posterBlu-ray and DVD The Five-Year Engagement 62 Add to Netflix Queue Watch Trailer

Fans of Forgetting Sarah Marshall 67 might enjoy The Five-Year Engagement, which reunites writer/director Nicholas Stoller with writer/star Jason Segel in a romantic comedy about a couple who repeatedly delay their wedding. Emily Blunt plays Segel’s fiance; Alison Brie plays her sister, and Jacki Weaver plays her mother. Filling out the funny supporting cast are Rhys Ifans, Chris Pratt, Mindy Kaling, Kevin Hart, and Chris Parnell. It's not as good as that earlier film—for one thing, like the engagement itself, the film's a bit too long and draggy—but many critics found it enjoyable.

posterBlu-ray and DVD Safe 55 Add to Netflix Queue Watch Trailer

The safest pick this week for action fans (well, the only pick this week), Safe finds Jason Statham starring as a low-rent MMA fighter who takes on the Triads and the Russian Mafia while trying to protect a young Chinese girl. It's actually the best-reviewed film for director Boaz Yakin (Remember the Titans 48).

posterBlu-ray and DVD Snow White and the Huntsman 57 + Netflix Queue Watch Trailer

The campy Mirror Mirror 46 failed to excite critics or ticket buyers earlier in 2012, but Snow White and the Huntsman was able to rescue the fairy tale’s good name, at least at the box office, if not with reviewers. In this much darker (and more violent) re-imagining of the classic story, evil Queen Raveena (Charlize Theron) hires Chis Hemsworth’s Huntsman to find and kill Snow White (Kristen Stewart), but upon discovering her, the big lug has a change of heart and decides to fight on her side as she seeks her rightful place on the throne. Also joining in the battle are dwarfs played by Ian McShane, Bob Hoskins, Toby Jones, Ray Winstone, and Nick Frost. Commercial director Rupert Sanders makes his feature debut with this action- and effects-heavy epic that proved to be more successful visually than it did story-wise.

posterBlu-ray and DVD What to Expect When You're Expecting 41 +Queue Trailer

Don't let anyone tell you that a story-less, nonfiction guide to pregnancy would make a terrible movie; it turns out that it would only make a mediocre-to-lousy movie. Chris Rock, Elizabeth Banks, Cameron Diaz, Dennis Quaid, Rob Huebel, and Jennifer Lopez head the ensemble cast, and they explore various aspects of childbirth through a collection of comedic storylines. (Well, they are supposed to be comedic, at least.)

posterBlu-ray and DVD The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel 62 + Netflix Queue Watch Trailer

Not your typical summer fare—though don't mistake this British dramedy for something weighty—Marigold stars Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, Maggie Smith, Penelope Wilton, and Dev Patel. Director John Madden has done solid work in years past (Shakespeare in Love 87) and recently (The Debt 65), and the story, based on Deborah Moggach’s novel These Foolish Things, is a genial tale of British retirees spending their waning years in a not quite refurbished hotel run by an young entrepreneur in Jaipur, India. Critics were mostly charmed, though not blown away.

posterBlu-ray and DVD The Cabin in the Woods 72 Add to Netflix Queue Watch Trailer

Normally when a movie is shelved for over a year, it suggests problems with the finished product, but that's not the case for meta-thriller Cabin in the Woods, which was delayed only due to its studio's (MGM) financial problems and stands as one of the most accomplished horror films of the year. Cabin's clever (and frequently funny) script was co-written by Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Drew Goddard (Buffy, Cloverfield, Lost), who also directs for the first time, and the film is intended as a tongue-in-cheek homage to classic horror films, with a bit of a sci-fi twist thrown in for good measure. Chris Hemsworth, Richard Jenkins, Bradley Whitford, and Fran Kranz (Dollhouse) star.

posterDVD Steve Martin: The Television Stuff

Here's a wild and crazy idea: release material from one of the all-time funniest comedians at the peak of his powers on home video. Seems like a no-brainer, yet Steve Martin's numerous television specials have been unavailable on DVD ... until this month, when Shout! Factory collects nearly six hours of footage into this Television Stuff box set. This 3-disc set includes Martin's only two stand-up performances ever recorded in their entirety (both from the late 1970s), four sketch comedy specials that originally aired on NBC, his Oscar-nominated short film The Absent-Minded Waiter, and an assortment of TV appearances spanning from 1966-2005, supplemented with new commentary by the comedian himself.

posterBlu-ray and DVD The Avengers 69 Add to Netflix Queue Watch Trailer

The year's highest grossing film to date, The Avengers unites Marvel heroes like Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America under the guidance of Joss Whedon, directing just his second feature (following the Firefly spinoff Serenity 74). Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, and Chris Hemsworth reprise their starring roles from the previous films, joined by Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), and Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury). They must match wits with Tom Hiddleston's evil Loki, though they would appear to have him outnumbered. The Blu-ray release contains some notable deleted and alternate scenes, including a drastically different opening sequence that would have altered the tone of the film, and a new three-minute introduction for the character of Captain America.

posterBlu-ray and DVD Bond 50

Celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first film featuring Britain's most famous secret agent with this massive box set collecting every one of the official James Bond films (i.e., all those but Never Say Never Again and the original Casino Royale). Nine of the 22 films were previously unavailable in Blu-ray, and all come with bonus features (totaling over 120 hours of extra content). The set includes two newly produced featurettes, and helpfully includes an empty slot for you to add the separately purchased disc for Skyfall when it hits stores next year. (After that, you're out of luck.)

posterBlu-ray and DVD Damsels in Distress 67 Add to Netflix Queue

One of the most unique films released this year, this charming college-set farce isn't for everyone, but fans of its writer/director, Whit Stillman (Metropolitan, Barcelona), will find plenty to like. The elusive Stillman's first film since 1998's The Last Days of Disco 76, Damsels managed to sneak onto a few critic top 10 lists at the end of 2011 despite screening only at festivals (it finally made it into theaters this spring). The unconventional comedy adds song and dance to Stillman's usual smart, stylized dialogue as it explores the lives of a group of college girls led by the perfectly cast Greta Gerwig. Adam Brody also stars.

posterBlu-ray and DVD Klown 62 Add to Netflix Queue

While raunchy comedies have become a staple of the summer moviegoing experience, this Danish entry manages to push the boundaries of discomfort just a little bit further. Based on an equally raunchy Danish TV show created by and starring Frank Hvam and Casper Christensen (as Frank and Casper), this feature-length comedy escalates their hijinks to the extreme when Frank takes his girlfriend’s 12-year-old nephew on a planned weekend of debauchery with Casper to prove that he can be a good father. (Is he successful? What do you think?) Mia Lyhne and Iben Hjejle (Laura in High Fidelity) play their respective girlfriends. Mikkel Nøgaard, who directed most of the TV episodes, helms this feature as well, and it won Best Picture (Comedy) at Fantastic Fest and Best Film at Fantasia.
