From Breaking Bad to bad brakes

Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul stars as an ex-con seeking revenge on his old partner in this adaptation of the video game series from Electronic Arts. Dominic Cooper, Imogen Poots, Michael Keaton, Kid Cudi, and Dakota Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey) also star. Scott Waugh (Act of Valor) directs from a script by George Nolfi (The Adjustment Bureau), John Gatins (Flight), and George Gatins. Need For Speed hits theaters March 14, 2014.

Jude Law is Dom Hemingway

Richard Shepard’s first feature film since 2005’s The Matador stars Jude Law as Dom Hemingway, a foul-mouthed safecracker recently released from prison. With his buddy Dickie (Richard E. Grant), Dom seeks out his boss, Mr. Fontaine (Demian Bichir), to collect his reward for keeping his mouth shut and spending 12 years in prison. But when a night of partying gets out of hand, Dom ends up on his daughter’s doorstep. Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) plays Dom’s daughter in this fall film festival crowd-pleaser. Look for Dom Hemingway in U.S. theaters beginning April 4, 2014.

The tease continues: Lars von Trier’s Nymphomaniac, chapter 4

Chapter 4 of Lars von Trier’s Nymphomaniac is titled “Delirium,” and is described thusly on the movie's website: “Confusion. Delusion. Hallucination. The nymphomaniac's father dies.” That seems straightforward enough, but the clip representing the chapter is a black and white shot of Charlotte Gainsbourg walking toward a hospital as Stellan Skarsgard’s voiceover recites the first lines of Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Fall of the House of Usher.” Perhaps he reads the book to her as she recovers under his care in the framing story of the film, or it might not be in the final film at all. Either way, there’s plenty to look forward to in the coming months: Chapter 5: The Little Organ School, Chapter 6: The Eastern & Western Church (The Silent Duck), Chapter 7: The Mirror, Chapter 8: The Gun. Nymphomaniac will open in Denmark on December 25th. A U.S. date has not been set.

Broken Circle Breakdown

Felix Van Groeningen (The Misfortunates) directs this tale of tragic romance that won the Audience Award at this year’s Berlin Film Festival and best screenplay at the Tribeca Film Festival. The film chronicles the love between Elise (Veerle Baetens, best actress winner at Tribeca), a tattoo artist, and Didier (Johan Heldenbergh), a bluegrass musician, as they bond over their love of American roots music and start a family. The Broken Circle Breakdown hits theaters November 1st.

Critics in the U.K. and elsewhere have not been impressed with Downfall director Oliver Hirschbiegel’s Diana, but maybe this first trailer from Entertainment One, who will be releasing the film in the U.S. on November 1st, will win some over. Naomi Watts stars as Princess Diana, and the film focuses on the last two years of Diana’s life and her romance with heart surgeon Hasnat Khan (Naveen Andrews).

New trailers for three animated films

With the release of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 comes the chance to see what the next few animated films have to offer. First up is Free Birds, the story of two turkeys, voiced by Owen Wilson and Woody Harrelson, who travel back in time to save future turkeys from their Thanksgiving fate. Jimmy Hayward (Horton Hears a Who!) directs, and the voice cast also includes Amy Poehler, George Takei, Colm Meaney and Keith David. Look for it in theaters November 1st.

Disney’s Frozen comes to theaters on November 27th and tells the story of two sisters in the kingdom of Arendelle. Anna (Kristen Bell) wants to find Elsa (Idina Menzel), whose powers have created an eternal winter in the once summery city. Along the way, Anna teams up with Kristoff (Jonathan Groff), his trusty reindeer Sven, and a snowman named Olaf (Josh Gad).

Walking with Dinosaurs follows a young dinosaur as he grows up and becomes the head of his herd. Barry Cook (Arthur Christmas) and Neil Nightingale direct from a script by John Collee (Happy Feet) and Theodore Thomas (Walt & El Grupo). See it in 3D beginning December 20th.

A peek inside the Sin Bin

Billy Federighi makes his directorial debut with this comedy about Brian (Michael Seater) and his titular van, the Sin Bin, a place where his schoolmates get their first taste of sex while he’s left out in the cold. With the help of his friend Tony (Bo Burnham), maybe Brian will finally score with Suzie (Emily Meade). With a script by Christopher Storer, a dose of Wes Anderson’s aesthetic, and a supporting cast that includes Jeff Garlin, Gillian Jacobs, Tim Blake Nelson and Ben McKenzie, Adventures in the Sin Bin hits theaters October 18th.

A Case of You

In this romantic comedy, Justin Long stars as Sam, a young writer who falls for Evan Rachel Wood’s Birdie, the barista at his local coffee shop. Instead of trying to woo her as himself, Sam takes a cue from her online profile and tries to turn himself into her perfect guy. Not surprisingly, this ruse backfires. Kat Coiro (And While We Were Here) directs from a script by Long, his brother Christian Long, and Keir O’Donnell (who play’s Sam’s roommate), while the star-studded supporting cast includes Peter Dinklage, Vince Vaughn, Sam Rockwell, Brendan Fraser, and Busy Philipps. A Case of You comes to theaters, iTunes, and On Demand November 6th.

Gravity featurettes

Gravity hits 2D, 3D and IMAX theaters next Friday. The reviews have been great so far, but here are two featurettes to convince you to see the film in 3D and IMAX. This time, it might be worth spending the extra money.

Bummed about Foxcatcher moving. Worried about Need for Speed. I hope Aaron Paul can find some better projects, but I'm looking forward to Dom Hemingway.

  • FleshWorld

I can't wait to see Adventures in the Sin Bin. Also, probably the most interesting-sounding project of the week is Derek's Cianfrance's treatment of the founding of ESPN. Wow... Hopefully he has some edgy frame of reference there was certainly some scandal and intrigue to the true story. Perhaps something similar to The Social Network?

  • LamontRaymond

Lars von Trier needs to get over himself. He started out with a bang, and he's been treading water in a sea of retarted sexuality ever since David St. Hubbins style.

  • MarcDoyle

    Dom Hemingway looks fantastic.
