If you are a seasoned turn-based strategy gamer, you can really sink your teeth into this one and get a run for your money. If you are not, you will still get both that run for your money and a crash course in applied survivor tactics.
Excellent game, among the best! Amazing atmosphere, enchanting design, superb art direction, world class voice actors, very nice particle effects and of course top notch turn based tactical gameplay. Open the Battle Log set to verbose mode in Options to see, how deep this game is. Don't believe the Steam ratings and the ones here!! Has bugs same way Fallout 1. and 2. had bugs for years then became cult games.
I followed up this game since his early access. I like the comeback of the hexagon fields with his depths to strategic and tactical decisions. The overall story arc is interesting and keep me going forward. There are some glitches with the battlesystem where you have to depend on some luck (dice roller in the background). I would recommend this game to everyone who is interested in a tactical and strategic RPG like game (X-COM, Jagged Alliance, etc.). Cannot wait for the Blackguards 2. :-)
Blackguards is an entertaining game and traditional role players will love many of its mechanics. The game could have been used to restore part of the essence of the great RPGs that were released during the early years of the last decade, but would require a story influenced by the decisions of the player and a good artificial intelligence. It would have been an excellent tool for Game Masters who want to display combats for his roleplaying group. As a videogame some things are left on the shelf.
Blackguards is an interesting game that tries to merge classical cRPG elements with some interesting novelties. But beware - right now it has a lot of issues considerably limiting its potential. Fortunately the story is great and rewards any suffering the game may cause. Fans of the genre should be very pleased, everyone else - wait for some patches.
With Blackguards, Daedalic takes a step back both from narrative and gameplay perspectives. A boring quest, uninspiring characters and a frustrating combat system cast a shadow over some good ideas.
It is one of this games, where it might take a while to get into it, but then you get hooked up!
Watched the hubby play it and liked the mood. Thought, okay, as him I love roleplaying games especially with the Dark Eye's rules and it does not look too difficult to beat the strategic tasks.
Actually, it was kind of difficult. I have to admit that I am someone who is more frustrated by crashes and so on (and this game definitely runs smooth and stable) than by having to try tricky situations again and again. I like the chalanges coming from things like that. Okay, the to-hit-chance IS frustrating, but on the other side after a while you get used to it.
I totally love the graphics style, the story and the good kind of humor.
This game might not be the first choice for someone who wants to hurry through the tasks and such, but for someone living an adventure it's perfect!
Blackguards is not that bad **** as some reviews might suggest, but it is is clearly much worse than most of the modern RPGs with turn-based combat. I'd still recommend it for fans of the genre.
Final verdict, Blackguards is a game I would recommend to any turn based strategy fan, for it’s world, content and solid gameplay and at it’s listed price point.
This game could have been very good, and some parts of it are very good. As a fan of strategy/RPG games, this game should have been very enjoyable for me.
The graphics are nice, and the game has a good variety of interesting monsters for you to fight. Battle maps are custom designed, which I prefer to random maps. There isn't any grinding, which normally would be a positive for me, but given how stingy the game is doling out experience (action points), this is a negative.
However, the game balance is terrible, many battles are boring because they are so easy, but then you will get battles that are very frustrating.
The character development is also extremely poor. It's very hard to know which skills/attributes work and which ones are next to useless. Even if you are careful you could end up with characters that aren't very effective because you choose the wrong things to upgrade.
The developers pretty much abandoned the game a few months after release to start development of Blackguards 2. I use to be a fan of Daedalic games but their last few games, including Blackguards have not been very good.
Blackguards is full of great ideas, but fails to really deliver on that potential. The story is okay but generic. Combat is so random that strategy is largely irrelevant, as even basic spells like Heal and Cure Poison have a random chance to do nothing. There are plenty of options for character customization in theory, but since each ability requires a specific trainer that you can't access until you've completed a certain set of quests, you have little choice but to simply learn what's available and every character ends up identical
It's one of those games that makes you want to overlook its flaws because it could have been a great game, but in all honestly it's just not fun to play as it doesn't feel like your choices ever make any difference. Not during quest dialog, not in character customization and definitely not in combat.
SummaryWhat happens when the only hope of a threatened world lies not with heroes in shining armor but in the hands of a band of misfits and criminals? Blackguards - the new turn-based RPG by Daedalic Entertainment - explores this very question. The player takes on the role of a convicted murderer, who with the help of a team of more-than-quest...
