Magnum P.I. NEW Trailer Drama CBS 9p
A reboot of the classic Hawaii-set detective series of the same name that ran from 1980-88 on CBS, this new, comma-free Magnum stars Jay Hernandez (Scandal, Suicide Squad) as the titular private investigator first made famous by Tom Selleck. (He still drives a red Ferrari convertible and loves the Detroit Tigers, but this time he's an Afghanistan War veteran.) One slight change: Higgins, the caretaker of the estate where Magnum lives in a guesthouse, is a woman, played by Perdita Weeks (Penny Dreadful). Zachary Knighton and Stephen Hill also star as the detective's pals, Rick and T.C., and Fast & Furious director Justin Lin is behind the camera for tonight's opener. The remake's creator, Peter Lenkov, is making a habit of rebooting old shows: he's also responsible for the new versions of Hawaii Five-0 and MacGyver.
Manifest NEW Trailer First 9 minutes Drama NBC 10p
Give NBC execs credit for resisting the urge to title this one Found. Like Lost but in reverse (and no, we don't mean that it has a terrible pilot but terrific finale), this serialized mystery centers on a plane that suddenly reappears after mysteriously disappearing without a trace five years earlier. The series follows the lives of many of the passengers upon their return home—which turns out to be a bit awkward, since no time has passed for any of the them, so that each one feels like they had a normal, mostly uneventful flight even as their friends and families have long ago given up hope and moved on. The series comes from Jeff Rake (The Tomorrow People, The Mysteries of Laura) and is produced by Robert Zemeckis and David Frankel (The Devil Wears Prada), with the latter also directing tonight's opener.

FBI NEW Trailer Drama CBS 9p
With a name that generic, this procedural can come from only one person: Dick Wolf, best known for a lengthy career on NBC with the Law & Order franchise and his current trilogy of Chicago shows. (Actually, it comes from two people: writer Craig Turk is a co-creator.) Missy Peregrym, Jeremy Sisto, and Sela Ward head the cast for the drama, which is set inside the Bureau's New York office. If that sounds familiar, you may recall that Wolf recently produced a reality/documentary show, Inside the FBI: New York, set in that very office.

NCIS: New Orleans Drama CBS 10p
New Amsterdam NEW Trailer Drama NBC 10p
All the recent critical praise lavished on reruns of ER on Hulu seems to have drawn the attention of NBC executives, who will now have two medical procedurals on the air this season. Joining the returning Chicago Med is this newcomer set at an elite medical center based on New York's real-life Bellevue, the oldest public hospital in the country. (The series is also inspired by Bellevue physician Eric Manheimer's memoir Twelve Patients, and Manheimer serves as a producer on the show.) Ryan Eggold (90210, The Blacklist) heads a cast that also includes Janet Montgomery and Tyler Labine.

A Million Little Things NEW Trailer Comedy ABC 10p
Looking a bit like ABC's answer to This Is Us (or, perhaps, The Big Chill), Things is the first drama series from comedy veteran D.J. Nash (Up All Night). The series follows a group of eight friends in Boston who receive a wake-up call when a member of their group dies unexpectedly. The ensemble includes Ron Livingston (Office Space), Romany Malco (Weeds), James Roday (Psych), Grace Park (Hawaii Five-0), Stéphanie Szostak (Satisfaction), Christina Moses (The Originals), David Giuntoli (Grimm), Christina Ochoa (Blood Drive), and Allison Miller (Go On).

Single Parents NEW Trailer Comedy ABC 9:30p
SNL's Taran Killam stars as just what the title says: a single man trying to raise his seven-year-old daughter. He seeks help managing his life by joining a support group for single parents, where he meets the likes of Leighton Meester and Brad Garrett. The ensemble comedy comes from New Girl creator Liz Meriwether and writer J.J. Philbin, another New Girl alumnus (and former SNL writer).

The Cool Kids NEW Comedy Fox 8:30p
Multi-camera sitcom The Cool Kids comes from the mind of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Charlie Day (along with writer Paul Fruchbom), and is produced by most of Day's Always Sunny co-stars. But don't let the title fool you: There is no one even remotely resembling a kid (or even a 20-something) in the cast. All of its stars (Vicki Lawrence, David Alan Grier, Leslie Jordan, and Martin Mull) are playing septuagenarians living in a retirement community—albeit one with as many cliques as a high school.

