Plagued by delays, a ballooning production budget, and major controversy, HBO's six-episode, darkly comedic, music industry drama series from Euphoria's Sam Levinson and Grammy-winning pop star Abel Tesfaye (aka The Weeknd) finally arrives today after a Cannes premiere in May—a premiere that marked the series as one of the worst shows in HBO history. The Idol follows an up-and-coming pop star (Lily-Rose Depp) who suffers a nervous breakdown while on tour and then attempts to restart her career with the help of a mysterious nightclub owner (Tesfaye). The sprawling cast also features Troye Sivan, Dan Levy, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Eli Roth, Hari Nef, Suzanna Son, Jane Adams, Moses Sumney, Rachel Sennott, Elizabeth Berkley, TV on the Radio's Tunde Adebimpe, Blackpink's Jennie, and Hank Azaria, plus the late Anne Heche in her final TV performance. Original director Amy Seimetz was replaced toward the end of production—when the series underwent a drastic creative overhaul that also necessitated cast changes and lengthy reshoots—and Levinson now has a directing credit as well. A recent report in Rolling Stone—later challenged by HBO and the show's producers—detailed the chaotic production process and likened the revised series to "torture porn."

Rescheduled from January. A rare scripted newcomer from the recently downsized TNT—and it's an acquisition from the UK rather than an original production—this eight-hour series follows a secretive organization that has the ability to send the world back in time whenever the planet is faced with an existential threat, leaving only a handful of people to remember the events thus erased. Paapa Essiedu (I May Destroy You) stars alongside Tom Burke, Anjli Mohindra, and Caroline Quentin. Production on a second season is now underway in the UK, though it is unclear if TNT has already committed to carrying it.

Horror | Shudder | |
Ted Geoghegan’s third feature, following Mohawk and We Are Still Here is a horror film set in a single location—the parlor of a Brooklyn brownstone in 1945—where an improvised séance brings to life the ghosts who haunt the five military veterans gathered there. It's a bit more theatrical and dialogue-forward than the typical horror feature, but critics praised the film when it debuted at Sundance early this year.
The Crowded Room ![]() |
Drama | Apple TV+ | |
Originally ordered as a potential anthology series about people dealing with a variety of mental illnesses but (for now) just a single 10-episode miniseries, The Crowded Room is loosely inspired by Daniel Keyes' 1981 nonfiction book The Minds of Billy Milligan. That book chronicled the story of an Ohio man who was arrested for multiple crimes in the 1970s but became the first person in history to be acquitted for having what was then known as multiple personality disorder (and is now termed dissociative identify disorder). The series, which was originally intended to be more of a straight adaptation but eventually evolved into a new story that changes multiple details including the identity of the man (played by Tom Holland) and the location (now Manhattan), comes from Oscar-winner Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind) and also stars Amanda Seyfried, Emmy Rossum, and Jason Isaacs. Three episodes stream today.

The FX-produced but Hulu-exclusive series is a sequel to 1997's surprise hit movie of the same name. Over 25 years have passed since that Best Picture nominee arrived in theaters—though the subsequent decades have seen it adapted for the stage multiple times—and so the new series will pick up 25 years later to see what many of the film's characters have been up to in the ensuing years. Returning from the film (along with Oscar-winning screenwriter Simon Beaufoy) are stars Robert Carlyle, Mark Addy, Tom Wilkinson, Lesley Sharp, Hugo Speer, Paul Barber, Steve Huison, and Wim Snape, while newcomers include Miles Jupp and Paul Clayton. All eight episodes stream today.

The sixth season of Netflix's popular sci-fi-ish anthology series (which last aired in 2019) consists of five new episodes, all written by series creator Charlie Brooker. (That may seem short, but it's actually two episodes longer than the prior season.) Stars confirmed for the new season include Aaron Paul, Zazie Beetz, Salma Hayek, Michael Cera, Josh Hartnett, Annie Murphy, Kate Mara, Rob Delaney, and Paapa Essiedu. Two episodes will be set in the past—specifically 1979 and an alternate-history 1969—while several deal with stardom, including one episode in which an average woman is shocked to discover that a streaming service has adapted her life story into a new TV drama and that Salma Hayek is playing her.

Easily one of critics' favorite new shows of 2022—and one of TV's most stressful (but rewarding) comedies—the FX-produced (but Hulu-exclusive) series follows a one-time fine-dining chef (Golden Globe winner Jeremy Allen White) who takes over the family's Chicago sandwich shop after the death of his brother. This second season picks up following the events of last year's finale and thus finds the crew attempting to open a new higher-end restaurant—a goal that brings fresh obstacles. New faces this season include Molly Gordon (Booksmart) and guest star Bob Odenkirk. The entire 10-episode season will be available to stream today.

