Michael Shannon stars as Richard Kuklinski, the notorious real-life contract killer who reportedly murdered over 100 people while simultaneously maintaining a seemingly normal family life. The directorial debut for Ariel Vromen—who received mostly poor marks from critics for his efforts, though Shannon does his best to make the film worth watching—also stars Winona Ryder, Ray Liotta, Chris Evans, and James Franco.

Louis Leterrier (Clash of the Titans 39) directs this crime thriller about a group of magicians (Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher, and Dave Franco) who pull off a series of daring bank heists, while Mark Ruffalo plays the FBI agent who pursues them. Despite middling reviews, the film was a surprise hit this summer, and a sequel (again directed by Leterrier) is in development; check the deleted scene on the Blu-ray release for a clue about its story.

With her first documentary, actress and director Sarah Polley (Away from Her, Take this Waltz) turns the camera on herself and her family in an investigation of memory, truth, and how we tell stories to ourselves and to those we love. Polley’s focus is on her mother and father’s marriage and her relationship to them. While her actress mother (shown in home movie footage) died of cancer when Polley was a child, her father is interviewed by Polley, who also visits with other family members and friends. There's a mystery at the heart of this family story, and the result is a gripping tale and one of the best-reviewed films of the year.

posterBlu-ray and DVD Star Trek Into Darkness 72 Add to Netflix Queue Watch Trailer

J.J. Abrams' second (and lesser) Star Trek feature stars Benedict Cumberbatch, previously best known for portraying Sherlock Holmes in the ongoing British miniseries Sherlock, as a terrorist with a somewhat justified complaint against Starfleet. Saving the day are returning Enterprise crew members Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, John Cho, and Anton Yelchin, while Peter Weller's Admiral Marcus also factors into the story. Note that there have already been complaints about the Blu-ray's dearth of special features (such extras exist, but they are split up among the various "exclusive" editions assigned to various retailers, so any given version will be missing most of them).

Possibly director Steven Soderbergh's final film—though he's been keeping awfully busy since announcing his "retirement"—this made-for-HBO biopic was nominated for 15 Emmy Awards. Based on the book of the same name by Scott Thorson (adapted here by screenwriter Richard LaGravenese), Candelabra depicts the five-year relationship between Thorson (Matt Damon) and famed (and famously flamboyant) pianist/entertainer Liberace (Michael Douglas). Despite the over-the-top sets, costumes, and styling—aside from the leads, you'll also see actors such as Dan Aykroyd, Rob Lowe, and Scott Bakula looking ridiculous—the film takes a mostly serious approach.

Though it's not set in a hotel, Sofia Coppola's fifth feature explores another one of her favorite themes: the lifestyles of the rich and famous. In this ripped-from-the-headlines true story, the crush of celebrity culture and the desire to be famous drives Emma Watson and her gang of friends to rob the homes of celebrities like Paris Hilton, who allowed Coppola to shoot in her home where the actual crime took place. Leslie Mann plays Watson’s mom, while Bush’s Gavin Rossdale plays the helpful dealer of the gang’s stolen goods. Newcomers Israel Broussard, Taissa Farmiga, Katie Chang, and Claire Julien play the other fame-obsessed teens. Critics were mixed, with many finding the film sharp and funny and others deeming it as superficial as its subjects.

The creative pair behind Sound of My Voice 67—writer-director Zal Batmanglij and writer-star Brit Marling—reunite for a 1970s-style paranoid thriller about a former FBI agent (Marling) who infiltrates an anti-corporation anarchist collective, only to find herself falling under the sway of the group's leader. Alexander Skarsgård, Ellen Page, and Patricia Clarkson also star. Most critics liked the film, finding it to be a slick, smart thriller despite a few logic holes.

posterBlu-ray and DVD World War Z 63 Add to Netflix Queue Watch Trailer

After a troubled production that saw the film delayed by nearly six months, World War Z finally reached theaters this summer, and the result was better than anyone could have expected, with over half a billion dollars in grosses and mostly positive reviews. This zombie thriller based on the novel by Max Brooks and stars Brad Pitt as a family man and former U.N. employee who travels the globe looking for a solution to a fast-moving zombie epidemic. Mireille Enos (The Killing) also stars for director Marc Forster (Machine Gun Preacher, Quantum of Solace).

posterBlu-ray and DVD Iron Man 3 62 Add to Netflix Queue Watch Trailer

Just the second film directed by Lethal Weapon screenwriter Shane Black (the first being the Robert Downey Jr.-starring Kiss Kiss Bang Bang), this third Iron Man film received better reviews than the second while grossing more than the first two films combined. Picking up after the events of The Avengers, the film finds Tony Stark/Iron Man facing off against Ben Kingsley as the Mandarin and Guy Pearce as Aldrich Killian. Returning to aid in the proceedings are Gwyneth Paltrow (Pepper Potts), Don Cheadle (James Rhodes/War Machine), and Jon Favreau (Happy Hogan).

posterBlu-ray and DVD Room 237 80 Add to Netflix Queue Watch Trailer

Some movie fans love The Shining, director Stanley Kubrick's lone foray into the horror genre. Others find the material beneath the talents of such an accomplished director (though even many of the film's biggest critics have grown to appreciate the film more in recent years). And then there is a third group of people who see numerous coded messages hidden within the colors, numbers, and music of Kubrick's film—messages about genocide, government conspiracies, and more. It is this latter group of obsessives that is the subject of the entertaining documentary Room 237, which received strong reviews at 2012's Sundance festival and when it was released in theaters during the spring.
