There's acting out and then there's acting out. The debut film from director Pascual Sisto centers on the titular 13-year-old boy (that would be John, not The Hole), played by Captain Fantastic's Charlie Shotwell, who discovers a hidden unfinished bunker near his house. Like any teenager would then do, he decides to drug his parents (Michael C. Hall, Jennifer Ehle) and older sister (Taissa Farmiga) and keep them captive inside the pit while he gets to enjoy the family home all to himself. The psychological thriller received mixed-to-positive reviews when it debuted at Sundance early this year, and it opens in theaters today as well.

What If...? NEW Trailer Animation/Drama/Sci-fi DIsney+
Yes, it's yet another Marvel series on Disney+, but this one's different: It's animated. It's also literally different. Based on the comic book series of the same name, the anthology series What If reimagines classic Marvel characters in hypothetical situations that depart from the stories you know from the MCU films. What if it were Peggy Carter who took the Super Soldier serum and became Captain America Britain? What if it were Steve Rogers who donned the Iron Man suit? What if T'Challa became Star Lord? These and other alternate realities will be explored across 10 episodes, streaming weekly. Jeffrey Wright voices Uatu The Watcher, who narrates the series, while MCU regulars Michael B. Jordan, the late Chadwick Boseman, Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Natalie Portman, Jeff Goldblum, Paul Rudd, Jeremy Renner, Sebastian Stan, Toby Jones, Hayley Atwell, Chris Evans, Michael Douglas, Samuel L. Jackson, Mark Ruffalo, Taika Waititi, and many more will reprise their film and TV roles (at least in voice form).

CODA MOVIE Trailer Drama Apple TV+
Streaming on Apple TV+ the same day it opens in theaters, CODA (short for Child of Deaf Adults) swept the top awards at the Sundance Film Festival early this year, where Apple acquired the film for a Sundance-record $25 million. (The last film to win both top Sundance awards from audiences and the festival jury? Minari, the previous year.) Director Sian Heder (Tallulah) also won an award at the fest for her crowd-pleasing remake of the 2014 French film La Famille Bélier that stars Emilia Jones as Ruby, the sole hearing member of a deaf Gloucester fishing family. As the family business comes under threat, she explores her love of singing despite the disapproval of her mother, played by Marlee Matlin.

Annette MOVIE Trailer Musical/Drama Prime Video
Streaming on Prime Video two weeks after opening in theaters (and a few months after its world premiere at Cannes, where reviews were mostly positive), Annette marks the English-language debut for veteran French director Leos Carax (Holy Motors). But that doesn't make it any less unconventional than a typical Carax film. In fact, this one's a full-on rock musical, with original songs by brothers Ron and Russell Mael of Sparks (they are having a busy year), who also came up with the story and wrote the screenplay. That often dark story centers on a married couple (Adam Driver, Marion Cotillard)—he's a stand-up comedian, she's an opera singer—whose lives change when their newborn daughter turns out to have an unexpected gift. It's probably best not to know too much going in, though do know that many critics compared Annette to the work of Charlie Kaufman.

The Chair NEW Trailer Comedy/Drama Netflix
For their first series since Game of Thrones (and their subsequent signing of an enormous contract with Netflix), the production team of David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have opted for something very different: a six-episode dramedy set within the English department of a fictional university. Killing Eve's Sandra Oh, playing the newly installed first female head of the department, heads a cast that also features Jay Duplass, Holland Taylor, Bob Balaban, David Morse, Nana Mensah, and Everly Carganilla. Actress Amanda Peet created the series (with Annie Julia-Wyman) and serves as showrunner—it's her debut in those roles—though she doesn't appear in the show.

Lauren (voiced by Lake Bell) has dedicated her life to sheltering them, but when she crosses paths with Amber, she begins to question her vision.

There, he assembles a rogue team of LGBTQ+ geniuses known as the Q-Force who finally win the support of the agency after a decade, but with one catch: they must add a new member (David Harbour), who is straight. Gary Cole, Laurie Metcalf, Patti Harrison, Matt Rogers, Wanda Sykes, and Gabe Liedman also star in the series, which was created by Liedman (a writer on Kroll Show, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Broad City, and PEN15).

