    Agents of Mayhem stands mightily on its own. This is not just an open-world Overwatch. This is not just Saints Row with superheroes. This is a masterpiece that’s been waiting for 30 years to bust out from the collection of talent at Volition. For a number of reasons, it demands a place among the best of the best.

    If you’re looking for something to keep you busy and entertained, Agents of Mayhem brings it in spades. However, if you get bored of doing the same things over and over again, you might not get what you want from it.

    It's not an amazing game. It's not particularly innovative. I'd hazard that Saints Row IV is a better game overall. But I enjoyed this attempt by Volition to punch a new hole into its dance card. The studio wanted to try something a bit new and while Agents of Mayhem doesn't quite stick the landing, there's still a lot here to enjoy.

    It’s one of those ‘good game buried in here somewhere’ experiences. Tonally it’s all over the place, and its design may as well be from the dark ages at this point. But there’s an alternate universe in which the likeable, upgradeable Agents and gratifying gear-gating are instead married to interesting, varied missions and an atmospheric open-world. That is what it would have taken for Agents of Mayhem to shine, and the most bizarre thing about its actual execution is how deliberately Volition seem to have shot for mediocrity. This doesn’t feel like a game hampered by ineptitude, but instead by a misunderstanding - or plain indecision - as to who it’s actually intended for.

    WTF is wrong with some people? This game is pretty good. Sure, it is no masterpiece, but i found it pretty fun. And it is one of the most wellWTF is wrong with some people? And it is one of the most well optmized game releases i have seen in quite some time, i am playing on max settings with an FX-6300 and a R9 380. Seriously, this whole review industry is going downhill pretty fast, they overrated bleh games and underrate perfectly fine games.

    Ignore the haters, it seems the only one who actually played this game was Quarter to Three. If you like light hearted shooter-action rpg hybrids, get this game.

    where a group of heroes are assembled with their own hatred for the legion to take them down
    The game takes place in south korea and the story is told with animated cutscenes and tons of humor and charm…
    This is a bit of a 3rd person version of a hero shooter.. though completely single player
    you start out with 3 characters, and once youre set free in the open world youre able to go and recruit the other 9…
    The game handles the introductions and unlocking these characters perfectly…
    and rightfully so as recruiting them makes up a hefty chunk of this 22 hour long campaign
    To unlock a character you have to complete a mission with that character..
    each characters mission introduces them, gives them a back story and their reason for wanting to take down legion…
    and none of them feel throw away, every single character in this game feels fleshed out, both in their play style and their personality
    These missions introduce the characters weapon, their special attacks, and their mayhem attacks..
    They force the player not only to dip their toes in the water with each character, it forces them to prove they can succeed with that character as well
    And each is balanced in a way that you may love 2 things about them but hate one… or really love one thing but hate the other 2..
    This makes picking your favorite 3 so hard…
    And keeping in mind you need a variety of characters in your squad for different objectives missions may throw at you..
    Once you have your 3 favorite characters , its time to squad up and take the city for your own
    A squad consists of any 3 characters
    You can take these characters and clean up the town if youd like, taking over outposts so that you can unlock a regions side activites or claim currency terminals to increase you dollar per minute you earn back at your base
    these side activities aren’t really too interesting or fun…
    I don’t imagine many people will spend their time running around this tiny city doing them..
    and other than unlocking schematics for new cars theres not much incentive to do them anyway..
    speaking of cars this is how you will traverse unless you choose to jump and dash into the air, but the game makes it easy by letting you call a car instantly with the touch of the d pad
    but sadly there is no fast travel here, youll be driving a lot
    most of your time will be spent doing main missions and running through lairs or dungeons
    These lairs and dungeons are found in story as well as in the global conflict section of the game which is where you send out your unused members to go out and earn xp and scraps for gremlin tech which is basically a consumable attack
    These dungeons are where youll earn mods for your equipped characters
    The mission structure here though is practically identical throughout all 20 hours..
    heres the crazy thing though..
    The game stays fun throughout inspite of this..
    Im surprised how much I ultimately enjoyed agents of mayhem…
    while the open world is shallow, the level design is extremely repetitive, and a low health indication like a harsh vibration or blood/discoloration on the screen doesn’t exist..
    the heroes with their different moves, diolog, and personalities, the different villians that are fun to hate.. the overall writing in this game.. all of it keep this game fresh and fun throughout…
    if youre a fan of hero shooters in any way.. don’t miss out on this one

    Saints Row .. without the Saints .. or so it feels. Not that the Saints are such a powerful franchise that they can really carry a game ..Saints Row .. without the Saints .. or so it feels. Not that the Saints are such a powerful franchise that they can really carry a game .. especially when the humor is carried over .. but they add a certain something to a game.

