Lone Survivor 60 Watch Trailer
Buy From Amazon +Netflix Queue
A six-years-in-the-making passion project for Peter Berg, who wrote and directed the film, Afghanistan war drama Lone Survivor is an adaptation of Marcus Luttrell’s book Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of SEAL Team 10. Mark Wahlberg, Taylor Kitsch (Berg's star on Battleship and TV's Friday Night Lights), Ben Foster, and Emile Hirsch star as members of a SEAL team on a 2005 mission called "Operation Red Wings,” during which the four soldiers seek to capture or kill Taliban leader Ahmad Shahd but encounter more than 100 enemy soldiers before they can do so. The intense combat (which occupies most of the running time) thrilled some critics, but left others wanting something more.
RoboCop (2014) 52 Watch Trailer

Eventually, studios will learn that remaking Paul Verhoeven movies is not a good idea. (Remember that new Total Recall?) Sadly, that lesson didn't sink in prior to this remake of Verhoeven's 1987 cult classic about a murdered Detroit cop who is brought back to life by an evil corporation as part man, part machine (then, played by Peter Weller; now, by The Killing's Joel Kinnaman). Despite some interesting casting choices (Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, Samuel L. Jackson), the first Hollywood (and English-language) film for Brazilian director José Padilha (Bus 174) added little new to the story aside from updated effects, and American moviegoers mostly stayed away.

Alan Partridge 67 Watch Trailer
Buy From Amazon +Netflix Queue
Having already appeared in multiple radio and TV series, a web series, live shows, and even in his own book, Steve Coogan’s beloved character finally made the jump to the big screen in this comedy, also known as Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa overseas. Alan Partridge finds our hero hosting a mid-morning show on North Norfolk Digital radio until a media conglomerate takes over the station and fires his co-worker, D.J. Pat (Colm Meaney), who promptly takes the station hostage. Will Alan be able to save himself or, perhaps, someone other than himself? The film seemed to go over better with UK reviewers than the Americans, but any fans of the character should be happy with the result, and a sequel is reportedly set to begin filming this summer.
Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit 57 Watch Trailer
Buy From Amazon +Netflix Queue
Well this wasn't exactly the reboot that Paramount was hoping for. Chris Pine (Star Trek) takes on the role of the Tom Clancy-created CIA agent once played by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, and, most recently (in 2002's The Sum of All Fears), Ben Affleck, though the Shadow Recruit isn't based on a specific Clancy book, and was actually pieced together from the leftovers of various scripts written over the past decade. The action-heavy final result features Ryan's origin story and a terrorist plot against the U.S. economy. Kevin Costner and Keira Knightley also star for director Kenneth Branagh (Thor), who cast himself as the main villain. Many critics found the film average at best, and its failure to attract younger audiences to theaters means that it may be a while before you see Ryan on the big screen again.

Whereas the much younger Chris Pine proved not to be much of a draw as an action movie star in Jack Ryan, above, sexagenarian Liam Neeson appears to be literally unstoppable. His latest outing as an ass-kicking badass reunites him with director Jaume Collet-Serra (Unknown). Neeson plays an air marshal who finds himself implicated in the hijacking of a flight from New York City to London after receiving mysterious text messages threatening the death of a passenger every twenty minutes until a ransom is paid. While the movie may not live up to its advertising—some critics found the film about as fun as actual air travel—it was another success at the box office for Neeson.
True Detective: Season 1 87
Buy From Amazon +Netflix Queue
Recently nominated for 4 awards from the Television Critics Association—including best overall show of the year—this atmospheric, captivating, and somewhat mystifying HBO drama stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as a pair of homicide detectives embroiled in a 17-year hunt for a serial killer in rural Louisiana. The action takes place in three distinct time periods, alternating between 1995, 2002, and 2012. All eight episodes of the gritty, much-discussed series have the rare luxury of consistency behind the camera: every episode was written by novelist Nic Pizzolatto and directed by Cary Fukunaga (Jane Eyre). The show will return next season with an all new cast and story, centering on three main characters in California.

Ernest & Celestine 86 Watch Trailer
Buy From Amazon +Netflix Queue
A surprise but deserving Oscar nominee for best animated feature, this charming French/Belgian cartoon—featuring hand-drawn artwork rather than computer animation—is based on Gabrielle Vincent's children's book series about an orphan mouse who befriends a bear after he tries to eat her. This American theatrical version features an English-language dub with voices provided by Forest Whitaker, Mackenzie Foy, Lauren Bacall, Paul Giamatti, Megan Mullally, Nick Offerman, William H. Macy, and Jeffrey Wright.