King Lear MOVIE Trailer Drama Prime Video
Shakespeare's play is shortened and re-set in an alternate version of present day London in this two-hour Amazon/BBC co-production directed by Richard Eyre (Notes on a Scandal). The excellent cast features Anthony Hopkins, Emma Thompson, Emily Watson, Florence Pugh, Jim Broadbent, and Tobias Menzies. The film received fairly good reviews from the UK press when it debuted there in May, with Hopkins receiving a lot of praise for his lead performance.

God Friended Me NEW Full 1st episode Drama CBS 8:30p ET / 8p PT
One of 14 programs that Greg Berlanti will have on the air in the 2018-19 season—shattering the record of 10 that he tied last year—is also the latest in a string of (usually short-lived) primetime shows that try to incorporate god and/or religion. Like many of those predecessors (including Living Biblically, which CBS just canceled), God Friended Me takes a somewhat lighthearted approach. It centers on an outspoken atheist (Brandon Micheal Hall of the recently canceled The Mayor) who is thrown for a loop when—and, yes, that title is literal—he gets a friend request from God on social media. Still skeptical, he starts investigating God's friend suggestions, who turn out to be people in need of assistance. Bryan Wynbrandt and Steven Lilien (both veterans of Gotham and Hawaii Five-0) created the series. The series moves to 8p beginning next Sunday.

Happy Together NEW Trailer Comedy CBS 8:30p
In this multi-camera sitcom, a settled, suburban, 30-something couple (New Girl's Damon Wayans, Jr. and Greek‘s Amber Stevens West) find their routine upended when a young musician—who is on the verge of fame in the pop world—moves in with them. The series comes from writers Tim McAuliffe (The Last Man on Earth) and Austen Earl (The Great Indoors) and is loosely inspired by the real-life experience of producer Ben Winston, who once shared a house with Harry Styles as he was beginning his music career. (Styles is also a credited producer on the series.) Felix Mallard, Victor Williams, and Chris Parnell also star.
The Neighborhood NEW Trailer Comedy CBS 8p
This fish-out-of-water comedy finds an extremely friendly Midwestern man (New Girl's Max Greenfield) relocating his family to a Los Angeles neighborhood that is both more diverse and less polite than he is accustomed to. Beth Behrs (2 Broke Girls) plays his wife, while Cedric the Entertainer is his opinionated new neighbor.

22 July MOVIE Trailer Drama/Thriller Netflix
Netflix has attracted an impressive group of directors for its growing lineup of original movies this fall. One is Paul Greengrass, who examines the 2011 mass shooting at a youth camp near Oslo, Norway that resulted in 77 deaths (and was previously addressed in the Norwegian film U-July 22). The new film examines the aftermath of the horrific events through three different lenses by focusing on the survivors, Norway's political leadership, and the attorneys involved in the case. The film will also get a one-week awards-qualifying theatrical run in a few theaters beginning today.
All American NEW Trailer Drama CW 9p
It's another Greg Berlanti-produced drama, and it's inspired by the life of NFL linebacker Spencer Paysinger. The popular politics podcast (hosted by former Obama administration staffers Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, Dan Pfeiffer, and Tommy Vietor) comes to HBO for a four-week run during election season. Each episode will be taped the same day it airs.
The Romanoffs NEW Trailer Drama Prime Video
Arriving a bit later than originally expected due to separate sexual harassment scandals involving its creator as well as original production studio The Weinstein Company, the first post-Mad Men series from Matthew Weiner is an eight-episode anthology series in the old-fashioned sense: each standalone episode features a completely different cast, setting, and story, with each one centering on a different present-day person who claims to be a descendant of the Russian dynasty that gives the show its title. The nature of the show allows for a pretty fantastic cast, with appearances from Isabelle Huppert, Aaron Eckhart, Kathryn Hahn, Diane Lane, Corey Stoll, Jack Huston, Paul Reiser, Janet Montgomery, Clea Duvall, Noah Wyle, Kerry Bishé, Ron Livingston, and Amanda Peet, as well as Mad Men veterans like John Slattery and Christina Hendricks. Two episodes stream today, with the remaining six arriving weekly on Fridays.
Shakespeare Uncovered Trailer Documentary PBS 9p
Titans NEW Trailer Drama/Sci-fi DC Universe
While the new paid streaming service from DC Comics (which launches 9/15) will eventually have at least a half-dozen scripted original series, only one will debut this fall. Based on the Teen Titans comics (mainly in their 1980s incarnation), Titans comes from producers Akiva Goldsman and (who else) Greg Berlanti. But the aim here for a darker, edgier, and more adult series (swearing!) than Berlanti's numerous CW shows. Brenton Thwaites stars. New episodes stream weekly.

