Asphalt 9: Legends pushes once again the limits of smartphone hardware and mobile gaming, offering cutting edge graphics, a smart control system and a lot of contents to enjoy with. It’s free-to-play and albeit there are the hated in-game purchases, they are totally optional. If you like arcade racing on the go, this game is the way to go.

All told, Asphalt 9: Legends offers a lot to like both for devoted fans of the series — of which there are undoubtedly many, given its longevity — and for people simply looking for a new free-to-play game with outstanding production values. While we don’t want to get ahead of ourselves or put any pressure on Gameloft after they just released this one, you get the impression that this franchise will definitely see its tenth game, and probably many more beyond that too.

Asphalt 9: Legends is the best arcade racer on mobile. The game comes with incredible graphics, lots of cars and tracks, and a huge career.

Asphalt 9 offers controls for everyone, fun for everyone, and white-knuckle, cackling-with-laughter crashes for everyone.

Asphalt 9: Legends is the ultimate episode of a great series of arcade racing game for mobile devices, where gamers can challenge and win against the AI or other players on powerful vehicles, surrounded by amazing landscapes, beautiful graphical details and a cool soundtrack.

Asphalt 9: Legends is beautiful, bluffing speed and details, very casual and arcade, giving really want to play for a long. Freemium's mechanics are there, but the game is still playable without spending real money.

But be careful, it could be addictive.

Asphalt 9: Legends is the best of the series so far. While it may lean a little more toward the casual side of arcade racing, it's still a ton of fun and gorgeous, to boot.

In Asphalt 9, skill is a distant second to car upgrades, a situation that generates weary acceptance rather than excitement.

Right off the bat, I would like to say that this review is being conducted using the Steel Series Nimbus controller in Gamepad Manual mode. Trust me on this one, the Touchdrive mode is extremely boring, and will have you closing the app after five minutes. With that out of the way, Asphalt 9 is the newest game in the somehow still alive racing series. This game brings a handful of changes to the core Asphalt game play, some are welcome, most are not.

GAMEPLAY: It seems like the folks at Gameloft have decided that Asphalt 8’s multi-lap races are far too long, and therefore, all races are now one lap. This is a horrendous decision on the part of Gameloft. Although the races can now feel a bit more open, nobody asked for this, and surely, nobody wanted this. Gameloft is also heavily encouraging users to use a control scheme called “Touchdrive”. This control scheme practically plays the game for you, and sucks all the fun out of this game. Additionally, this game also has a gas system that actually prevents you from playing after a certain amount of games. This is unbelievable! And don’t even get me stated on this games multiplayer, which is biased towards people who have payed more for better cars. The long and the short of it is, half of this game is pay to win, and the other half is fun at times, but is mostly a dull mess of gameplay. I do however have to credit this game in many categories! First of all, the graphics are beautiful, better than nearly any other mobile game I’ve seen. Second, this game's soundtrack is delightful and perfectly fits the tone in which the game is going for. Third, car customization in this game is excellent, letting you choose tons of features about your car, even its color! Sadly, these factors alone can’t make up for all the categories in which this game is lacking.

VERDICT: If played right, there is some fun to be had from this game, just not enough to make this game worth anything. Even with its stunning graphics epic soundtrack, and great customization this game just isn’t worth my time.

I don't mind a free to play having purchasable options, but when there is a Virtual Gas system and everything is a Loot Box "Packs of Cards" it takes away from what could have been a really great game. On top of the Gas System, the races are so short often taking less than 45 seconds. That combined with the Gas System shows that the game is engineered to takes as much cash from you as possible.

If they offered a version for consoles with a $40 up front cost and no micro transactions I bet this game would be amazing.
