    The storyline is excellent, and the voice-acting spot-on, but Tales of Phantasia is unbelievably let down by its free-to-play model and terrible controls.

    Worst of all, Tales of Phantasia deserves so much better. Fans mention its name in the same breath as legendary RPGs like Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI for a reason. But as long as the West only has this mobile mess as a modern reference, we'll never fully comprehend that reason.

    Tales of Phantasia's crass cash-in on nostalgia — via brutal gameplay tweaks and a heavy focus on in-app purchases — comes at the cost of its own magic and value. Keep your beloved memories intact and dodge this damaged port.

    Even sampling this version of Tales of Phantasia will only lead to the frustration of seeing that Namco could have made an excellent version of the game, but didn't. Thanks, but no thanks.
