Angry Birds Stella comes with a cast of new characters, each with unique abilities, to keep the original formula fresh.

Angry Birds Stella is a good title with solid gameplay and quality cartoon visuals. The problem is that the game is one in a long line of similar entries, and people have come to expect a lot out from the franchise. On its own, Stella is definitely a great pick up, but if you are getting sick of Angry Birds it won't do much to get you back into the series.

Angry Birds Stella doesn’t reinvent the Angry Birds wheel, but it’s more of the same with high production values and a focused theme.

Another entertaining new chapter for the Angry Birds franchise, which adds some neat ideas and new playable characters. The problem: we feel its free-to-play model is a little bit abusive.

It's nothing too original, but still fun for some short sessions. Still, we feel its free-to-play model a little bit abusive, something not everyone is going to enjoy.

Angry Birds Stella is fun and its cast is charming, but it’s not as if it delivers a wildly innovative experience. What’s here has been done before. And again.

Angry Birds Stella turns out to be a not entirely successful attempt by Rovio to bring the series to the glories of the early chapters. Despite the introduction of new mechanics, the gameplay remains the same we've seen five years ago.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Angry birds are quickly becoming to the apple family of systems what Mario is to Nintendo. The furious flock have quickly taken the app world by storm, costing each one of us countless hours of time flinging them at green pigs that have stolen their precious eggs. However, it has been a while since a true angry birds game has been released with free-to-play spin-offs trying out new idea after new idea. That's all set to change though with the release of angry birds Stella, which goes back to the classic angry birds style we all know and love, with Stella the pink bird introduced in 2013 as the main star. Fortunately, this game brings a lot more new content at launch than most of the main series hits.
Angry birds Stella takes place on Golden island, where Stella is taking a vacation, as well as it being the home for her 4 friends, an evil bird and a whole new hoard of pigs to battle. The story consists of her and friends chasing down Gale, the purple avian commander of the pigs because she has stolen a map that leads to the golden egg, a rare artefact that's located somewhere on golden island. Like other angry birds titles, the story can be ignored entirely and you won't miss anything but it does at least give you some idea on what's going on.
The graphics have taken a huge step in the right direction, taking inspiration from the angry birds minisodes that are viewable in practically every angry birds game. The birds and pigs show a lot more emotion than in previous games, the pigs react with laughs, taunts and looks of fear depending on the situation at hand, making your shots actually matter. However, the background never changes between worlds, either being a beach or a large canopy of trees, leaves and branches. While it's nice to look at, it does repetitive to look at.
There are also only a few tracks in the game. These work well to set the mood and feel for the game and make the game feel more complete. Overall, the game looks and feels like an angry birds game but has a different enough art style to make it stand out as a new game and not just another expansion. You can even unlock bows, hats and other accessories for the birds to wear after you collect enough stars, giving you incentive to go back to levels and try for the 3-star ranking. There are 130 levels in the game with more coming later on in free updates.
Angry birds Stella has tossed away the abilities of the previous birds in favour of new ones that feel fresh and exciting. Stella can bounce off walls and speed towards targets, Poppy can spin her way down obstacles, Luca can smash glass with a shriek, Willow uses a spin attack and Dahlia can teleport short distances to get into tight spots. Each of these abilities needs to be aimed instead of simply tapping like in previous games. This makes gameplay much more involving, making you have to think about the after effects of your shot. Angry birds Stella also allows you to use in-game coins to purchase extra birds for use in a level if you get stuck, which you can also buy with real money. Telepods, small accessories that provide items for angry birds games are also compatible with this game, which allow you to get extra shots for free. Given how cheap these things are, it may be worth spending a few bucks if you get bored planning out your moves and want to basically cheat your way through the game.

As always, every time you finish the level you get given anywhere from one to three stars, depending on how well you did. Every time you collect a certain number, you can unlock coins to use and bows, hats and other accessories for the birds to wear, giving you incentive to go back to levels and try for the 3-star ranking. However, angry birds Stella seems to be a little more keen to get you to go back as in later levels, you may not be able to use all of your birds until you have earned enough stars. This makes levels almost impossible until you have all your birds and forces you to backtrack repeatedly until you can finally toss all the avians that are available for that level. Thankfully, this doesn't really become a problem until the beach area, about 65 levels in.
If you get bored of the levels, there are also a few challenge levels that reappear every once in a while. These levels unlock special bonuses and coins every time you play, the reward decided by a spinning wheel. In these levels, you get a limited number of birds but you get a choice of three to launch each time you take a shot. You can also level up by completing these levels, getting more challenge spots and more types of pigs to fight against from the exploding pig that explodes when attacked a large, fatter pig that causes earthquakes if it falls. These allow for different strategies and techniques to be used, adding more Varity to the mix. The challenge levels make a good distraction overall if you're stuck on a level in the main game or just need some more coins to spend on extra birds for the campaign.

Angry birds Stella is a fresh take on the angry birds series that takes the best parts of the series and adds in new birds, fresh twists and more ways to play. The constant back tracking and micro-transactions are annoying but it's a minor setback when compared to the addictiveness of the game. If you've enjoyed angry birds games in the past, then this is more of the same with some new faces and game play changes. If you've never played one in your life, then angry birds Stella might as well be your first.

    Overall: 8/10
