Battle Princess Madelyn is an immensely enjoyable throwback to the old-school that is consistently charming. The soundtrack and the graphics are both a delight and the character design is wonderful. While it can occasionally be a little frustrating the optimism in every aspect will keep you pushing through.

Though not without its share of flaws, Battle Princess Madelyn stays true to the formula of the games that inspired it, eschewing artificial difficulty and keeping all the fun.

Partly extremly hard, but never quite unfair retro platformer with idiosyncratic charm, which properly picks up steam in arcade mode only.

Battle Princess Madelyn has a sweet, personal touch to it that shines through in the final product, as well as a message about the value of family.

Battle Princess Madelyn is both impressive in both visuals and audio. For better, and sometimes worse, the game has modeled itself after difficult games like Ghosts'n Goblins. Metroidvania fans will enjoy the expansive levels, however, satisfaction from level completion and boss fights are less thrilling provided the immediate backtracking you'll perform back through harms way throughout most of the game.

I really do like Battle Princess Madelyn, and while I like the way the story mode feels, I’m more partial to the Arcade mode. This is simply because the story mode can be rather unforgiving and rage-inducing, but at the same time, it’s also sweet and innocent. Battle Princess Madelyn feels like how a Metroidvania should feel, but it doesn’t explain core mechanics all that well and leaves you to just play the game and either succeed or fail.

Battle Princess Madelyn is a little gem, a game that fits in the tradition of platformer, made with great attention to detail by a team of just two people.

Whilst there has been a couple of issues reported with performance, these have been patched super quickly by the Father-Daughter team, and the game is everything I was hoping it would be. If you haven't taken a look at Battle Princess Madelyn yet, you really, REALLY should. Expand

The music is first class. Gameplay is brilliant. Two modes on offer, Story and Arcade. The developers have gone above and beyond with fast game updates. If you like retro games and a fan of GnG, then look further than battle Princess Madelyn. It's an absolute must buy with more than ten hours of play time. Expand

I was sad to learn earlier that the game would be delayed until later in the year, but I do think that the wait has been worth it!

There's a ton of stuff to do, many weapons to power-up, a great art style, an I also really like both soundtracks. I look forward to getting a sequel!

From theI definitely enjoyed this and for those looking for a serious fix of Ghosts n' Ghouls nostalgia then they can't go wrong here. From the carefully crafted pixel-art design to the gameplay itself, no expense has been spared in making this an authentic retro experience. Whilst there may be some bugs in the early stages they seem to be clearing them up pretty quickly. You will probably rage quit a few times too, but if we're talking about a genuine 8 bit experience then that's all part of the course. The story is fun too, setting this apart from many of the other imitators, giving it its own unique personality. I'd personally very much say check this out. Expand

The game pays homage to Ghost 'n Ghouls and other old-school games while giving us a game that feels fresh and new. I really digged how the game was made for the developer's daughter and how they've both worked on the game for several years now. Another highlight was the dual soundtrack for the game so that you can use either chiptunes or an orchestral soundtrack if you're feeling iike it.

If you like Metroidvania games that are challenging, then you'll love this one!

Causal Bit Games have some an incredible job rekindling beautiful memories of the 16bit era here, with some beautiful nods to classic titles of an era gone by.

Tight controls, beautiful visuals and oh, what a sound track. I wholeheartedly recommend this game to anyone with some skill over the casual side of gaming.

A very good looking, but also very overrated and flawed, game.

The game captures the GnG essence very well, both in the presentation and the mechanics. However, it's very unpolished and flawed.

Therefore, first, an advice: the demo does *not* give a good idea of the game, so, if you're interested in the game, download a pirated copy, play for an hour, delete it, and only then make a decision whether to buy it or not.

The story mode, which is has a metroidvania structure, as many reviews point out, is very confusing and lacks, without any particular design reason, the core elements of the genre - there's no map and no quest list. The maps are aimless. It's not clear whether the authors wanted to truly replicate the "artificial" difficulties of the 80s games, however, there are more modern ways of making a game hard in 2018.

The arcade mode is in my opinion, the most fit structure for a GnG game. However, as again pointed out by other reviewers, it's buggy. For example, at some point, in a difficult part of a map, spawning frequently happens on the beforelast checkpoint rather than the last, and it's obviously very frustrating. I don't want to follow up for hours wrestling bugs rather than focusing on the game challenges.

The lack of polish is very evident all over the experience. A few examples:

    - no keys remapping
    - no quick cutscenes skipping (one can skip, but it's still slow)
    - money is rewarded to the player in story mode, but it makes no sense, and it's not counted
    - the scaling routine of the title screen is broken, showing a terrible, smeared, look

Shame, because a modern, well written, GnG game was an excellent premise.