This adaptation of the British comedy series about a group of old friends on a back-to-nature group holiday at a lackluster campsite comes from the team behind HBO's Girls, including creator Lena Dunham and producer Jenni Konner. Jennifer Garner (in her first regular TV role since Alias) and David Tennant lead a cast that also includes Juliette Lewis, Arturo Del Puerto, Brett Gelman, Ione Skye, and Bridget Everett.
Charmed NEW Trailer Drama CW 9p
It's a "feminist" reboot of the fantasy series that ran on the WB from 1998-2006. This Charmed once again centers on three sisters who are witches, though they are different characters (for one thing, their names all start with M instead of P, and one of them is a lesbian), and the setting has been moved from San Francisco to the fictional college town of Hilltowne. Melonie Diaz, Madeleine Mantock, and Sarah Jeffery star. The reboot, which is unrelated to previous attempts to reboot the series in 2013 and 2017, comes from Jennie Snyder Urman, (who previously created the short-lived CW series Emily Owens M.D.) along with her fellow Jane the Virgin writers Amy Rardin and Jessica O’Toole.

The Rookie NEW Trailer Drama ABC 10p
Filling the Castle void in ABC's fall lineup is this not entirely dissimilar crime procedural featuring the star of that long-running show, Nathan Fillion. Ordered straight to series without a pilot last October, The Rookie comes from one-time Castle showrunner Alexi Hawley (brother of Fargo's Noah Hawley) and stars Fillion as a "small-town guy" who gives up his life to move to Los Angeles and become the LAPD's oldest rookie cop. It's based on a true story, and it looks like it will share some of Castle's sense of humor, though it may be a bit more action-oriented. Afton Williamson (Banshee), Richard T. Jones (Wisdom of the Crowd), Eric Winter (Rosewood), and Melissa O’Neil (Dark Matter) also star.

Legacies NEW Trailer Drama CW 9p
It's a spinoff from The Originals, itself a spinoff from The Vampire Diaries (which, in turn, was based on a series of novels). Like The Originals (which just wrapped up its final season), Legacies comes from Julie Plec, and it centers on the next generation of supernatural beings, who are attending The Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted. Danielle Rose Russell reprises her role of Hope Mikaelson—who is the lead character here—while Matt Davis, who played Alaric Saltzman on both previous shows, also stars. (His character's twin daughters are also characters in the new series.)

(Both shows were developed by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa.) Miranda Otto, Lucy Davis, Bronson Pinchot, and Ross Lynch also star. Netflix has already renewed the show for a second season.

Shirkers MOVIE Trailer Documentary Netflix
Sandi Tan won a documentary directing award at Sundance this year chronicles the making of what would have been her narrative debut—a film shot guerrilla-style in Singapore in 1992 starring Tan as a teenage killer. But the footage was stolen by her American mentor on the film, Georges Cardona, and wasn't uncovered until 20 years later, inspiring Tan to investigate why Cardona stole the film and the effect it had on her life.