With his acclaimed feature film debut Sorry to Bother You, rapper turned director Boots Riley proved he had a knack for surreal dark comedy. His first TV series promises more of the same—and appears to be another winner, based on early impressions from the show's SXSW premiere in the spring. Amazon's absurdist coming-of-age series I'm a Virgo stars Jharrel Jerome (an Emmy winner for When They See Us) as a 19-year-old Black man living in Oakland. He also happens to be 13 feet tall, and his odyssey through life and love includes a meeting with his idol, a superhero named The Hero (Walton Goggins). Mike Epps, Carmen Ejogo, Brett Gray, Kara Young, Olivia Washington, and Allius Barnes also star. Riley directs all seven episodes, and they are all available to stream today.

Based on the scripted Gimlet Media podcast of the same name, Blumhouse's horror dramedy stars Justina Machado as a convict who gains her release after serving a 16-year prison sentence. She finds work in her old (and now gentrified) Washington Heights neighborhood as a masseuse in the basement of a friend's empanada shop, but things quickly take a turn for the worse—to the point where there may be a bit of cannibalism involved. The Sweeney Todd-inspired series comes (like both the podcast and the one-woman play, Empanada Loca, that inspired it) from Aaron Mark and also stars Alejandro Hernandez, Kita Updike, K. Todd Freeman, Jean Yoon, Cyndi Lauper, Judy Reyes, and Marc Maron. All eight episodes stream today.

There, he becomes entangled with the violent criminal known as The Oklahoma Wildman (Boyd Holbrook) as well as the latter's attorney (Aunjanue Ellis). City Primeval comes from Dave Andron and Michael Dinner, who both worked on the prior series, and the cast also features Vondie Curtis Hall, Marin ireland, and Norbert Leo Butz. Irish filmmaker Laura McGann dives into the world of freediving, a dangerous extreme sport (where blackouts are frequent and death is a possibility) that finds competitors striving to reach remarkable undersea depths with only the last breath of air held in their lungs (and no SCUBA gear). Her film, a collaboration between A24 and Netflix, focuses on two divers in particular: Italian champion Alessia Zecchini and her Irish safety diver (and romantic partner) Stephen Keenan as Zecchini prepares for an attempt at navigating an 85-foot-long tunnel located over 180 feet below the Red Sea. Reviewers praised the underwater photography but were less enthusiastic on the film as a whole when it was unveiled at Sundance in January.

The latest video game to get the TV series treatment is Twisted Metal, a nearly 30-year-old, Playstation-exclusive demolition derby franchise. The last new game in the series came out over a decade ago, which makes it a somewhat odd choice for an adaptation. That game was originally supposed to take place in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, and that turns out to be the setting for the TV series, which finds Anthony Mackie playing John Doe, a fast-talkiing amnesiac outsider given the promise of a better life, but only if he can successfully deliver a mysterious package. To do so, he'll need to evade a fleet of marauders—including Sweet Tooth (Will Arnett), a deranged killer clown driving an ice cream truck, the main element that appears to be borrowed directly from the games—but he'll have the help of an axe-wielding car thief (Stephanie Beatriz). Did we mention it's a comedy? Thomas Haden Church and wrestler Samoa Joe also star, while guests include Neve Campbell. The series comes from Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick along with Cobra Kai producer Michael Jonathan Smith, with the latter also serving as showrunner. Building on last season's finale—which jumped forward in time by one year and featured a cameo from Paul Rudd—the third season of Hulu's hit comedic mystery series indeed adds Rudd to the cast as a Broadway actor and star of the new play directed by Martin Short's Oliver. Director Zack Snyder's second straight Netflix film (following 2021's Army of the Dead) is a bigger-budget sci-fi epic that finds a peaceful colony at the edge of the galaxy threatened by invading forces. Enter the reluctant hero: A young woman with a mysterious past (Sofia Boutella) heads to nearby planets to recruit warriors to come to her colony's defense. Charlie Hunnam, Anthony Hopkins, Ray Fisher, Michiel Huisman, Djimon Hounsou, Corey Stoll, Cary Elwes, and Jena Malone also star. The story has its origins in a Star Wars feature that Snyder was developing over a decade ago, though the final product is less family friendly than the Lucasfilm franchise—and is even expected to get an R-rated cut in addition to a tamer version. Rebel Moon is also expected to be split in two parts, though it's not clear yet if both will arrive today or if part 2 will be pushed to next year. |
