As a nintendo fan who has followed the Animal Crossing franchise for a while this is the best edition of the franchise. This game is packed with content especially after the 2.0 content and is just a constant joy to play.
Start from scratch on a deserted island, collect resources to help its growth, form a small community, progress to get an idyllic place we dream of and, when we think that there is nothing else on the horizon, millions of players will share with us their own vision of our own story. A different and deep game, something that is undoubtedly a sensation that lovers of video games should experience.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the premiere of the series on the Nintendo Switch and it makes the player feel right at home, whether newcomers or the more experienced ones. With an array of new elements and mechanics but keeping its formula well anchored in the series' conventions, New Horizons will delight its players thanks to a marvelous game environment and world development, and its hefty rewards, packing enough content to leave everyone growing attached and enveloped by its experience.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the best entry of the series so far, but it is not the ultimate Animal Crossing yet. There are some minor flaws, but nothing really noticeable. Its quality of life details, the daily routine of grabbing some fruit, chatting to your neighbors or looking for surprises, plus the very new mechanics are so delightful that we can only say good things about one of the most rewarding Nintendo experiences yet.
The series has managed to evolve without betraying the spirit of the previous parts: to spend peaceful days and do what we want, without pressure. Possibly, New Horizons is the breath of fresh air we needed.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is probably my favourite game of all time. Putting aside its timely release during a period where we were stuck inside, I cannot help but go back to my island regularly, even though it’s been 3 years since its release.
The level of customisation on your island is impeccable, and the attention to detail never fails to impress. From the little secrets and easter eggs suffused throughout the game, down to the UI where each individual UI element has a unique sound effect attached to it. Details like these are a testament to the love, hard work, and effort poured into the game, and for that alone I personally think it deserves a 10.
The visuals are an aesthetic feast. I mean, the creatures have TOE BEANS. The graphics, although adorably simplistic, are intricate and realistic when they need to be (see: furniture and fish/bugs/sea creatures). There are so many villagers, both cute and kitsch, and they are filled to the brim with personality and charm. That is, if you have villagers with different personality types on your island.
Probably one of the few shortcomings of the game would be the lack of depth of the dialogue. Villagers with similar personality types or hobbies may end up repeating dialogue/spewing similar rhetoric as each other. If you’re like me and you enjoy talking to the same villager over and over until they get sick of it, you’ve probably had them repeat themselves a couple of times, or repeat the same sentence, just with a different randomised noun. That aside, villagers are nonetheless very fun to talk to and observe around the island, and I can’t help but smile when I see their little toes when they sit down. When you emote at them, they emote back too and that might be one of the greatest gifts technology has given us. Smug and lazy villagers tend to be my favourite, as the former tends to be charming and friendly, while the latter tries to make everything about food (some of the dialogue is genuinely funny).
Another little gripe I have is that they’ve watered down the mean dialogue in the game. I wish New Horizons had the sass and attitude the older games had, but I understand this decision was probably made to make the game more family friendly.
Overall, this game deserves to be game of the millennium. 10/10 gameplay, 10/10 plot, 10/10 music, 10/10 characters. 10000/10 housing debt.
My favourite character is Kyle btw. KYLE IS THE BEST CHARACTER. Peace
The villagers feel so soulless. There is just nothing story-wise to do. A lot of content from older titles is just gone. It can feel like a cozy home sometimes, but I feel isolated on this island in the middle of nowhere.
