47 Ronin 29 Watch Trailer
+Netflix Queue Buy From Amazon
Finally reaching theaters last December after over a year of delays, this 18th century 3D action-fantasy stars Keanu Reeves and a mostly Japanese cast in a retelling of one of that country's most famous samurai legends, albeit one now filled with witches and CGI dragons, with a massive budget under the guidance of first-time director Carl Erik Rinsch. If none of that sounds like a good idea to you, you're not alone. A massive box office flop in addition to a lousy film, 47 Ronin could go down as a cautionary tale in filmmaking history, but that would imply that Hollywood has the ability to learn from its mistakes.
Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues 61 Watch Trailer
+Netflix Queue Buy From Amazon
Nearly a decade after the original Anchorman film debuted, Ron Burgundy and the Channel 4 News Team are back to take on the 24-hour news cycle at GNN in New York City, and that means a new boss (Meagan Good) and new competition (James Marsden and Harrison Ford) for Ron, as well as a new love interest (Kristen Wiig) for Steve Carell’s Brick. The Blu-ray release includes three different versions of the film: the original theatrical cut in both R-rated and unrated versions, and the second theatrical release featuring over 700 new jokes.
Broadchurch: Season 1 91
One of the best-reviewed new TV dramas of 2013, the ITV-produced Broadchurch might be be among the year's bleakest TV offerings (and that's saying something). But it features strong performances throughout, especially from leads David Tennant (Doctor Who) and Olivia Colman (Peep Show) as the lead detectives on a murder investigation that rips apart a peaceful seaside town in Britain. A second season is on the way, and Tennant will also reprise his role (albeit with a different accent and in a different locale) for a Fox remake called Gracepoint, to debut next season.

August: Osage County 58 Watch Trailer
+Netflix Queue Buy From Amazon
The second theatrical feature from TV veteran John Wells (ER, The West Wing) is an adaptation of Tracy Letts’ Pulitzer- and Tony-winning play, though the running time has been shortened and the ending altered. The strong cast is topped by Meryl Streep as the matriarch of the Weston family, who, after their alcoholic father (Sam Shepard) passes away, return to the house where they grew up. Julia Roberts plays Streep’s daughter, who is separated from her husband (Ewan McGregor) and has a daughter of her own (Abigail Breslin). Juliette Lewis and Julianne Nicholson play Streep’s other daughters, and Margo Martindale also stars as Streep’s sister, while Benedict Cumberbatch and Chris Cooper are Martindale’s son and husband. It may have been Oscar bait, but few Academy voters bit, though Streep and Roberts did get nominations.
Grudge Match 35 Watch Trailer
+Netflix Queue Buy From Amazon
It sounds like a dream matchup: a faceoff between on-screen boxers played by Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro, stars of Rocky and Raging Bull, respectively. Unfortunately, their bout came in 2013, not 1983. Peter Segal's film (which also stars Alan Arkin and Kevin Hart) is, at least, played for laughs, though few critics were amused.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug 66 Watch Trailer
+Netflix Queue Buy From Amazon
Part two of Peter Jackson’s three-film expansion of The Hobbit continues the story of Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage), and Gandalf (Ian McKellen) as they fight to reclaim the Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor. Standing in their way is the dragon Smaug (motion capture and voice by Benedict Cumberbatch). Joining the fight are Lee Pace as Thranduil, Evangeline Lilly as Tauriel, Luke Evans as Bard The Bowman, Mikael Persbrandt as the shapeshifting Beorn and, making a welcome return, Orlando Bloom as Legolas. While unquestionably a hit, Smaug continued the downward box office trend of Jackson's Tolkien franchise, though critics liked the film slightly better than the previous Hobbit movie.

Philomena 76 Watch Trailer
+Netflix Queue Buy From Amazon
A surprise best picture nominee, this Stephen Frears (The Queen) drama was adapted from Martin Sixsmith’s 2009 book The Lost Child of Philomena Lee by Steve Coogan and Jeff Pope. This true story stars Coogan as ex-BBC correspondent Sixsmith, and Judi Dench as Philomena Lee, an elderly woman searching for the son she gave up (with a strong push from the Catholic Church) as a young unwed mother. The character-driven film earned mostly positive comments from critics, especially for Dench's performance.
Ride Along 41 Watch Trailer
+Netflix Queue Buy From Amazon
A record-setting hit earlier this year despite reviews that were middling at best, this buddy-action-comedy stars Kevin Hart and Ice Cube; the former plays a security guard with hopes of marrying the latter’s sister, but to prove he’s worthy, Cube takes Hart on his own version of a training day. Tim Story (Think Like a Man) directs from a script from numerous writers (including Jason Mantzoukas). A sequel is already in pre-production and is set for an early 2016 release.
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty 54 Watch Trailer
+Netflix Queue Buy From Amazon
It certainly isn't one of Ben Stiller's better films as a director, but his adaptation of James Thurber’s short story "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" did please some critics and Metacritic users. Directing from a script by Steve Conrad (The Weather Man, The Pursuit of Happyness), Stiller plays a daydreaming photo editor whose search for a lost negative leads him into a real-life adventure. He's joined by Kristen Wiig as his love interest, Adam Scott as his new boss, Shirley MacLaine as his mother, Kathryn Hahn as his sister, and Sean Penn as the sought-after photographer.

Big Bad Wolves 63 Watch Trailer
+Netflix Queue Buy From Amazon
Best known as the film that Quentin Tarantino named the best of 2013, this Israeli thriller offers a sly mix of violence and black comedy about a detective and a father who seek revenge against the same man, a suspected child killer. Most critics found it fairly gruesome, but many admired its surprises and humor.

Escape From Tomorrow 58 Watch Trailer
+Netflix Queue Buy From Amazon
More notable for how it was filmed than the end result, this 2013 Sundance entry marks the debut for director Randy Moore, who surreptitiously shot the black-and-white feature at both Disneyland and Disney World without the entertainment giant's permission or knowledge. Escape documents a family of four’s last day on vacation at the Florida resort, a trip that quickly turns surreal for the father, Jim, after he learns he no longer has a job. While some reviewers believed the making-of story was more intriguing than the film, others embraced the film’s surreal dark comedy and attempts at satire as it plays with Disney iconography.
Labor Day 52 Watch Trailer
+Netflix Queue Buy From Amazon
Critics were disappointed by Jason Reitman’s latest, an adaptation of Joyce Maynard’s 2009 novel, resulting in his lowest Metascore to date by a wide margin. The story takes place over a long weekend in 1987 leading to the titular day as Adele (Kate Winslet) and her 13-year-old son, Henry (Gattlin Griffith), are held captive and then quickly won over by Frank (Josh Brolin), an escaped convict. Tobey Maguire narrates the film as the grown-up Henry, reflecting on events that would forever change his life.
The Legend of Hercules 22 Watch Trailer
+Netflix Queue Buy From Amazon
The first of two Hercules movies set to hit theaters in 2014, The Legend of Hercules bombed upon its release in January. This one comes from Renny Harlin, who hadn't made a good film in decades (and still hasn't), with Kellan Lutz (Twilight) starring as the mythical hero. There wasn't a single critic (or even Metacritic user) giving the film a positive review, though the Village Voice admits, "There are lots of battles." Can Harlin-esque director Brett Ratner beat that 22 score with his own Hercules film this summer? Oh, the suspense.
