With a rocking soundtrack, loads of content, plenty of fan service and some clever gelling of two disparate video game universes, Hyrule Warriors is easily my favourite game of 2014 so far.
It's one of the most thrilling titles I've played this year, at once an adoring shout-out to the games that dominated my childhood and an introduction to a series that—surprise!—I actually resonate with. It's not a game for everyone, but it was most certainly the game for me.

One of my fave games on the Wii U. For me, this was always going to be a sure winner due to the use of the Dynasty Warriros mechanics etc but with the use of the Zelda franchise has made this a very unique offering for those who get to play. For thoese not in the know, imagine Legends of Zelda as a hack n slash then you've got the idea of what to expect!
There are a lot of Zelda characters to play as (from the good side or the bad side) plenty of unlockable weapons, character upgrades etc and plenty of further gameplay via DLC. One of my favourite touches is the co-op play on all modes of the game (one uses the TV, the other plays on gamepad). My partner and I can play this into the late hours of night and generally such 'fighting' games are not her cup of tea! We have been slowly leveling up the characters and have about 4 above level 100. Its a great twist to need to upgrade all characters evenly to ensure certain levels are possible to complete where certain challenges are locked to say Link only (although player 2 may use whoever they wish)
Sure, the gameplay may get a bit repetitive and ultimately, its just about unlocking more stuff as you go **** we are still playing this game two years on and have found the game to have a very strong replay value to it. Worth a go!

Hyrule Warriors forms a beautiful tribute to the Zelda series. The joint effort between Tecmo Koei and Nintendo results in a very strong summation of both worlds and at the same time is able to meet the fan’s expectations.
Like another delicious mashup, the Cadbury Creme Egg, Hyrule Warriors is superficially dead simple, but for those willing to unwrap its foil lining and bite through the chocolate shell, there lies a wealth of cleverly designed gameplay mechanics, charming references to fan-favorite characters and locations and a whole lot of tasty, sugary goo.
You’ll have two distinct feelings after playing Hyrule Warriors. Yes, the fan service through the recognisable characters, weapons and environments are a Zelda-fanboy’s wet dream. Yes, there was a lot of content there. But what were you doing in those countless hours? Fighting, fighting, fighting. Hyrule Warriors offers little variation or depth, but is fantastic for a nostalgic trip down memory lane.
Character customization adds unique flavor to the simple combat, and the satisfying weapons, rewards, and story make it a fun alternative to the typically serious Zelda games. It’s just a shame you can’t share the action with a friend without significant slowdown.
Hyrule Warriors has brilliant Zelda fan-service, but is ruined by unimaginative combat and brain-dead enemies.
The combat was fun and the characters were all very different to use. My favourite character to use was either Gannon or Zant. Some of the missions did get a bit tedious as you are essentially just mashing buttons a lot of the time. The bosses were somewhat cool. A fun game but did not do much.

Having never played a Dynasty Warriors game before, this game was a fairly new experience for me, and one that left me pleasantly surprised. While it's not that great as far as Zelda games go, it's still pretty solid gameplaywise. The combat system flows really well, and it's fun to learn the respective moveset of each character, and how their movesets tie into the Zelda series. That being said, I don't recommend this game to anyone who hasn't played much Zelda, because the gameplay is repetitive enough that it probably wouldn't satisfy anyone but big Zelda fans. Also, for those looking for a good story, the story of Hyrule Warriors is a joke; nothing but a lame excuse to bring all the characters together. All in all, Hyrule Warriors is a worthwhile buy for Zelda and Dynasty Warriors fans, but not really for anyone else.

I honestly found Hyrule Warrior to be an excellent idea, but like EXTREMELY BADLY EXECUTED.
First of all, the animations are not top notch, (It's not that big of a deal, but it's still something).
Secondly, the unique interesting part of the game is the story, there's no post story and the "challenges" missions mode that you can find on the title screen are SOOOOOOO repetitive and annoying that you just don't want to play them.
Thirdly, the game is empty of content. Literally 1/5 of the content is locked behind DLC.
Fourthly, the amount of antagonists and bosses is, well, pitiful. There are also like 5 legions: Hylians, Monsters, Undeads and two other legions that I can't even remember. The legions are also REALLY unbalanced, to get items to upgrade your characters you need to beat and collect certain items from specific legions, notably the worst must be the Hylian legions being 80% of the game allied with you and 5% of the game against you forcing ou to replay VERY SPECIFIC levels.
Fifth, no custom matches, no multiplayer, nothing. It's really pure Dynasty Warrior without anything special to it.
Lastly, the story is good at first, but more you play the game, more nonsensical it becomes.
The unique up of this game is the gameplay, the game works as intended and the game can be fun as long as you play the story without having completed it. The music is excellent too.

Hyrule Warriors is one of the strangest Zelda spin-offs ever, and has very little right existing. Essentially it amounts to Dynasty Warriors with a Zelda skin, which is an interesting idea, but it doesn't fixe any of the problems with the very samey Dynasty Warriors combat. Despite many characters having different combos and special skills, there is no reason to learn them or ever use anything besides the standard attack. A few bosses and situations with tense time limits will force the player to get experimental with the combat, which in my opinion is where the extent of the combat shines through, and proves itself to be actually quite fleshed out, but due to the relatively easy nature of the game on the two easier difficulties, there is no reason to ever attempt to exploit the combat to your advantage. Even on the two harder difficulties, the AI is extremely lazy, and will barely force the player to use many of the systems involved in the combat, and as a result the game felt very surface-level to me. There is something to be said, however, for the ridiculous fun of slicing through hordes of enemies one after another. The characters never seem to take anything too seriously, which I like because it adds an element of cheesiness that this game uses to its advantage extremely well, through the monotone narration that I thought was hilarious, to the amazing rock remixes of classic Zelda songs. That's not to mention the amount of fan service there is. From references to key characters, to the menu icons, there's a lot of little details for Zelda fans to notice. Watching the Deku Tree crush a horde of Bokoblins to death is hilarious and something that no Zelda fan should go without. Yet in doing this, the game isolates non-Zelda fans. People who don't know much about the Zelda franchise or chronology won't nearly like this game as much as Zelda fans, and my problem with this game is that it relies too heavily on the 'Zelda' in its name for enjoyment. For fans of the series, this game could be a hilarious combination of everything they love with some simple, satisfying combat to back it up, but for people who don't care about the franchise, then this game is dumb fun for a few hours before they put it down and never pick it up again, so Hyrule Warriors is going to get a 4 out of 10.
