Veronica Mars 62 Watch Trailer
Buy From Amazon +Netflix Queue
Seven years after it was canceled after a three-season run on TV, Veronica Mars returned as a feature film this spring thanks to a revolutionary Kickstarter campaign. Series creator Rob Thomas serves as writer and director for a film that brings teen sleuth-turned-lawyer Veronica (Kristen Bell) back to Neptune for her 10-year high school reunion and a chance to bail Logan (Jason Dohring) out of a jam one more time. Also returning are Wallace (Percy Daggs III), Mac (Tina Majorino), Piz (Chris Lowell), Dick Casablancas (Ryan Hansen), Eli ‘Weevil’ Navarro (Francis Capra), Vinnie Van Lowe (Ken Marino), and Keith Mars (Enrico Colantoni). Though newcomers won't get much out of Veronica Mars the film, critics agree that it's a treat for longtime fans of the series, who will get a chance to spend a few more hours with some of their favorite characters (even as the film comes across as a pilot to a re-booted series that will likely never come).

Her 90 Watch Trailer
Buy From Amazon +Netflix Queue
The first feature from Spike Jonze in four years tells the story of Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix), a heartbroken letter-writer-for-hire who strikes up a new relationship with Samantha, an advanced mobile operating system that puts Siri to shame and has the voice of Scarlett Johansson. Amy Adams co-stars as Theodore’s best friend, Rooney Mara plays his ex-wife, and Olivia Wilde meets him for a blind date. For the first time in four features, Jonze takes solo writing credit, and the result is among 2013's best films, and the recipient of five Academy Award nominations.
I, Frankenstein 30 Watch Trailer

If the year ahead can bring the umpteenth Godzilla movie, why not revisit Frankenstein, too? Here's one good reason not to do so: I, Frankenstein. Though it gets a few points for being an unconventional take on Frankenstein's monster, based on Underworld star Kevin Grevioux's graphic novel, critics felt that it didn't even meet the already-low quality bar set by the Underworld films. Unsurprisingly, the film (which stars Aaron Eckhart and Yvonne Strahovski) also flopped at the box office.
Is the Man Who Is Tall Happy? 76 Watch Trailer

After first making a name for himself as one of the best (and most original) music video directors in the business, Michel Gondry captivated critics and moviegoers with his second feature film, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. But since then his filmography is littered with failures and only modest successes, though he does get points for mixing things up in terms of genres and budgets. This, the second of Gondry's two 2013 releases, is the director's first documentary, and it is about as unconventional and whimsical an example of the format as you would expect. The film, which consists of an animated (literally) conversation between Gondry and linguist/activist Noam Chomsky, offers insight into both men, resulting in Gondry's best reviews in quite some time.
Stranger by the Lake 82

After collecting a prize for best director in the Un Certain Regard section at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, Alain Guiraudie’s erotic, psychological drama was named the best film of 2013 by Cahiers Du Cinema. Stranger by the Lake follows Frank (Pierre Deladonchamps) as he spends his summer at a popular cruising spot on the shores of a lake in rural France. When he meets Michel (Christophe Paou), he falls blindly in love, but his love is tested when a murder occurs at the lake, and he and Michel become the primary suspects. Sex, death and desire combine to make an incredibly suspenseful film.

About Last Night 62 Watch Trailer
Buy From Amazon +Netflix Queue
Though Edward Zwick's 1986 rom-com About Last Night... (itself based on David Mamet's play Sexual Perversity in Chicago) wasn't exactly crying out for a remake, Hollywood requires that every movie be remade at least once. And the resulting, ellipsis-free reboot turned out to be better than expected. Kevin Hart, Michael Ealy, Regina Hall, and Joy Bryant star for director Steve Pink (Hot Tub Time Machine), and critics found that the excellent lead performances mostly made up for any shortcomings in the script.
Like Someone in Love 76

Abbas Kiarostami’s follow-up to Certified Copy seemed to exasperate most critics when it debuted at Cannes two years ago, but reviewers seemed to warm to it when it made its way to theaters last year. The Tokyo-set drama depicts a quirky love story (of sorts) between a college student moonlighting as a call girl (Rin Takanashi) and a retired professor (Tadashi Okuno), with complications arising when the girl’s jealous boyfriend believes the older gentleman to be her grandfather. This Criterion Collection release includes a making-of documentary among other bonus features.
The Monuments Men 52 Watch Trailer

Though it was billed as something akin to an Oceans 11-style caper set during WWII, George Clooney's fifth feature as director (and the third he's co-written with producing partner Grant Heslov) failed to enchant critics when it arrived in theaters earlier this year (after being delayed from a 2013 awards-season release). Clooney’s adaptation of Robert M. Edsel’s nonfiction book The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History stars Clooney, Matt Damon, Bill Murray, John Goodman, Jean Dujardin, Bob Balaban, and Hugh Bonneville as a group of art experts turned into unlikely soldiers, tasked with finding valuable stolen artwork before the Nazis destroy it.
Pompeii 39 Watch Trailer

It's a disaster, all right. Combine director Paul W. S. Anderson with a B-list cast (headlined by Game of Thrones's Kit Harington), cheesy-looking CGI effects, and subject matter that seems instantly dated in its costume-y, overly dramatic splendor, and you have a future candidate for an episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000, should that show ever get revived. Anderson was actually given his largest budget to date by a wide margin—$100 million—but the film didn't come close to recouping its costs. In the director's defense, it's not his worst film. (This is.)
