New trailers and updates for upcoming films

A final preview of War for the Planet of the Apes

After revealing his origins in Rise of the Planet of the Apes and exploring his struggle to keep the peace in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, the Apes franchise returns this summer with War for the Planet of the Apes, which finds Caesar fighting for the survival of his species against a group of humans led by Woody Harrelson’s Colonel. For this July 14 release, Matt Reeves returns to direct, and Andy Serkis and Judy Greer reprise their motion-capture roles as Caesar and Cornelia.

A look at some of this year's Cannes debuts

The first screening for Netflix’s controversial Cannes competition entry, Bong Joon Ho’s Okja, did not go off without a hitch, but critical opinion has been mostly positive for this odd combination of adventure fable and anti-capitalism satire. The June 28 release stars Seo-Hyun Ahn as Mija, a young girl who risks her life to protect her best friend—a massive animal named Okja. The supporting cast includes Tilda Swinton, Jake Gyllenhaal, Paul Dano, Shirley Henderson, and Giancarlo Esposito.

Here’s the first trailer for Heaven Knows What directors Josh and Benny Safdie’s Good Time, starring Robert Pattinson and playing in competition at Cannes this week. For more on the film, check out our Cannes Film Festival wrap-up article next weekend.

Blade of the Immortal is Takashi Miike’s 100th film. An adaptation of Hiroaki Samura’s manga series, the film is another violent offering from the director behind 13 Assassins.

The Mummy returns

Directed by Alex Kurtzman and starring Tom Cruise, Sofia Boutella, Annabelle Wallis, Jake Johnson, Courtney B. Vance, and Russell Crowe, The Mummy is the first film in Universal’s planned monsters franchise. The June 9 release finds Cruise in the role of a tomb raider who unleashes a powerful evil in the form of Boutella’s ancient princess.

Battle of the Sexes

Battle of the Sexes tells the true story of the 1973 tennis match between top-ranked Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) and Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell). Directed by Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton (Little Miss Sunshine, Ruby Sparks), the September 22 release features a supporting cast of Andrea Riseborough, Sarah Silverman, Bill Pullman, Alan Cumming, and Elisabeth Shue.

We bet The House has a new trailer

In The House, Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler play parents who have lost their daughter’s college fund, so they decide to open a casino in the basement of their neighbor’s (Jason Mantzoukas) house. This June 30 release is the feature directorial debut of Andrew J. Cohn, the writer of Neighbors and Neighbors 2 with his co-writer here, Brendan O’Brien.

The Glass Castle

Based on Jeannette Wall’s best-selling memoir, The Glass Castle chronicles the adventures of an eccentric family led by a dysfunctional father (Woody Harrelson) and the daughter (Brie Larson) who left to make a life of her own. The film reunites Larson with her Short Term 12 director, Destin Cretton. Coming to theaters August 11th, the film also stars Naomi Watts, Max Greenfield, and Sarah Snook.

Band Aid

Actress-writer-director Zoe Lister-Jones’ feature directing debut earned good reviews when it premiered at Sundance earlier this year. The film follows Anna (Zoe Lister-Jones) and Ben (Adam Pally) as they start a band to save their marriage. Coming to theaters June 2nd, Band Aid also stars Fred Armisen as Dave, their neighbor and drummer, plus Hannah Simone, Brooklyn Decker, Ravi Patel, and Retta.

Patti Cake$

Music video director Geremy Jasper’s debut feature stars Danielle Macdonald as Patricia “Killa P” Dombrowski, a bartender in New Jersey who hopes her rap skills can lead her to fame and fortune. Patti Cake$ earned mostly positive reviews when it premiered at Sundance earlier this year. Look for it in select theaters August 18th.

Home Again

Written and directed by Hallie Meyers-Shyer, daughter of Nancy Meyers (The Intern), Home Again stars Reese Witherspoon as a recently separated mother of two who agrees to let three aspiring filmmakers (Nat Wolff, Pico Alexander, Jon Rudnitsky) stay in her guest house. A new family springs from this temporary arrangement, but the unexpected arrival of her ex-husband (Martin Sheen) complicates matters. See how things work out in theaters September 8th.

Lost in Paris

Coming to theaters June 16th, Lost in Paris is the latest from filmmakers Dominique Abel and Fiona Gordon. The film follows Canadian librarian Fiona (Gordon) as she travels to Paris to visit her aunt Martha (Emmanuelle Riva). When she reaches Paris, she discovers that Martha has disappeared and is joined on her adventures by a irrepressible tramp (Abel).

Short takes

Coming to theaters July 28th, The Emoji Movie follows Gene (voiced by T.J. Miller), Hi-5 (James Corden) and Jailbreak (Anna Faris) as they try to save their world before it is deleted.

The Breadwinner tells the story of 12-year-old Parvana as she grows up under Taliban rule and puts herself in danger to provide for her family. Look for this animated film in theaters this fall.

City of Ghosts from documentary filmmaker Matthew Heineman (Cartel Land) follows members of the RBSS (Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently), activists who banded together when ISIS took over their hometown in 2014. See it in select theaters July 7th.
