The first of two new NBC shows debuting this fall is a variation on the Sliding Doors formula, with James Wolk starring as a man at a crossroads. You'll see not two but three different possible futures for him: one in which he is a rock musician, one a nurse, and one a police officer. Producer Matt Reeves (best known for directing films such as War for the Planet of the Apes) has been trying to get the series made since 2006 (!) and finally succeed this year, albeit for a different network (NBC rather than ABC). House veterans Garrett Lerner and Russel Friend wrote the pilot.

Foundation NEW Trailer Drama/Sci-fi Apple TV+
The famed sci-fi novel trilogy by Isaac Asimov is now an Apple original series from David S. Goyer. (Originally, Josh Friedman was also on board as co-showrunner and co-writer, though he left the project back in 2019.) Jared Harris (playing Hari Seldon, the genius mathematician who forecasts an end to the empire that rules the galaxy and seeks to minimize the duration of the following dark age) and Lee Pace (as Brother Day, the current emperor) star in the series, which unlike Asimov's books also appears to have room for a few female characters. Those Foundation books have never before been adapted to film or television in large part due to their immense scope, which spans centuries, and it is unclear how large a time period Goyer is planning to cover should the series progress to future seasons. Three episodes—including the opener directed by Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) in his TV debut—stream today, followed by seven additional weekly installments.

The Starling MOVIE Trailer Drama/Comedy Netflix
Also releasing in a few theaters on September 17, this $20 million Netflix acquisition stars Melissa McCarthy as a woman who turns to gardening as a form of therapy after a shocking tragedy, only to be thwarted by a bird who frequently attacks her. She then turns to a veterinarian (Kevin Kline) for help dealing with the starling. Timothy Olyphant and Chris O'Dowd also star. Don't expect another broad Melissa McCarthy comedy; this one is actually far more drama than comedy, comes from director Ted Melfi (Hidden Figures), and made its debut at a major film festival (TIFF). Nevertheless, critics mostly hated it when it actually screened in Toronto.

La Brea NEW Trailer First 5 minutes Drama NBC 9p
It's going to be a disaster right from the start, but that's at least semi-intentional. NBC's latest attempt at a serialized, sci-fi-ish drama series begins when a massive sinkhole opens up in the middle of Los Angeles, swallowing up people and even entire buildings. But some of those people survive the metaphor event and must learn how to fend for themselves in their new primeval, mysterious, underground world, while those still above the surface (and viewers like you) attempt to figure out exactly what happened. Natalie Zea, Jon Seda, Zyra Gorecki, Eoin Macken, Lily Santiago, Jack Martin, and Chiké Okonkwo star.

Former The Daily Show host Jon Stewart makes his return to television with a new weekly current affairs series for Apple TV+. Already renewed for a second season, The Problem appears to be formatted a bit like shows from Stewart's former colleagues John Oliver and Wyatt Cenac in that each episode will be devoted to a single big issue rather than the news of the week. Unlike Last Week Tonight, however, it won't just be Stewart talking: Each hour-long episode will feature conversations with people impacted by and working on the issue in question. A companion podcast will allow for further exploration of each topic.

Also opening in theaters on September 24, Netflix's latest big-money acquisition (for which it paid $30 million) comes from director Antoine Fuqua and screenwriter Nic Pizzolatto (True Detective), who adapt the Sundance-winning 2018 Danish drama of the same name (well, the same name but in Danish, which obviously is Den Skyldige as we all learned in grade school). Unfolding over a single day in a single location, their thriller stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a police officer who is demoted to work at a 911 call center. When he gets a call from a kidnapped woman, his morning turns out to be far more eventful than he anticipated.

Mia Hansen-Løve’s latest (which follows the critically acclaimed Things to Come and Eden, and her unreleased-in-the-U.S. Maya) was picked up by IFC this summer at Cannes, where the drama received mostly positive reviews from critics. Also opening in theaters today, Bergman Island offers a very personal portrait of a filmmaking couple (played by Vicky Krieps and Tim Roth) whose relationship dissolves while working on Fårö, Ingmar Bergman’s residence and inspiration for many of his films. The film has an additional meta aspect that involves Mia Wasikowska playing a filmmaker (yet another stand-in for Hansen-Løve) as well.