House of Cards Trailer Drama Netflix
Netflix's first original series draws to a close today with a delayed sixth season minus the original star, Kevin Spacey, who has been removed from the cast. The new season finds Robin Wright's Claire Underwood serving as president. Greg Kinnear and Diane Lane are the most notable new faces.
The Other Side of the Wind MOVIE Trailer Drama/Comedy Netflix
We'll never know what legendary director Orson Welles would have thought about his final film being a Netflix exclusive, but here it is (though it will also open in a few theaters today). Welles began production on the film in 1970 and continued to work on it for six years, but financial troubles eventually forced him to abandon the project, a sort of proto-mockumentary that traces the efforts of an aging, once-famous director (played by John Huston) to revive his career with a major new film. (Sound familiar?) You'll get to see glimpses of that film within the film as a whole, which was reportedly 96% complete when Welles abandoned it. Decades-long efforts by various people after Welles' death in 1985 to edit and score the film and wrangle the legal rights finally came to fruition, mainly thanks to producer Frank Marshall, who worked as production manager during the original shoot.
They'll Love Me When I'm Dead MOVIE Documentary Netflix

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs MOVIE Trailer Western Netflix
Originally intended to be the first Netflix television series from the Coen brothers, Buster Scruggs was retooled at the last minute into a (very long) movie, though it retains the anthology format of the series. The film collects six different stories set in the Old West that vary in tone (though many are comedic) and are tied together only by the presence of the title character, a "sharp-shooting songster" played by Tim Blake Nelson. Individual segments feature James Franco, Liam Neeson, Tom Waits, Zoe Kazan, Brendan Gleeson, and Tyne Daly, among others. The film will also play in at least a few theaters for the next week (beginning today) to qualify for year-end awards.
The Kominsky Method NEW Comedy Netflix
The latest series from producer Chuck Lorre (who previously developed the short-lived Disjointed for the streaming service) is a single-camera comedy starring Michael Douglas as a Hollywood acting coach. Alan Arkin co-stars as his longtime agent and friend, while Nancy Travis plays a divorcée who enrolls in his acting class. Lisa Edelstein will also have a recurring guest role.

A change of pace for Ben Stiller, who serves as director and producer, this eight-hour Showtime miniseries is based on a real-life event: the 2015 escape by two convicted murderers from an upstate New York prison with the assistance of a prison employee who was romantically involved with both convicts. Benicio del Toro, Patricia Arquette, and Paul Dano head a cast that also includes Bonnie Hunt and David Morse. The script comes from Ray Donovan vets Michael Tolkin and Brett Johnson.

My Brilliant Friend NEW Trailer Foreign/Drama HBO 9p
It's HBO's first non-English-language original series (though more are coming in 2019). This lavishly produced, Italian-language drama is adapted from Elena Ferrante's acclaimed best-selling novel about an elderly woman who chronicles six decades of her friendship/rivalry with another woman after the latter mysteriously disappears. Reviewers liked the series when it premiered at the Venice Film Festival in August, and three additional seasons (based on Ferrante's three follow-up novels) will be produced in Italy, though HBO hasn't yet officially committed to airing them. New episodes will air on both Sundays and Mondays (including another new episode tomorrow at 9p).

The Little Drummer Girl MINISERIES Drama AMC 9p
After The Night Manager scored impressive reviews and received a dozen Emmy nominations for AMC in 2016, it became inevitable that more John le Carré adaptations would follow. (Not that we're complaining.) Next up is The Little Drummer Girl, le Carré's 1983 novel about an Israeli spy who enlists an actress to help him track down a Palestinian terrorist moving through Europe, and once again there is some major talent involved. Oldboy and The Handmaiden director Park Chan-wook makes his TV debut (he directs the entire series) with a cast led by Florence Pugh, Alexander Skarsgard, and Michael Shannon. Set in the late 1970s, the six-hour miniseries will air across three consecutive nights.

Roma MOVIE Trailer Drama Netflix
This could be Netflix's best chance to finally crack the Oscar best picture field. Certainly, after an impressive fall festival debut, Roma stands as one of 2018's very best films. (It will get a theatrical release today, at least in a few theaters.) The first film from director Alfonso Cuarón since 2013's Gravity, Roma is a major change in both style and substance: It's a naturalistic, almost documentary-like tale of class and family centering on a housemaid for a fairly well-off family in Mexico City in the early 1970s (with some details drawn from the filmmaker's own life). The black-and-white, Spanish-language film is both intimate in its focus on the personal and also large in format, shot in 65mm by Cuarón himself. (Don't watch it on your iPad.)
