Some of the most fun moments from friends come from this game. The bugs didn't ruin the game, they made it more funny. Loved the game so much and played the whole thing with friends. I liked the part where the imposter was among us.
In my opinion its very good horror. It has VR support. Its not too little scary, but not too much. It has survival features, like sanity bar. There's a lot of levels, each one is unique.
Oftentimes I hear of games being criticised from afar for not having much relation to a franchise or idea, but simply wearing it's skin. When such games come around, you should always remember to focus less on that skin and more on what the game has to offer.
Escape the Backrooms is, simply put, a generic horror game wearing the skin of the backrooms, using it as inspiration while also explaining how the physical environment functions through it. Despite that, it really doesn't feel like this is a backrooms game; were you to take all the textures from this game and change all of them, you probably wouldn't even realise it was meant to be a backrooms game. Compare this to Enter the Backrooms, a game that attempts to truly recreate the endless madness that the backrooms is meant to be, or Within the Backrooms, a game that uses the original concept as a base, but then really puts its own spin on everything. Both of these other examples, were you to take all their textures and change them, would still feel like backrooms games in their own unique ways.
There's not exactly much more I feel the need to say. Beyond that, it's a pretty standard horror affair with a theme. It didn't do much to keep me playing, and I'd much rather go play other backrooms games.
Disclaimer! This review is written on early acess.
Currently the levels are very stale and not scary. If anything I'd live in these backrooms. Besides those complaints i find it refreshing and nice to play with randoms and friends. If the developer were to make the levels scarier I'd give it a higher score
(This review was written during the early access stages of the game, things can and will change, )
The good:
The graphics are very impressive.
Multiplayer is fun with friends.
Level 0,37 and ! are very well made.
The bad:
Game is very hard on multiplayer.
Procedural generation is not in the game despite being promised in his devlogs.
Excluding level 0,37 and !, the levels are made very poorly.
A lot of annoying and irritating mechanics.
The game just expects you to know what to do.
Lack of qol features,
The ugly:
The models look atrocious.
Game randomly crashes for no reason every ounce in a while.
The game is not worth 10 dollars. Yes, servers are expensive, but do you see the amount of views he gets on his videos? He already has more then enough money,
Level fun has the worst level design out of any video game I have played.
At the moment, do not buy this game. Maybe in a few updates or so it will get better, but right now it is not worth your money,
SummaryExplore the seemingly infinite expanse of eerily familiar levels in the backrooms based on the popular creepypasta lore. Each level features different ways to escape with danger along the way.