    Agents of Mayhem is not "bad" in my opinion. It just is not exceptional either. It is a nice mission/task based .. game that plays in what feels like a very limited open world if that makes any sense. There seemed to be no tactical approach, no choice in style .. it is all just trigger happy, fast paced, ability driven combat. Kind of a very, very dumbed down Just Cause .. which in itself is a very, very dumbed down Farcry or so.

    The main factor is .. is it fun? Well .. kind of. In short bursts .. and quite limited. Considering the hardware hunger of the game itself .. its content and presentation is lacking though. While i do like the visual style a LOT .. I have seen bigger games similar to that (like Borderlands) .. needing a lot less hardware to run.

    Whats left is what i can only describe as a perfectly average game. To me, not a misunderstood jewel or utter trash .. just a decent game that wont stick in memory for too long .. well, unless Volition does something amazing with the idea. (after all, the first Saints Row was rather dull either...)

Is it fun to play? Yes. Is it repetitive? Yes. Should you buy it? If you like doing the same things over and over and over to acquire XP so you can unlock fun new ways to do those same things over and over, then yes. Wait for a deep discount, though ($10 or less).
    Total size on my hard drive: 52GB (base game)

    + Excellent character design. Each plays differently, and has unique skills.
    + Good cast of agents. Ever wanted to wreak havoc as a furious German football fan? Or as an ice giant, complete with ice-ray-gun? Plenty of variety, and each has their own series of short side-quests to provide some back-story.
    + Stylized comics function in place of cutscenes. Works well, gives the narrative a unique feel.
    + Cars handle well. One of the few games where completing the driving activities is a genuine pleasure (even with a keyboard & mouse).
    + Good voice-acting.
    + Unlimited ammo.
    + Fifteen difficulty levels. Going out with a less-experienced squad? Set the difficulty to Level 3 or 6. Taking your best crew? Raise the difficulty to 9 or 12. Agents that are recruited later in the game never feel left behind.
    + Rebindable controls.

    +/- Deliberate B-movie-style story that is occasionally funny and progresses at a good pace. Best enjoyed as a series of small tales rather than one over-arching adventure. Lacks a main character to anchor the story, which makes it feel random and sometimes pointless. Main villain is a cardboard stereotype.
    +/- There has been quite a bit of gossip about SJW stuff in Agents of Mayhem. It’s there. What I can’t decide is if its depiction is genuine or mocking. Several characters embark on an enthusiastic tirade (that spans multiple missions) that seeks to elevate and support certain characters. The rhetoric is a direct copy of several progressive liberal talking points – but then I realized that the character making the bulk of these pronouncements was Agent Hollywood. HOLLYWOOD. Joke or serious?

    - No multiplayer of any sort. The roster of agents and arcade activities in the open world scream “co-op mode!” (rather like in the Saints Row games). But nope.
    - Graphics disappoint. Textures look low-res (even maxed), smoke looks odd, and jaggy edges are everywhere – even with both forms of in-game anti-aliasing enabled (which blurs the image to an absurd degree).
    - Performance is bad, with frame-drops everywhere. I suspect this is due to the non-adjustable draw distance (Batman: Arkham Knight also had this issue). The game is demanding to run even on lower settings. At 1080p Medium, I saw frame-dips to 27fps on my RX 470, though most of the time frame-rate was between 50-65fps.
    - No aerial vehicles.
    - No way to easily scale buildings. All platforming challenges.
    - All the leaps and acrobatics, yet Agent Yeti is the only character with a ground-pound? Missed opportunity.
    - No loadout customization. Hollywood will always carry his assault rifle, Fortune her dual pistols.
    - No visual customization (aside from the included and DLC skins) – of neither characters nor cars.
    - Only possible to have one profile. Want to start a new playthrough? The only option is to completely delete your old saves (there is an option to do this in the main menu).
    - Checkpoint saving only. Returning to the mothership saves automatically, so it’s not quite as restrictive as it sounds, but still annoying.
    - “Final boss” is fighting all the previous bosses in pairs – while fighting the arch-villain for a round in between them.
    - Key missions revolve around entering enemy “lairs,” getting some intel or gear, then leaving. There was an opportunity to craft futuristic fps-dungeon-crawler hybrid levels, but the effort falls apart because the same “lair” level is re-used over and over (at least 25 times, and I didn’t even complete all of the lairs).

    Agents of Mayhem feels like Volition was pressured with some major budget restraints in development. Either that, or this game is simply the product of a cheap, lazy effort. I don’t want to think either is true, but given the lack of interesting things to do, and the constantly re-used assets, I’m left with only those choices. The final boss battle (whose absurdity is only equaled by the trite over-acting of the vllain himself) leaves a horrible final impression of what had been a bland, average experience. Sandbox collectible-hunters will love it for a while, then realize that ANY of the Saints Row games offer far more appealing and varied content, and uninstall Agents of Mayhem. RIP Volition.

Game play was very glitchy throughout my hours of playing and never improved no matter the setting downgrades. Shiny outer layer with no real content once you get to the core. Disappointing.
