Black Panther reveals himselfAfter making a strong impression in Captain America: Civil War, Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa/Black Panther gets his own movie with this February 16, 2018 release. Directed by Ryan Coogler (Creed, Fruitvale Station), Black Panther will introduce viewers to the world of Wakanda, the technologically advanced country where T’Challa faces challenges to his throne. Michael B. Jordan plays Erik Killmonger, one of the enemies Black Panther must face off against, and Lupita Nyong’o and Danai Gurira are members of the Milaje, a security force protecting king and country.

Flatliners gets a second life
In this first trailer for Niels Arden Oplev’s (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) remake of Joel Schumacher’s 1990 film starring Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, Oliver Platt and William Baldwin, it’s all fun and games as long as “Up the Beach” by Jane’s Addiction plays, but once it ends, all hell breaks loose. This September 29 release follows five medical students (Ellen Page, James Norton, Nina Dobrev, Diego Luna, and Kiersey Clemons) as they stop their hearts to see what the afterlife holds for them. Unfortunately, when they are brought back to life, their past sins return with them.
The Trip to Spain
Early reviews are split on whether The Trip to Spain is another hilarious excursion with stars Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon—or simply too much of a good thing. But if you liked The Trip and The Trip to Italy, chances are this third installment will not disappoint. Director Michael Winterbottom returns, as do Claire Keelan as Emma and Marta Barrio as Yolanda. Look for it in select theaters August 11th.
Daddy’s Home 2
Daddy’s Home entered the news this week when it received an endorsement from Sofia Coppola as a film she enjoys watching with her kids. Will they find Daddy’s Home 2 equally enjoyable? This sequel introduces Mel Gibson and John Lithgow as the fathers of returning characters played by Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell, and let’s just say the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Find it in theaters beginning November 10th.
Kathryn Bigelow heads to Detroit
With Detroit, director Kathryn Bigelow re-teams with her Zero Dark Thirty and The Hurt Locker writer, Mark Boal, to take on the riots that rocked Detroit in the summer of 1967. John Boyega leads an impressive cast for this August 4 release that also includes Jack Reynor, Will Poulter, Ben O'Toole, Hannah Murray, Anthony Mackie, Kaitlyn Dever, Jason Mitchell, and John Krasinski. Goodbye Christopher Robin
Coming to U.K. cinemas September 29th and the U.S on October 13th, Goodbye Christoper Robin chronicles the creation of Winnie the Pooh through author A.A. Milne’s relationship with his son, Christopher Robin (Will Tilston). Set after the First World War and directed by Simon Curtis (Woman in Gold), the film stars Domhnall Gleeson as Milne, Margot Robbie as his wife, Daphne, and Kelly Macdonald as Christopher’s nanny, Olive.
Another look at Netflix's Okja
The last trailer for Bong Joon Ho’s Okja focuses on the positive critical response the film received at its Cannes premiere. Coming to Netflix on June 28th, this combination of action-adventure fable and anti-capitalism satire stars An Seo Hyun as Mija, a young girl who risks her life to protect her best friend—a massive animal named Okja. The supporting cast includes Tilda Swinton (in two roles), Jake Gyllenhaal (in a divisive performance), Paul Dano, Shirley Henderson, and Giancarlo Esposito.
Brigsby Bear
Produced by The Lonely Island and co-written by and starring SNL’s Kyle Mooney, Brigsby Bear follows 25-year-old James (Mooney) as he copes with the sudden end of his favorite TV show, Brigsby Bear Adventures. Realizing he’s the only person who has seen the show, James sets out to finish the story himself. This July 28 release, featuring Mark Hamill, Claire Danes, and Greg Kinnear, received good reviews when it premiered at Sundance in January.
Kidnap
In Kidnap, Halle Berry plays a vengeful mother who will stop at nothing to get her son back. Directed by Luis Prieto (who helmed the 2012 Pusher remake), the film features an extended car chase involving a minivan and Berry screaming, “You took the wrong kid!” After being delayed multiple times, the film is now set to open on August 4th.
Home Again
Written and directed by Hallie Meyers-Shyer, daughter of Nancy Meyers (The Intern), Home Again stars Reese Witherspoon as a recently separated mother of two who agrees to let three aspiring filmmakers (Nat Wolff, Pico Alexander, Jon Rudnitsky) stay in her guest house. A new family springs from this temporary arrangement, but the unexpected arrival of her ex-husband (Martin Sheen) complicates matters. See how things work out in theaters beginning September 8th.
Ferdinand
Based on the classic children’s book by Munro Leaf and Robert Lawson, Ferdinand tells the story of a bull who would rather smell the flowers than fight. Directed by Carlos Saldanha, the animated film follows Ferdinand as he tries to return home after being mistaken for a dangerous beast. John Cena, Kate McKinnon, Gina Rodriguez, Daveed Diggs, Gabriel Iglesias, Bobby Cannavale, David Tennant, Anthony Anderson and others provide the voice talent for this December 15 release.
Short takes
Happy Death Day follows a college student (Jessica Rothe) as she re-lives the day of her murder and tries to figure out the killer’s identity. Look for it in theaters October 13th.
Coming to Netflix June 23rd with good early reviews, Brian Knappenberger’s documentary Nobody Speak: Trials of the Free Press looks at the impact of the trial between Hulk Hogan and Gawker Media.
In Shot Caller, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau plays a businessman who is thrown in jail for a DUI and transforms into a ruthless prison gangster. Look for it on DirecTV July 20th and in select theaters August 18th.
