It's rare that the best film in an ongoing franchise is the fifth installment, but that's precisely the case with Fast Five, which received far better reviews than any previous Fast and Furious flick while also grossing more than any of its predecessors. It also marked a shift in the series away from street racing and toward more general action, which here revolves around a heist storyline set in Rio de Janeiro. Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, and Dwayne Johnson star.

David Arquette, Neve Campbell, and Courteney Cox are joined by newcomers Emma Roberts and Hayden Panettiere for the first Scream movie in a decade. Unlike those Fast and Furious movies, the Scream franchise has seen diminishing returns over time, with each installment scoring lower than the one before it.

The directorial debut for British comedian Richard Ayoade (The IT Crowd) is a Welsh coming-of-age tale centering on a 15-year-old boy who strives to keep his mother from running off with her life coach, while also attempting to lose his virginity to his pyromaniac girlfriend. The quirky, well-reviewed film drew Wes Anderson comparisons upon its limited release this summer, and the soundtrack features original songs by Alex Turner of the Arctic Monkeys.

posterBlu-ray and DVD Horrible Bosses 57 Add to Netflix Queue Watch Trailer

Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis, and Charlie Day star as three friends who, after a night of drinking, devise a "foolproof" (i.e., not so foolproof) plan to murder their intolerable bosses (manipulative Kevin Spacey, balding coke addict Colin Farrell, and nymphomaniac dentist Jennifer Aniston) in one of this summer's many R-rated comedies, this one directed by Seth Gordon (The King of Kong). While the cast was a bit stronger than the reviews (Jamie Foxx and Donald Sutherland also make appearances), more critics than not liked the film.

posterBlu-ray and DVD The Tree of Life 85 Add to Netflix Queue Watch Trailer

Long on gorgeous imagery and short on plot, Terrence Malick's mysterious and poetic Tree of Life finally emerged in May after months of speculation, and it earned the prestigious Palme d'Or at this year's Cannes festival. Most but not all critics embraced the abstract, two-hour-plus film, but some moviegoers weren't quite as appreciative. Brad Pitt and Sean Penn star.

posterDVD The Trip [Theatrical version] 82 Add to Netflix Queue

In between his numerous other film projects, prolific director Michael Winterbottom found time last year to shoot a six-episode series for the BBC that reunited him with his Tristram Shandy stars Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon. An improvised foodie travelogue, The Trip finds Coogan and Brydon playing versions of themselves as they travel northern England and dine at some of the region's finest restaurants. While that may sound boring, it's anything but; the pair have one hilarious conversation after another throughout their journey. While there are no plans to release the full series in the U.S., this greatly edited version, which screened theatrically in America earlier this year, is now getting a DVD release in the States.

posterBlu-ray and DVD Zookeeper 30 Add to Netflix Queue Watch Trailer

A rare family-friendly comedy for Adam Sandler's Happy Madison Productions, the PG-rated Zookeeper nevertheless received the same reviews that the company's more adult fare typically earns: terrible. Kevin James stars as the titular zoo employee who receives romantic advice from a group of talking animals voiced by the likes of Sandler, Sylvester Stallone, Nick Nolte, Don Rickles, and Cher.

posterBlu-ray and DVD Green Lantern 39 Add to Netflix Queue Watch Trailer

The worst-reviewed and lowest-grossing entry among this summer's crop of superhero films, Green Lantern stars Ryan Reynolds as the DC Comics hero, a test pilot who becomes the first human given the power-granting ring that all Green Lanterns posses. Critics found it silly and over-reliant on CGI.

posterBlu-ray and DVD Bad Teacher 47 Add to Netflix Queue Watch Trailer

Neither the best nor the worst of this summer's R-rated comedies, Bad Teacher stars Cameron Diaz as a foul-mouthed middle school teacher who is more interested in drinking and seducing a substitute teacher played by Justin Timberlake than in teaching her students. Lucy Punch and Jason Segel also star, and the film is directed by Jake Kasdan (Walk Hard).

posterDVD Pearl Jam Twenty 48 Add to Netflix Queue Watch Trailer

The core of Pearl Jam's 20th anniversary celebration (which also includes a 2-CD set and a book) is this documentary directed by Cameron Crowe (Almost Famous). The movie uses rarely- (or never-before-) seen archival footage to chart the rise of the Seattle grunge band from its origins in Mother Love Bone through the present day, and includes plenty of live performance footage.

posterBlu-ray and DVD Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides 45
Add to Netflix Queue Watch Trailer

The fourth film in the Pirates franchise is the first not to be directed by Gore Verbinski; instead, Rob Marshall (Chicago) helmed what turned out to be the worst-reviewed and lowest-grossing (in the U.S.) installment in the series, though it performed well overseas. The cast includes newcomers in Ian McShane (Deadwood) and Penelope Cruz, while Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, and Keith Richards return.

posterBlu-ray and DVD Attack the Block 75 Add to Netflix Queue

This low-budget British alien invasion comedy-thriller about a group of inner-city hoodlums who find themselves saving the world didn't get much of a theatrical release in the U.S., but you'll want to seek it out on video. One of the summer's best-reviewed films, Attack the Block is the directorial debut for comedian Joe Cornish, and features a score by Basement Jaxx. Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead) is the cast member you'll recognize.

posterBlu-ray and DVD Captain America: The First Avenger 66

While Green Lantern (see above) was this summer's worst superhero film, Captain America was its best. Set during WWII, the Marvel adaptation centers on Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), who joins America's secret super-soldier program to battle the Nazi weaponry wiz Red Skull. If you haven't seen it yet, you'll want to do so before next summer's big event arrives: the Joss Whedon-directed The Avengers.

Whoops. My bad, thought you meant the character. Should have realized before I hit submit...

For Pirates, It's 'Blackbeard', not 'Deadwood'.
