  • Summary: Airplane Mode delivers all the thrills of a real-time, six-hour commercial airline flight—in Coach. At least you've got a window seat. Buckle up.

Airplane Mode is the very definition of “you knew what you were getting yourself into.” It simulates a very mundane experience and captures the essence of commercial flight quite well. There might even be some benefit when applied in cognitive behavioral therapy to help people get over their fear of airplanes. As I stated before, I’m someone who loves flying because I’m allowed to unrepentantly waste time, but this isn’t going to be for everyone. I genuinely loved Airplane Mode and think it’s an art piece worth playing, and as long as you really love flying and have two to five consecutive hours to spare, it may be your complimentary cup of soda water.

Airplane Mode is everything you’d expect from a well-crafted flight simulator where you’re not in control: Boring, hopeless, and a dangerous invitation into the depths of your own unhinged psyche brought on by a high altitude prison that you paid to be incarcerated in. It’s almost the end of the year, and I think I’ve just found the winner of the best horror game of 2020.

In a different year, Airplane Mode would be a nothing more than a nice joke, a strange experiment forgotten in a couple of days. In this strange 2020, AMC’s first game is instead a sort of relief from the lockdown we are living in. If you miss being stuck in an uncomfortable chair, bored to death for hours, this is the game for you.

If you’re really desperate to get inside a virtual aircraft and experience passenger flight again, I’m not going to stop you. But even with Bacronym accurately depicting what happens on any given flight, the appeal is going to be limited. I’m really hoping that additional content is coming for this game. Mostly because this is a passing curiosity at best, and a nose-pickingly boring experience at worst. Wait for a sale if it piques your interest, but avoid it otherwise.

As is, Airplane Mode doesn’t make it off the runway. I’d rather fly Spirit.

Airplane Mode is, at its core, a simulation game - but it's a simulation game of a task that isn't enjoyable. What it is attempting to do, it does flawlessly. Overall the game itself is just not interesting or diverse enough to recommend to anyone in a serious manner. Now, if someone just misses the feeling of being stuck on a plane with not much to do for hours, then this is absolutely the game for them - but it's hard to imagine that won't be an extremely niche crowd for Airplane Mode to resonate with.

This game is absolutely not fun, the only appeal to this game is if you want to go abroad but don’t care about the beaches or the actual holiday part.