The adaptation comes from Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas, whose previous credits came mainly from Disney Channel and MTV shows.

  Cowboy Bebop NEW Drama/Sci-fi Netflix
Delayed a year not (necessarily) due to the pandemic but because of an on-set injury to its star, Netflix's live-action series adaptation of Cowboy Bebop finally makes its 10-episode debut. The original Cowboy Bebop was a Japanese-produced, jazz-inspired anime series from the late 1990s that later earned an American fanbase through airings on Adult Swim. This remake similarly attempts to blend science fiction and noir tropes as it depicts the adventures of a group of bounty hunters operating throughout the solar system. Some of those bounty hunters are played by John Cho (as Spike Spiegel), Mustafa Shakir (as Jet Black), and Daniella Pineda (as Faye Valentine), while Alex Hassell plays Vicious, part of the evil Syndicate. Yes, that jazzy soundtrack will return: Yoko Kanno, who scored the anime series, is back to put the bebop in the new series as well.

King Richard MOVIE Trailer Drama/Sports HBO Max
The latest Warner Bros. theatrical release to head to HBO Max on day one is theoretically a biopic about tennis greats Venus and Serena Williams. But, as you may have guessed from the title, the focus of the film is actually on their father/coach Richard Williams, played by Will Smith, since that is apparently more marketable. Still, the Williams sisters are producers on the film, and a November release date suggests that WB has some hope of positioning Richard for awards. Saniyya Sidney, Demi Singleton, Jon Bernthal, Tony Goldwyn, and Dylan McDermott also star for director Reinaldo Marcus Green (Joe Bell).

The film, which features a screenplay by Dear Even Hansen Tony winner Steven Levenson, will also open in theaters on November 12.
The Wheel of Time NEW Trailer Drama/Fantasy Prime Video
In its quest for its own Game of Thrones, Amazon isn't putting all of its (dragon) eggs in one basket. In addition to next year's Lord of the Rings series, another epic fantasy novel adaptation is headed to Prime Video this fall. Amazon has already committed to at least two seasons of The Wheel of Time, which adapts the best-selling book series by Robert Jordan (and, after his death, Brandon Sanderson) that spans 14 individual novels plus a prequel. There have been several prior attempts to bring the books to both TV and the big screen, but the massive scope of the series made those projects ultimately untenable. Amazon's version stars Rosamund Pike and comes from former Survivor contestant (and writer on Agents of SHIELD and Chuck) Rafe Judkins and like the books is set in a world where magic exists but only a select group of women are allowed to use it. (If you are keeping score at home, that makes two shows this year created by Survivor contestants—and the other one was pretty great.) The first three episodes stream today, followed by five additional weekly installments on Fridays. Season 2 has already begun filming, and Judkins has a total of eight seasons planned out if Amazon agrees to move forward.

Hawkeye NEW Trailer Drama Disney+
What if ... Disney+ went several months without a new live-action Marvel series? No need to think about such a dire scenario any longer; the next one is here. Hawkeye finds Jeremy Renner reprising the title role (which he has played in half a dozen Marvel films) of Clint Barton. But he's not the only one: Joining the MCU is Hailee Steinfeld as a young fan who trains with Barton to become the next Hawkeye. The series comes from Jonathan Igla, who is new to the MCU but has written and produced for shows ranging from Mad Men to Bridgerton, and the cast also includes Vera Farmiga, Florence Pugh, and newcomer Alaqua Cox, whose character (Maya Lopez/Echo) is being considered for a spinoff. Episodes will stream weekly on Wednesdays.
The Humans MOVIE Trailer Drama/Horror Showtime tbd
The rare film to get a simultaneous theatrical and Showtime release, The Humans is also the rare holiday movie to center on Thanksgiving rather than Christmas, though heartwarming, it's not. Playwright Stephen Karam makes his film directorial debut with an adaptation of his own Tony-winning one-act play (which was also a Pulitzer finalist) about three generations of a family that gather for Thanksgiving at a run-down Manhattan apartment. The dialogue-heavy film takes a dark turn as the day progresses—so much so that in some places The Humans is listed as a horror film. (But it's not entirely grim; some places also list it as a comedy.) Even when they couldn't pinpoint its genre, many critics enthusiastically praised Humans when it debuted at TIFF in September. Jayne Houdyshell reprises her Tony-winning role from the play and is joined in the film by the excellent cast of Richard Jenkins, Steven Yeun, June Squibb, Beanie Feldstein, and Amy Schumer.
  True Story MINISERIES Drama Netflix

