Like the original BUILD-era game, it's a top-notch shooter. Torus really emulated the way Duke's action looked and felt back then, even including his ability to look up and down (a GBA shooter first!) and jump.

For the most part, the look of the game is very clean. Unlike "DOOM," which could be occasionally muddy and hard on the eyeballs, the levels in Advance tend to be bright and easy to maneuver.
  3. This game has tons of action, blasting away at alien scum, and won't get beaten in the course of a couple of hours. It's definitely one of the deeper ones out there.

Best FPS yet on GBA. [Oct 2002, p.94]
  5. Essentially, the GBA is not the place to look for if you want a quality FPS, but Duke Nukem Advance has been crafted with due care, which generates an extremely pleasurable gaming experience.

Less pixelization, better control, smoother animation, better art, and lots of aliens and pigs in uniform to turn into mounds of bloody pork. [Oct 2002, p.86]
  7. Those who have already experienced earlier versions of Duke Nukem will grow weary of this diluted version rather quickly.

It was the 6th FPS released for the system. Duke Nukem Advance brings all the attitude and fire power to the small screen in a richly detailed FPS. The game feautures 4 exotic locations taking you to Area 51, the Temple of Amun in Egypt, the streets of Sydney, Austrailia, and an alien ship orbiting earth. The game feauters 10 fun weapons from your mighty boot to a shrink ray. All of the classic enemies from the original Duke Nukem 3D are intact with a few welcome editions. This is not only the best FPS for Game Boy put, in my expert opinion the best game for Game Boy. This is definitely top-notch stuff! Expand

Fun to play, this Duke Nukem title is all about killing monsters, finding keys, flipping switches, that sort of stuff. Kinda like DOOM. This isn't just a port of assets from Duke Nukem 3D, it features a whole new campaign designed from the ground up for the GBA. With a wide array of levels spanning the globe and then some, featuring signature combat, all new secrets and engaging puzzles.

Controls are intuitive and accessible, making the most out of the limited inputs. Boss battles are great and there are plenty of weapons, some are even unique like the Shrink Ray and Freeze Thrower. You'll never feel too frustrated with the combat once you get the hang of things.

Textures, draw distance and frame rate go above and beyond for the native hardware, not to mention the destruction effects and explosions. Music is lacking in game but audio is crisp otherwise and features many of Dukes infamous one liners.

    Verdict.

I can recommend playing through this even in 2017, at least once, should you have the tolerance for it there is a fun campaign on offer. I'll still contend, that this and Doom 2 are timeless, stunning ports of their respective classics for the GBA (although Duke is more a new entry than port) - the only problem is, if you plan on blowing up the native image elsewhere than the GBA itself you might find them visually hard to acclimate to given the original resolution and intended dimensions.

With the exception of the toned down sexuality (no strippers littering the levels), everything you love and expect with old-school Duke Nukem games can be found here. It's funny, has great action, and awesome level design. It even controls wonderfully. I don't know what else to say other than it's a real Duke Nukem game for you GBA! It's incredibly impressive and I believe a must play. Expand

It is identicle to Doom in almost every single way. The thing that makes me notice Nukem is that there is more plot around it, there arent really cinemas but there are little text boxes which gives Nukem a little bit more of a plot. There is a little bit more strategy to the boss levels, for ex. you can use a crushing block to kill one of you bosses. There are some voice acting which i find cleaver. The graphics are decent, their not jaw dropping but they deffinetly dont suck. For some example i really like the gun that you are holding, they seem realistic. The monsters are a little cheap looking and their not exactly smart but thats alright. I also like the way the levels vary, you can go from egypt to sydney which adds some variety to the game. Good game! Expand
