael Pena, and Emma Stone, the third feature from director Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) didn't make much of an impression on critics or moviegoers when it was finally released (delayed from last fall) in January. Based loosely on a true story, the period drama looks at the cops battling gangster Mickey Cohen in late 1940s Los Angeles.

The Impossible 73 Add to Netflix Queue
Juan Antonio Bayona’s follow-up to 2007‘s The Orphanage is a drama based around the deadly tsunami of 2004. Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor star as the parents of three boys struggling to survive and reunite following the devastating natural disaster. The impressively constructed opening tsunami sequence alone is probably worth a rental.

Promised Land 55 Add to Netflix Queue
Based on a short story by Dave Eggers, this middling drama looks at a small town's fight attempts to prevent a natural gas fracking operation from coming online. Originally set to be Matt Damon's directorial debut (he remains in the cast, and wrote the screenplay with his co-star, John Krasinski), the film is instead helmed by Gus Van Sant, who previously worked with Damon on Good Will Hunting and Gerry. Frances McDormand, Hal Holbrook, and Rosemarie DeWitt also star.

The Guilt Trip 50 Add to Netflix Queue
Seth Rogen stars as an inventor who decides to take his mother (Barbra Streisand), on the road with him as he tries to sell his revolutionary organic cleaner in this comedy written by Dan Fogelman (Crazy, Stupid, Love) and directed by Anne Fletcher (27 Dresses). Over the course of eight days and 3,000 miles, mother and son share plenty of awkward moments that eventually bring them closer together, while sharing scenes with the likes of Adam Scott, Colin Hanks, Yvonne Strahovski, Danny Pudi, Casey Wilson, and Dale Dickey. Critics liked the cast, but many felt they were betrayed by a weak script.

Not Fade Away 65 Add to Netflix Queue
With his first feature film, David Chase, the creator of The Sopranos, stays in his native New Jersey but shifts his focus away from the mob and onto the '60s and the influence of music and pop culture on a generation of suburban kids. In this coming-of-age story, Chase’s stand-in is Doug (John Magaro) whose insistence on pursuing rock ‘n’ roll fame full time goes against his working class father’s wishes. The film also explores class dynamics through Doug’s relationship with the much wealthier Grace (Bella Heathcote). Chase brings in a familiar face—James Gandolfini—to play Doug’s tough but loving father, while another Sopranos vet, E Street Band guitarist Steven Van Zandt, serves as music supervisor.

Silver Linings Playbook 81 Add to Netflix Queue
Easily director David O. Russell's (The Fighter) highest-grossing film to date, this feel-good dramedy was one of the surprise hits of late 2012, and it ultimately earned eight Academy Award nominations. Based on Matthew Quick’s 2008 debut novel, the film tells the story of a former high school teacher (Bradley Cooper) who, after being released from a mental institution, moves back in with his sports-obsessed parents (Robert De Niro and Jacki Weaver) and strikes up a relationship with an odd, mentally unstable girl (Jennifer Lawrence). All four of those actors were nominated for Oscars (though only Lawrence won), and they're joined by Chris Tucker, John Ortiz, and Julia Stiles.