Doogie Howser, M.D., the series that launched the career of a young Neil Patrick Harris in the early 1990s, is back for a new generation in reboot form. This time, Doogie is set in Hawai'i and the young prodigy who begins a medical career as a teenager is a girl, played by Peyton Elizabeth Lee (Andi Mack). Jason Scott Lee (Mulan) and Kathleen Rose Perkins (Episodes) play her parents, and—in the case of the latter—also her boss at the local hospital. The original series was co-created by David E. Y: The Last Man NEW Drama/Sci-fi Hulu
This long-in-the-works FX on Hulu original series is an adaptation of the Hugo Award-winning, post-apocalyptic Vertigo series by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra. Like the comics, the TV series is set in a world in which a cataclysmic event has wiped out every male on Earth (except one), leaving a planet inhabited by women. Diane Lane, Amber Tamblyn, Olivia Thirlby, Ashley Romans, and Marin Ireland star. It has been a bumpy journey from page to screen: The original showrunners, Michael Green and Aida Mashaka Croal, departed the production in 2019 over creative differences, and were eventually replaced by Eliza Clark (Animal Kingdom, Rubicon), while original last man portrayer Barry Keoghan left the series in early 2020 and was replaced by Ben Schnetzer (Warcraft). Three additional stars, Imogen Poots, Timothy Hutton, and Lashana Lynch, were also replaced last fall when filming finally commenced. All 10 episodes were directed by women. Two of those episodes stream today, followed by weekly single-episode installments.

Valorie Curry and Eddie Izzard also star.
The Harper House NEW Trailer Animation/Comedy Paramount+
Would you believe ... another adult animated comedy series? This one (the second for Paramount+) follows a female-led family that has recently fallen on hard times and has moved into a historic home in small-town Arkansas—but it's a bit of a fixer-upper.   The Premise NEW Comedy/Drama/Anthology Hulu
B.J. Novak's mysterious and experimental FX on Hulu episodic anthology series finally has a title—and a few details other than the fact that it is written, directed (in part), and hosted by the former co-star and writer on The Office. Said to tackle "the biggest questions of our modern era," The Premise will blend comedy and drama across five half-hour episodes, which will revolve around stories like a woman who becomes obsessed with an anonymous online comment, a billionaire who offers his childhood bully an unusual opportunity, and an embarrassing sex tape that captures a disputed police incident in the background and with it the chance to save a wrongfully arrested man—if the tape goes public. The impressive cast will feature Jon Bernthal, Amy Landecker, Beau Bridges, Ed Asner, Ben Platt, Jermaine Fowler, Daniel Dae Kim, Lucas Kedges, Kaitlyn Dever, O'Shea Jackson Jr., George Wallace, and more. The Nowhere Inn MOVIE Trailer Drama/Comedy/Music ($) Rent
Also opening in theaters today, this 2020 Sundance entry from director Bill Benz (making his feature debut after work on such TV comedies as Portlandia and Kroll Show) blends multiple genres into a sort of indie-rock meta-mockumentary. The setup of Nowhere Inn has musician Annie Clark, aka St. Vincent, hiring her (real-life) friend Carrie Brownstein of Sleater-Kinney and Portlandia fame to make a documentary about her tour. The through joke is that Clark is actually very boring when off-stage. At Sundance, critics generally liked the concept of the film but found it wearing a bit thin by the end of the movie.

Foundation NEW Trailer Drama/Sci-fi Apple TV+
The famed sci-fi novel trilogy by Isaac Asimov is now an Apple original series from David S. Goyer. (Originally, Josh Friedman was also on board as co-showrunner and co-writer, though he left the project back in 2019.) Jared Harris (playing Hari Seldon, the genius mathematician who forecasts an end to the empire that rules the galaxy and seeks to minimize the duration of the following dark age) and Lee Pace (as Brother Day, the current emperor) star in the series, which unlike Asimov's books also appears to have room for a few female characters. Those Foundation books have never before been adapted to film or television in large part due to their immense scope, which spans centuries, and it is unclear how large a time period Goyer is planning to cover should the series progress to future seasons. Three episodes—including the opener directed by Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) in his TV debut—stream today, followed by seven additional weekly installments.

Dune MOVIE Trailer Sci-fi/Adventure HBO Max
Can director Denis Villeneuve succeed where David Lynch could not? The director of Blade Runner 2049 and Arrival returns with his big-budget, highly-anticipated, and long-delayed (by covid) adaptation of Frank Herbert's sci-fi epic, which Lynch previously tried to wrestle into a feature film in 1984 to less than spactular (though not uninteresting) results. Timothée Chalamet takes over the role of Paul Atreides originated by Kyle MacLachlan, while Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Zendaya, Dave Bautista, Javier Bardem, Jason Momoa and Stellan Skarsgård also star. The long-delayed film will stream on HBO Max for one month beginning today (when it also opens in theaters), and a spinoff TV series called Dune: The Sisterhood will arrive on the same streaming service in the near future.