The Beatles: Get Back MINISERIES Sneak peek Documentary/Music Disney+
Director Peter Jackson's highly anticipated Beatles documentary, originally expected to debut in theaters over the summer, is now a Disney+ miniseries. Unlike other recent theatrical-to-streaming moves, this one wasn't triggered by fears over audience sizes but rather a wealth of material—so much that the one-time feature film is now a three-part, six-hour event. Borrowing techniques he used for his WWI documentary They Shall Not Grow Old, the Lord of the Rings director has spent the better part of the past three years editing and restoring footage from over 60 hours of film shot by Michael Lindsay-Hogg during 1969 as the Beatles wrote and rehearsed 14 new songs that would eventually end up on the band's final albums, Abbey Road and Let It Be. (Lindsay-Hogg's 1970 film Let It Be also used a much smaller portion of the same footage.) A highlight of Jackson's miniseries is sure to be the Beatles' legendary final concert performed from the rooftop of their London headquarters, which will be shown in its entirety for the first time in history, but the expanded footage also allows the director to show how relations between the four band members at the time were not as acrimonius as widely believed. Only the first part of the series streams today; parts two and three will follow on Friday and Saturday.

Benedetta MOVIE Foreign/Drama ($) Rent
Also opening in a few theaters in LA and NY today, the latest from director Paul Verhoeven (Basic Instinct, Elle) was one of the most talked-about films at this year's Cannes, partially due to its quality (critics liked it but didn't love it) but mostly due to the fact that it's an often graphic film about a 17th century nun plagued by erotic visions who begins a steamy (and sacrilegious) affair with another nun. The adaptation of Judith C. Brown's nonfiction book Immodest Acts stars Virginie Efira, Charlotte Rampling, and Daphne Patakia.

It also plays in theaters beginning today.
Swan Song MOVIE Drama/Sci-fi Apple TV+

Don't Look Up MOVIE Trailer Comedy Netflix
Adam McKay's first feature film since 2018's Vice is a comedy about two minor astronomers (Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence) who believe they've made a startling discovery: A comet is about to collide with Earth. But now comes the hard part: convincing the world that they are right. Does Meryl Streep play the President of the United States? Why yes, she does. The huge ensemble also features Jonah Hill, Timothée Chalamet, Cate Blanchett, Ariana Grande, Tyler Perry, Gina Gershon, Chris Evans, Matthew Perry, Melanie Lynskey, Mark Rylance, Ron Perlman, and Kid Cudi. Don't Look Up will open in theaters on December 10 prior to today's streaming debut, just in case anyone is considering nominating Streep for an Oscar. (It never hurts to try.)
FRI / December 31
The Lost Daughter MOVIE Drama Netflix
Also opening in theaters on December 17 following a debut on the fall festival circuit, Maggie Gyllenhaal's directorial debut is an adaptation of the 2006 novel of the same name by Elena Ferrante (the Italian author best known for My Brilliant Friend). Olivia Colman stars as a woman whose solo summer seaside vacation turns sour when she becomes obsessed with another family whose activities trigger unhappy memories of her own past as a young mother. Gyllenhaal also wrote the script and enlisted a strong cast that also includes Dakota Johnson, Paul Mescal, Jessie Buckley, Ed Harris, and Peter Sarsgaard.

untitled but insanely expensive Lord of the Rings series NEW Drama/Fantasy Prime Video
What will likely be the most expensive TV series of all time—with a budget reportedly twice that for the entire LOTR film trilogy, though it does come with free two-day shipping—finally makes its debut after years of production. Filmed in New Zealand like Peter Jackson's movies, the series is not directly adapted from J.R.R. Tolkien's books but instead depicts a brand new story set in the same world (but taking place in the "Second Age," several millennia prior to the events of The Hobbit.) J.A. Bayona directs the first two episodes, while the remaining S1 episodes come from Wayne Che Yip and Charlotte Brandstrom. Those episodes will stream weekly rather than all at once, and a second season has already been ordered.