Taking place across three different time periods (1985, 1968, 1932)—depicted in three different aspect ratios (2.35, 1.85, 1.33)—Wes Anderson’s follow-up to Moonrise Kingdom stars Ralph Fiennes as M. Gustave, a concierge at an isolated European hotel, and newcomer Tony Revolori as Zero Moustafa, the lobby boy who becomes his most trusted friend. Together, they get caught up in a battle for a family fortune and the theft and recovery of a priceless painting. Once again Anderson has created his own highly stylized world, inhabited by some returning players (Adrien Brody, Willem Dafoe, Jeff Goldblum, Jason Schwartzman, Edward Norton, Tilda Swinton, Harvey Keitel, Bill Murray, Owen Wilson) and a few welcome rookies (Saoirse Ronan, F. Murray Abraham, Jude Law, and Tom Wilkinson). The result is the director's highest-grossing and best-reviewed release to date.

Many critics saw last year’s Prince Avalanche as a welcome return to form for director David Gordon Green. This year, he managed to impress critics again, while also pulling off the tricky feat of giving Nicolas Cage his first good role (and good movie) in years. This adaptation of Larry Brown’s novel stars Cage as an ex-con who is just trying to stay out of trouble until he meets Gary (Tye Sheridan of The Tree of Life and Mud), a kid he feels he needs to protect. Once again, Green works with cinematographer Tim Orr to bring the South to vivid life, though it is Cage's performance that shines the most.
The Lego Movie 82 Watch Trailer

Though The LEGO Movie could have easily been a cheesy cash-in (or a mere commercial to sell more expensive toy bricks), this animated comedy from Phil Lord and Chris Miller (21 Jump Street, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs) is one of 2014's most pleasant surprises, a fun and funny film that is (as of this writing) the year's highest-grossing film to date. The voice cast features Chris Pratt, Will Arnett, Elizabeth Banks, Channing Tatum, Morgan Freeman, Liam Neeson, and Will Ferrell.

300: Rise of an Empire 48 Watch Trailer
Buy From Amazon +Netflix Queue
It's not the box office dud that we predicted, though it also isn't a memorable film. This belated sequel to the more successful 300 introduces a new director—Noam Murro, who had never directed an action or effects-based film before—and a mostly new cast (not that you can tell, under all those CGI enhancements), led by Eva Green and Sullivan Stapleton (Animal Kingdom). The original film's director, Zack Snyder, co-wrote the screenplay for this naval-themed outing, basing it on Frank Miller's graphic novel Xerxes.

Of course there would have to be two different movies reaching theaters this spring about doppelgangers. While currently playing The Double seems to be the better of the two, a majority of critics also liked (at least somewhat) this existential thriller, an adaptation of José Saramago's novel The Double. (Movie The Double is based on a Dostoyevsky story, not Saramago's.) Re-teaming with Prisoners director Denis Villeneuve, Jake Gyllenhaal plays two roles: Adam Bell is a history professor with a girlfriend (Mélanie Laurent), and Anthony Claire is an actor with a pregnant wife (Sarah Gadon). After Adam sees Anthony in a movie, he tracks his doppelganger down, initiating a series of dangerous events for both men (and the women in their lives).
A Hard Day's Night (1964)
Pop star(s) + movie? That's usually a formula for a naked cash grab, more commerce than art. Of course, the usual rules don't apply to The Beatles, whose movies are one part of their enduring legacy. And none of their films topped this influential screwball comedy classic. Directed by the great Richard Lester, A Hard Day's Night depicts a day (or two) in the life of the Fab Four, playing irreverent, stylized versions of themselves at the height of Beatlemania. This new Criterion Collection release features the newly restored film with your choice of mono, stereo, or 5.1 audio mixes, a variety of old and new documentaries, and numerous additional interviews, shorts, and bonus features.

While adapting an "unfilmable" novel for your directorial debut may be a gutsy choice, it's also, apparently, a stupid one. Veteran screenwriter Akiva Goldsman (an Oscar winner for A Beautiful Mind, and definitely not one for Batman & Robin) opted to take on Mark Helprin's epic fantasy set in an alternative, magic-filled New York City (and spanning the entire 20th century) with a relatively low $60 million budget. Hurricane Sandy added another obstacle, delaying production and the release of the film. A fairly strong cast (Russell Crowe, Colin Farrell, Will Smith, William Hurt, Jennifer Connelly, and Jessica Brown Findlay) was unable to overcome the film's clunkiness, with the result so bad that even the book's numerous fans may find little to like. If you must watch it, you'll probably want to listen to this afterward.
