Been on Metacritic for years but don't usually write many reviews. I feel the need to write for this one. First, the OST is AMAZING and builds up the vibe. The artstyle it's pretty unique actually reminds me a bit of Another World, and that's nice. The glitchy stuff might be a bit overused but you can turn it off.
This game is a homage to the speedrunning community, and I thought it wasn't for me since I'm no speedrunner - but when you beat a level in 1 minute, you realise you can do it in less than 1. Then you do 40. But you can do even better, if you think it through, and get better at it. And then, you get 20 or even less, and feel that speed runner blood flowing in your veins! Can't say I have felt this in a long while. Can only recall beating the target time on Facility in GoldenEye.
For the cons I'd mention that I don't think the demo caught the grasp of the game just right. At first it seems its going to be a "vertical run" game. The difficult shift from the tutorial to the levels it's a bit abrupt for most peeps. The character wears black as default and demo levels are dark, it shoulda been brighter tone for the demo (you can unlock colors / etc in the full v, it's great). Can't say I love her voice, it'smore about the tone, she seems depressed or unamused, and that's not what the gameplay represents, as it is
exhilarating - so I wish she was more lively, even though that world is bleak. Think that would be more interesting.
Overall, all it needs is a sale to attract more players. The developers deserve to be praised for this effort. Buy it!
Fast game makes my heart beat fast!
I really hope, that I can get one of these S Ranks one day, but watching others get those Times is still very satisfying! Especially when you download and watch the ghost of a world record highscore from the scoreboard
I still don't fully understand the story, but I can say: I like the way, that I'm confused! It sometimes feels like walking through a weird kind of Art Gallery with a lot of beautiful impressions and sounds around me.
Some parts of the soundtrack are stressful, which really fits the hard levels, and some parts are oddly relaxed, when you just vibe your way to the end without any pressure!
This game has a really in depth movement system, which is designed to perfection. You can use up to 3 abilities in each of the 64 levels to try to achieve the fastest times and compare them with other players' time on the online leaderboards. On top of that, the game has a level importer which you can use to import your own creations into the game and upload them onto the Steam Workshop. Overall it's just a banger game which I guarantee will hook you more than you expect.
How I became a Speedrunner
When I first saw this game, I thought it would be too hard for someone like me. But the game mechanics are very intuitive and you can actually play the game quite easily, if you know platformers in general. It comes with a lot of beautiful artworks and an outstanding soundtrack, which I enjoyed a lot, but I think those things are not even the best parts about Afterthought.
What makes this game special is the unique gameplay. If you want to dive deep into the mechanics, you can basically invest infinite time into the game and pull off the craziest stunts! God, it just feels so rewarding when you finally get that S time. You can even beat the developer ghosts, if you want to embarrass them. And there are a lot of bonus objectives and Skins for all the completionists out there. Although it does not seem like it, almost everything in the game is quite achieveable even for Normies like me. Except for the online highscores...
Personally the most interesting part about the highscore system is, that you can filter the scores by categories. Although I am pretty sure, that I will never get one of those world records for any level (those runs are just insane), I was still able to get records in categories like "Only Dash" or "No Skills".
I think what this game really taught me was how to Speedrun. It even turned me into some kind of Speedrunner at some point, which I think is a pretty cool experience.
SummaryLearn to finish and speedrun the levels with ease, while experimenting with different playstyles. Explore the movement system of Afterthought, which is easy to learn but extremely hard to master. As Black, you can delve into surreal and beautiful worlds.
