Bourne is backThe Vegas strip takes a beating in this trailer for Matt Damon’s return as Jason Bourne. He has been off the grid for years. What brings him out of the shadows? We don’t know, but his old friend Nicky Parsons (Julia Stiles) is in Greece to help. Written by Christopher Rouse with Damon and director Paul Greengrass, this fifth installment in the franchise (the fourth for Damon and third for Greengrass) adds Tommy Lee Jones, Alicia Vikander, Vincent Cassel, and Riz Ahmed to the cast. Jason Bourne opens July 29th.

Sundance winner The Birth of a Nation gets a trailer
Winner of the U.S. Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and purchased by Fox Searchlight for the record-setting price of $17.5 million, The Birth of a Nation follows Nat Turner, a slave and preacher who becomes the leader of a rebellion in Southhampton County, Virginia in 1831. Produced, written, and directed by Nate Parker (who also stars), the film took seven years to make. But it looks ready to enter the awards-season fray with a prime October 7 release date.
The Founder
After turning in great work in Birdman and Spotlight, Michael Keaton hopes to keep his streak alive in The Founder. He plays Ray Kroc, the "founder" of McDonald’s. Written by Robert Siegel, the story follows Kroc as he wrestles control away from Mac and Dick McDonald (John Carroll Lynch and Nick Offerman), who established the original fast food burger operation in 1950s Southern California. Directed by John Lee Hancock (Saving Mr. Banks), the August 5 release also stars Laura Dern, B.J. Novak, Patrick Wilson, and Linda Cardellini.
Another Magnificent Seven
A remake of John Sturges' 1960 film, which itself was a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 epic The Seven Samurai, this latest version of The Magnificent Seven finds Antoine Fuqua directing Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D'Onofrio, Byung-Hun Lee, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, and Martin Sensmeier. Written by John Lee Hancock, Richard Wenk, and Nic Pizzolatto, the story finds the seven protecting a town from industrialist Bartholomew Bogue (Peter Sarsgaard) and his henchmen. The Magnificent Seven, also starring Haley Bennett, Matt Bomer, Cam Gigandet and Vinnie Jones, opens on September 23rd.
The Girl on the Train
In the October 7 release The Girl on the Train, an adaptation of Paula Hawkins’ novel, Emily Blunt stars as Rachel, an alcoholic still devastated by her divorce. She spends her daily commute fantasizing about the seemingly perfect couple who live in a house that her train passes every day. But when she sees something shocking happen there, she becomes entangled in a mystery for which she is not prepared. Directed by Tate Taylor (Get On Up) and with a cast that includes Haley Bennett, Luke Evans, Rebecca Ferguson, Laura Prepon, Edgar Ramírez, Allison Janney, Justin Theroux, and Lisa Kudrow, this could be the Gone Girl of 2016.
Independence Day: Resurgence
It has been 20 years since the events depicted in Independence Day, and the aliens have returned to Earth (though some never left). The world won’t have Will Smith’s Colonel Steven Hiller to defend them (news about his demise can be found here), but his son, played by Jesse Usher, is ready to lead the charge, and Jeff Goldblum’s David Levinson has been working with Earth Space Defense (ESD) to prepare (though from the looks of it, not very well) for another invasion. Also reprising their roles are Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox, and Brent Spiner. Joining the cast are Liam Hemsworth, Joey King, William Fichtner, Maika Monroe, and Sela Ward. Independence Day: Resurgence invades theaters on June 24, 2016.
The Infiltrator
Bryan Cranston plays Federal agent Robert "Bob" Mazur in this true story about the 1986 attempt to take down Pablo Escobar through his top lieutenant Roberto Alcaino (Benjamin Bratt). Mazur posed as a money-laundering businessman and teamed up with fellow agent Emir Abreu (John Leguizamo) and rookie agent Kathy Ertz (Diane Kruger), who posed as his fiancé. Directed by Brad Furman (The Lincoln Lawyer, Runner Runner) from a screenplay by Ellen Brown Furman based on Mazur’s own book, The Infiltrator comes to theaters July 15th.
Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates
Dirty Grandpa proved that even Aubrey Plaza cannot save every raunchy comedy starring Zac Efron. But she’s going to try again, with a little help from Anna Kendrick and Adam DeVine. In this comedy from Neighbors writers Andrew J. Cohen and Brendan O’Brien and director Jake Szymanski (7 Days in Hell), hard-partying brothers Mike and Dave (Devine and Efron) place an online ad to find dates for their sister’s wedding, only to find two women (Plaza and Kendrick) who party even harder than they do. Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates hits theaters July 8th.
Warcraft
Director Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code) takes on the daunting challenge of making a good movie based on a video game with Warcraft. Coming to theaters June 10th, this adaptation of the gigantic universe of World of Warcraft focuses on Travis Fimmel’s human, Anduin Lothar, and Toby Kebbell’s orc, Durotan. Paula Patton plays Garona, an important figure for both the Alliance and the Horde. Other cast members (some more recognizable than others) include Ben Foster, Rob Kazinsky, Dominic Cooper, Daniel Wu, Callan Mulvey, Ruth Negga, Ben Schnetzer, and Clancy Brown.
Hands of Stone
Edgar Ramirez stars as boxer Roberto Duran, and Robert De Niro plays trainer Ray Arcel, in Hands of Stone, an August 26 release. Written and directed by Jonathan Jakubowicz, the film tracks the life of the Panamanian fighter who made his boxing debut in 1968 as a 16-year-old and retired in 2002 at the age of 50. He is best known for beating Sugar Ray Leonard (Usher Raymond) in 1980 and then retiring in their rematch with the words “no mas.”
Equals
The latest from director Drake Doremus (Like Crazy, Breathe In) is a futuristic love story set in a world where emotions are genetically suppressed. Scripted by Nathan Parker (Moon), the film stars Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult as members of the society who begin to have feelings for each other. When Equals premiered in Venice last year, the film did not work for most critics, despite the leads’ acting chops. The July 15 release also stars Guy Pearce, Bel Powley, Kate Lyn Sheil, and Jacki Weaver.
Short takes
Woody Allen’s latest, Café Society, will open the Cannes Film Festival in a few weeks. Here’s an early trailer for the romantic comedy starring Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Steve Carell, Blake Lively, Parker Posey, Corey Stoll, and Paul Schneider.
De Palma, directed by Noah Baumbach (Mistress America) and Jake Paltrow (Young Ones), looks at the up and down career of filmmaker Brian De Palma (Scarface, The Untouchables, Passion). See it in select theaters June 10th.
The Do-Over is the second of Adam Sandler’s four-picture deal with Netflix. It will be available to stream on May 27th.