Famed serial killer lumberjack Dexter Morgan is back in a 10-episode revival of the Showtime drama series Dexter that concluded its original eight-season run in 2013. The new episodes are set a decade after the events of the much-criticized finale and on the opposite side of the country in the fictional upstate New York town of Iron Lake, where Michael C. Hall's title character is posing as a local shopkeeper (and, conveniently, dating the town's police chief, played by Julia Jones). Other new faces include Clancy Brown, Alano Miller, and Jamie Chung, while Dexter vets Jennifer Carpenter and John Lithgow will also appear in some form (despite their characters being long dead). King Richard MOVIE Trailer Drama/Sports HBO Max
The latest Warner Bros. theatrical release to head to HBO Max on day one is theoretically a biopic about tennis greats Venus and Serena Williams. But, as you may have guessed from the title, the focus of the film is actually on their father/coach Richard Williams, played by Will Smith, since that is apparently more marketable. Still, the Williams sisters are producers on the film, and a November release date suggests that WB has some hope of positioning Richard for awards. Saniyya Sidney, Demi Singleton, Jon Bernthal, Tony Goldwyn, and Dylan McDermott also star for director Reinaldo Marcus Green (Joe Bell).

  Hawkeye NEW Drama Disney+
What if ... Disney+ went several months without a new live-action Marvel series? No need to think about such a dire scenario any longer; the next one is here. Hawkeye finds Jeremy Renner reprising the title role (which he has played in half a dozen Marvel films) of Clint Barton. But he's not the only one: Joining the MCU is Hailee Steinfeld as a young fan who trains with Barton to become the next Hawkeye. The series comes from Jonathan Igla, who is new to the MCU but has written and produced for shows ranging from Mad Men to Bridgerton, and the cast also includes Vera Farmiga, Florence Pugh, and newcomer Alaqua Cox, whose character (Maya Lopez/Echo) is being considered for a spinoff. Episodes will stream weekly on Wednesdays.

The Beatles: Get Back MINISERIES Sneak peek Documentary/Music Disney+
Director Peter Jackson's highly anticipated Beatles documentary, originally expected to debut in theaters over the summer, is now a Disney+ miniseries. Unlike other recent theatrical-to-streaming moves, this one wasn't triggered by fears over audience sizes but rather a wealth of material—so much that the one-time feature film is now a three-part, six-hour event. Borrowing techniques he used for his WWI documentary They Shall Not Grow Old, the Lord of the Rings director has spent the better part of the past three years editing and restoring footage from over 60 hours of film shot by Michael Lindsay-Hogg during 1969 as the Beatles wrote and rehearsed 14 new songs that would eventually end up on the band's final albums, Abbey Road and Let It Be. (Lindsay-Hogg's 1970 film Let It Be also used a much smaller portion of the same footage.) A highlight of Jackson's miniseries is sure to be the Beatles' legendary final concert performed from the rooftop of their London headquarters, which will be shown in its entirety for the first time in history, but the expanded footage also allows the director to show how relations between the four band members at the time were not as acrimonius as widely believed. Only the first part of the series streams today; parts two and three will follow on Friday and Saturday.

Robin Robin SPECIAL Trailer Animation/Family Netflix
Netflix's new half-hour, musical, stop-motion-animated holiday special comes from Aardman Animations (of Chicken Run and Wallace and Gromit fame)—working with felt rather than their usual clay—and features the voices of Gillian Anderson and Richard E. Grant.

The Hot Zone: Anthrax MINISERIES Trailer Drama Nat Geo, tbd
Though the original Hot Zone miniseries was based on a single book (and a real-life incident), Nat Geo has turned it into an ongoing anthology series that will no longer have any connection to Richard Preston's best-seller. Instead, this second season is set amidst the mail-based anthrax attacks in the United States in the months following 9/11, and recounts the FBI's search for the suspect responsible. Tony Goldwyn, Daniel Dae Kim, Harry Hamlin (playing anchorman Tom Brokaw), and Dylan Baker star in the six-hour series, which will air across three consecutive nights.

untitled Lord of the Rings series NEW Drama/Fantasy Prime Video
What will likely be the most expensive TV series of all time—with a budget reportedly twice that for the entire LOTR film trilogy—finally makes its debut after years of production. Filmed in New Zealand like Peter Jackson's movies, the series is not directly adapted from J.R.R. Tolkien's books but instead depicts a brand new story set in the same world (but taking place in the "Second Age," several millennia prior to the events of The Hobbit.) J.A. Bayona directs the first two episodes, while the remaining S1 episodes come from Wayne Che Yip and Charlotte Brandstrom. Those episodes will stream weekly rather than all at once, and a second season has already been ordered.
