Once I’m actually playing, I have a ball with this, because it is, in a very real sense, a cultural phenomenon. Never has a game managed to get people to flock over to specific areas of town like birds to seed. People point to it being too simple as a game, but really the game bit is barely relevant. What is relevant is that this game has people out and about, socialising and exploring. There’s a group experience event going on with Pokemon Go, and it’s addictive to simply be part of the collective.

An amazing game. I would even dare to say that it is an amazing social experience. The idea of traveling, meeting new trainers and catch pokemons everywhere is simply too good to be true. Cannot wait to play it even more, I've never been so eager to go grocery shopping.

Pokemon GO is already the best thing from 2016. Although the game has some server issues, once these problems are resolved the hype will probably continue. Thanks to limitless possibilities in add ons of Pokemon and features.

It's not perfect, but it is special. Pokémon Go uses a set of simple but functional mechanics to encourage social play and actual exercise. You won't love it purely for the game (if battling with friends is introduced that may well change) but what the game inspires is absolutely part of its success. I've gone on walks with friends purely to catch Pokémon in the real world. My eight-year-old self would have exploded if you told him that would one day be a reality.

This game is a worldwide phenomenon, which says a great deal about how much the fans love Pokémon. The technical issues and the shallow gameplay should have already killed the app, but instead the geocaching and AR make this a social adventure that we will definitely be playing for a long time to come.

As a game, Pokémon GO is weak at it's best. But as a social phenomenon, it knows no limits. They make us believe that we must catch them all... But it is they who've captured us.

So we've got a game that I don't enjoy from any angle (which sucks), but it's also dominating the cultural conversation right now (which is great). I'm torn on this one, honestly! See, I don't recommend Pokémon Go the video game. But I can't get enough of Pokémon Go the cultural artifact. It's a Videodrome-esque obsession, and I'm very disappointed in how excited I am to play my part. Long live the new flesh.

I know many people will be dissappointed because some areas are emptier than others and there is in app purchases, but what do you expect from a free to play game? Its one of the most addicting and fun games i have played in a long time and going for a walk with friends is really fun. Pokemon go can be laggy at times and it will crash, but it doesnt happen that often and it uses quite a lot of battery, but these are just little things and i recommend this game to everyone. Expand

Sure certain mechanics are still not included (trading which seems like a key-core feature of Pokemon in general) and spoofers are at at all-time high. It's still to be noted of the first time catching and hatching new Pokemon is a fun experience as well as the newly introduced raid mechanics. With shiny and berry features being integrated as well as all the way up to Gen 3 Pokemon, version 0.91.2 has been more exciting than it's beginning. 7.4 out of 10 Expand

Pokemon Go is a shallow game riding on its Pokemon legacy. The hype is expected but in its current state I can't recommend the game to anyonePokemon Go is a shallow game riding on its Pokemon legacy. The hype is expected but in its current state I can't recommend the game to anyone even casual gamers.

In its effort to make the game accessible to everyone the game is well oversimplified: 1. catch pokemons by swiping the screen to throw pokeballs, 2. strengthen the pokemon by catching the same type of pokemon over and over again, 3. restock for more pokeballs at "pokestops" and 4. "battle" at gyms against AI controlled pokemon. 5.as an added extra you can walk to hatch eggs.

The first issue is if your favorite pokemon is not the common ones around your area then you probably wouldn't be able to use it in battle because of its low stats (point no. 2). This is apparent when I see almost all the gyms around my area being controlled by commonly found pokemons. Rarely can someone power up their starter pokemon unless it can be consistently found around their area.

Another mechanism of this game is as you level up the strength of the wild pokemon that you find also increases. This deters trainers from investing time and effort to train older pokemons. Why spend the resources to level a pokemon from 50 CP to 300 CP when the next pokemon one finds in the wild is 300 CP?

Finally, the gym mechanism doesn't work for casuals. Around my area the gyms are guarded by pokemons over 1000 CP. Casuals with few hundred CP pokemons would be obliterated trying to battle at gyms.

No battling wild Pokemon, no trading, no direct PVP. Gym battles are a joke.

Terrible spawn rates outside of cities.

As for technically, it's quite buggy and the servers are terrible.

As well with the overpriced pay to win in app purchases, it feels like this is a cash grab with very little thought into making a good game and more about how to make quick profits.

About the only things going for it is the Pokemon brand name, and the animations are mostly pretty well done.

At best it is a step counter with Pokémon in it or hopefully just an advertising gimmick for the upcoming actual game (see Sun & Moon).

Aside from catching Pokémon with Pokéballs it lacks all the essential mechanics of a Pokémon title including building a team, training up Pokémon, choosing skill sets, battling Pokémon, dueling with other trainers, puzzles, etc. Though Niantic can clearly make a complex augmented reality game (see Ingress) they have stripped away both the complexities of their earlier title and of the Pokémon titles, essentially just creating a Pokémon mini-game. They have taken a simple but massively popular game of rock/paper/scissors and turned it into a coin flipping contest designed to compel you to pay for micro-transactions. Add to all this that their servers hardly let you connect and this is equivalent to an early access beta release with a lot of work still to go for a viable product launch.

If you were looking for the next step in multi-player interactive gaming or Pokémon games (or both) this is not what you will find.

If anything due to the lack of planned updates, market-growth-first rollout plan, and inevitable end of playability when the weather gets worse this really seems like a stunt to just get people interested in Pokémon again.

This was a game I lived for when it first came out back in July. It seemed like an awesome game, so I figured why not play it? I was hooked instantly. I caught pokemon after pokemon and it was so much fun. Now the game has turned into rubbish. Niantic, you can go jump in a lake with this pile of crap. You made it so that YOU CANNOT EVEN PLAY THE GAME IN A CAR PERIOD as a passenger, and I cannot even do anything more than a brisk walk and the game will cease to function. All that is in my area is dumb common pokemon, or nothing at all. I will not recommend even my worst enemy play this pile of trash. I would highly recommend getting Pokemon Sun and Moon if you haven't done so already, its by far a much better game. Even when and if Generation 2 comes out, it won't be fun anymore because you cant even use the game anywhere. This game sucks and I am so upset that Niantic had to turn it into this.....this terrible excuse for a game. I really am flabbergasted as to why they'd do this, but something is telling me they want people to PAY instead of make it a free game. Goodbye Pokemon Go and good riddance. I am completely done with you. Expand
