Age of Empires Definitive Edition - Gamescom 2017 Trailer
Feb 19, 2018The performance was solid throughout my testing, I had no issues with gameplay improvements and the graphics looked great. There were some pathfinding issues and units did enjoy clashing with one another, which made battle rather hectic, but the clunky controls and movement were among the things I loved most about the original.
Feb 19, 2018There’s clearly been plenty of love and attention given to the remastering of Age of Empires Definitive Edition, even if some of the less enjoyable elements of the original have also made it through the process unscathed. Twenty years later it still remains a hugely enjoyable RTS, and particularly thanks to its iconic soundtrack remains a joy to play, with hours disappearing as the eras pass you by.
Feb 26, 2018Age of Empires Definitive Edition manages to fulfill its function as a remaster. The graphics and the sounds are truly a delight, and there are some small playable improvements as well, but these are weighed down by the AI and a pathfinding system which still does not behave as well as it should.
Feb 19, 2018After hours spent in the world of Age of Empires - Definitive Edition, we still don't have the answer to the real question: why should we play this remake? Gameplay-wise, the genre has seen a lot of improvements over the years, and the developers weren't bold enough to give a fresh start to the original title. At the end of the day, this seems more and more like a wasted opportunity.

This game***Edit: After writing this review I realized they had pushed a patch last month that did reduce some of my original complaints***
This game was a mixed bag for me, in the end I've put quite a bit of time into replaying through the single player.
*New visuals and audio (music is great, and I love the building destruction).
*They added a button that makes villages auto reseed the farms and people can now pass over the farms.
*Villagers auto harvest resources after building a building that collects them (reduces the micromanagement).
*Expanded population limit!
*Added a narrator to the campaign.
*Pathfinding is now better than the original game’s (as of the May 2019 patch, although it is still lacking compared to modern FPS game AIs).
*The game now has global queues displayed to show what units are being built, you can click on them to go to the building training the unit.
*Game is still being patched.
*Pathfinding is still bad, if you place one of your units a bunch of you’re non-moving units they won’t move to let it through.
*Amount you can zoom in and out is limited by graphics detail, if you want to zoom out super far you need to have the graphics detail (it is called zoom detail) set to 1x. If you want full graphics detail your camera is forced rather close and I find this annoying, so I normally find myself playing at 2x detail instead of 4x which leads to it looking blurry at certain zoom levels.
*AI still isn’t great although the May 2019 patch has improved some of the really bad things, perhaps future updates will eventually make it really good.
*Modding takes you back to the dark ages where you have to go to a website to download the mods by hand.
All in all I’d only recommend getting this if you loved the original and want to play through it again or if you’ve never played the original before. Going back to the non-hd version is now (after the latest patch) something I can’t do.… Expand

You still got the same gameplay, same campaign and scenarios, and same mechanics. The supposed "Improved pathfinding" is a hit-or-miss because it literally does not work for half the time and you have to manually guide each unit. I'll give credit where its due though, and that is in the graphics enhancement and population increase. This means your empire will look even grander than before. In the end, this game deserves at least 6/10 IMHO… Expand

(but the thing is, I was able to play about a dozen games. Then the loading screen went crazy. The game-play was fine.)
The good thing is, Microsoft's live agent tried to troubleshoot the problem (to no avail) and then transferred me to billing.
I received a refund without any hassle. Just politely informed the live billing agent that the software did not work and I uninstalled the game, and I would like a refund for purchase number xxxxxxxx.… Expand

Only thing that got changed is the graphics and even there i would argue it was not much of an addition - it doesn't look much better (apart from the better resolution of course). Everything else is exactly the same - id say even worse in many cases. I honestly don't remember the movement of all the units being this bad and I think the original game was much more fluid.
On top of all that, you can only buy the game through the windows 10 store.
Even if they released it for free I wouldn't call it a success. I'm sad i paid money for this.… Expand
