While I've talked extensively about the things that didn't quite do it for me, I will say this: if you enjoyed the first game, or if you're a diehard fan of the web series or the movie, you will more than likely appreciate this sequel. For everyone else, including those like me with only a passing interest in the web series, it's a very hit-or-miss experience. If you enjoy potty humor and language filled with more “fucks” and “shits” than you can shake a stick at, then Angry Video Game Nerd II is definitely for you. If not, then I might suggest looking elsewhere to get your platforming fix, because while the actual gameplay is decent once all the humor has been removed from the equation, it's still not the greatest.
I found this game to be a lot more fun that the first one. Less death blocks made it more enjoyable and the Super Mario bros 3 style map is neat. Awesome Music
Angry Video Game Nerd Adventures II: ASSimilation (just rolls right off your tongue) is not only a HUGE! improvement from the first game, but also one of the best retro-style games i've ever played.
STORY: The story, like always, is very ridiculous and for a game like this it fits perfectly. It was a peaceful and normal day in the world, when suddenly a giant beam from outer space transforms the whole world into a ***** game and it's up to the nerd to save the world!!, however it won't be easy since the Nostalgia Critic also wants to be the hero and he has scattered all the nerds stuff through out all the levels and it's up to the Nerd to fix this ****load of ****.
PRESENTATION: The first thing you'll notice right away is the game's incredible graphics improvement, now there are little effects all over the place, like little blurs on the side of the screen, lighting effects and a much greater color pallet. On top of that we also get (again) and amazing and kick-*** soundtrack that fits with every level and it actually feels like an improvement from the first game. Also, the game is now much more fluid that the first game and this is no more apparent than in the nerds animation.
The presentation is a great improvement over its predecessor and it's definitely one of the best things about the game.
GAMEPLAY: AVGN Adventures 2 brings very important changes that make the original game look obsolete.
First there's the most obvious one, the wall jump from Megaman X. This thing is amazing, it controls beautifully and the game makes very clever challenges around it and if you want to beat this game, you will have to become the master of parkour.
The second change is that you can now actually swim, it's only used in 1 world, but it provides new possibilities for level design and challenges that the first game couldn't do.
The third improvement is that well, remember when i said that the Nostalgia Critic hide all the Nerd's stuff all around the levels, well this "stuff" are actual weapon and armor upgrades which include:
The glove of power (or the Power Glove): this allows the nerd to eliminate enemies faster with a punch and that same punch can be used to break certain walls to find 1-ups, or beers (which ones again function like your lives and health bar respectively) or...
The Turbo Pad (or the NES Turbo controller): this allows the nerd to charge his projectile.
Then we have the Cape (or Power Pad): It allows the nerd to glide.
Then there's the Uber Scope (or the Super Scope): Which...,makes your proyectiles stronger?...i don't know i personally didn't feel a difference.
The final upgrade on our list is the Swear'N'Scout (or The Konami Laser Scope): This allows the nerd to see and walk through invisible blocks and find hidden lives and beers, that's nice.
Oh and the sub-weapons are still here, through the Glitch Gremlin and Mechadeadcrist are gone now :(, but hey now we get the more useful rocks and another that refills your beers.
Each upgrade is hidden through out one of the 3 levels of the 5 world, oh wait that's right i didn't mentioned it!, there's actually a world map now with a total of 22 levels to complete.
And speaking of the ****, this is some of the most fun levels i have played in a while. Each level does something new and that "new thing" perfectly matches with the world's theme, plus the level design is a lot stronger this time, with less death blocks and a more fair challenge, plus every level aside from the upgrades also has a N-E-R-D words that you will have to find in order to get the good ending and an ****! that's right, this game also has different endings.
Also now every level doesn't have a boss at the end, but rather the bosses of this game their own stage at the end of each world, which i feel like it was a change for the better, since in the last game you will very rarely get to a boss with more than 10 lives, so this time they give more chances ****, this bosses are some of the most creative, difficult and fun bosses i have ever defeated, each one has a specific pattern and strategy to defeat. I won't go in much detail, but i'll live it at this: Vampire-Werewolf-Ghost-Knight.
Every time you beat a level the game will refill your lives so you don't have to get a Game Over to do that and i mean c'mon they pretty much fix almost everything wrong with the last game and i say almost, because i still have some nitpicks: first, it would be nice to have a hold-down option to not have to hammer the shoot button and it is a little disappointing that they removed the multiple character system (but i feel like the upgrade system makes up-for it).
And that's pretty much it, aside from the nitpicks this is a really awesome game that anyone should play, it may not be a very long game (i beat it in 5:30hrs), but the game kicks so much *** that it's just worth it. Great graphics, music, level design, bosses, upgrades, all of these things makes a 10/10 game.
I love that game!! It's challenging, but there is a lot of checkpoints and you get a lot of lives to try again! It dosen't stop the awesome soundtrack from playing if you do perish, which you will! 10/10 for me! And it's also nice that it's based on the Nerd's recent activities, like his movie or the amazing Hong Kong '97! It's funny as FU**! :D
a beutifully done platformer that is not only a treat to nerd fans, but a fun time for anyone looking for a good challenge,AVGN 2 is not a snack for a select few, its a desert that everyone can ejoy
First of all, this is massively overpriced. I played the game on Old School difficulty (3rd of 4 difficulties available from getgo) and beat it 100% in just under 3 hours. The difficulty is in a reasonable place on that setting, but the stages are incredibly short.
It also had several slowdown issues, which is inexcusable on a modern gaming PC. The developers have said it has something to do with their physics engine, but look at the game. There shouldn't be *any* slowdown on a PC with a dedicated graphics card, or any PC assembled since 2006 for that matter.
For the price, it's nothing but an expensive joke that does nothing but waste your time and ultimately isn't very funny. It's a crappy game riding on the coattails of a brandname, just like all those crappy NES games AVGN tore apart for doing the exact same thing. I guess it's OK with him now though, since he's profiting from having his name on this filth.
