It gets really scary towards the end of the game, when the madness slowly takes over.

Blair Witch tries to do its job but can’t keep the player's attention highly enough throughout the entire experience. Despite that, Bloober Team put some interesting new mechanics on the plate, but the inspiration seems to get lost at the same rhythm with which Ellis's past tries to emerge.

Even though the prologue is unexciting and finale drags on a little too long, Blair Witch’s atmosphere usually hits the right notes. [Issue#241, p.38]

Is the Blair Witch game a good fit for a franchise many have mostly written off by now? As a fan of said series, I would say yes. It absolutely has its faults, with the poorly paced gameplay and story elements being the worst offenders, but the amazing set pieces and psychological horror do a great job of raising the heart rate of anyone willing to venture through the forest. Ultimately, there are a lot of interesting ideas here, but they simply don't come together like they needed to in order to make the best of them.

Blair Witch is impressive and cleverly designed in many ways. Although there are answers to the abundant amount of questions that start to stir up over the course of the game, the end result still leaves many of those to be unanswered. The visual and sound fidelity provides an excellent foundation to the story that is being told. For psychological horror fans, it will scratch that much-needed itch.

Blair Witch makes a valiant effort to revive the franchise, and while it won’t generate the hype of the 1999 film, it’s a worthwhile horror title despite some flaws discussed above. Its biggest problem is that the execution of a lot of its ideas fall short of their potential. Bullet is a great addition to the experience, but poor pacing and not the greatest game mechanics hold this one back from being a must-play title. For hardcore horror fans or people who are really into the Blair Witch franchise, this title is worth checking out.

It may not be quite as groundbreaking as the film it's based on, but Blair Witch is the next best thing to the original movie, and it's definitely worth checking out for fans of the franchise, despite its shortcomings.

Blair Witch is great at building tension and letting you get lost in its unforgiving forest, but sometimes it takes that too literally. It mostly overcomes that, however, thanks to your magic camcorder and superb pooch.

If you don't mind a quite predictable story and a few flaws, you'll find in Blair Witch a very effective way to spend your evenings in total fear with a lovely dog and some good game mechanics to help you.

Blair Witch is a consistently interesting horror story with outstanding audio and graphics throughout. It may not be quite as groundbreaking as the film it's based on, but Blair Witch is the next best thing to the original movie, and it's definitely worth checking out for fans of the franchise, despite its shortcomings.

Navigating this world is more tiresome than frightening, especially once you realize that you’re not in peril most of the time. Instead, it’s more about how creepy you find wooden stick figures and walking around in the dark.

If you're in the market for a short adventure to tide you over for an evening or two ahead of September's big releases and its atmospheric premise intrigues you, go right ahead. However, if you're looking for the next smash-hit horror title, you're best going elsewhere.

At first Blair Witch knows how to present an effective horror atmosphere, but subsequently offers too much of the same and proceeds to deconstruct said atmosphere.
  14. Aug 30, 2019
The potential of the video camera, a central tool for solving puzzles, is partially thrown to the winds due to a puzzle structure that remains the same from beginning to end. What remains is still a game with a good atmosphere, which perfectly embodies - at least in the first part - the spirit of cinematographic films, also thanks to some clever and exquisite workmanship.

More a psychological thriller than pure horror game until the final stretch, Blair Witch won’t scare you so much as drive you barking mad (in both good ways and bad).

Where this game perhaps falters most is where most horror games do – the filler gameplay in between being spooked, which at the end of the day, might boil down to an individual's personal patience and tastes.

There's a lot of things to like about Blair Witch, from the way it invokes the imagery of the original film, to some inventive camcorder puzzles and intriguing depictions of trauma, but most of these aspects aren't given the time to really develop. There's the skeleton of a really good horror-based walking sim here, and while it's still worth checking out for horror fans, it feels more like a first episode of a series rather than a standalone game. A missed opportunity; all Woody and no real Buzz.

Despite being a fan of Bloober Team’s games, Blair Witch just doesn’t really work. There are far too many moments where you’re just wandering around frustrated in a forest trying to find something to do, and very few moments where the game does something unexpected to scare you. Clever gameplay ideas like the time-changing camcorder go pretty much to waste. Most importantly, despite a few good scares, in general Blair Witch isn’t really scary enough. It has really good storytelling moments and buckets of atmosphere, but we were ultimately left disappointed. It’s better than the 2000 Blair Witch games, at least.

Blair Witch is a great entry into the genre. Fans of horror games, with a heavy focus on narrative and walking, will find plenty of scares and edge-of-your-seat moments. However, those looking to dive deeper into the narrative of Blair Witch may come away a little disappointed.

It’s a shame the pacing does such a number on Blair Witch. It deals with some heady topics like PTSD, mental illness, and police shootings.
  21. Aug 30, 2019
A fine take on psychological horror cut down by bugs and wonkiness.
  22. Sep 5, 2019
An interesting horror game that never manages to escape the shadow of its ‘90s inspiration.
  23. Sep 2, 2019
Quite some un-intense idling, frustrating script bugs and some plainly disruptive elements will leave you disillusioned and horrified for all the wrong reasons.
  24. Sep 5, 2019
For all the gripping tension that its setting instills, Blair Witch can't maintain its initially frightening atmosphere and ends up losing it entirely by its conclusion.

The Layer of Fear devs deliver some effective horror with a side of smart ideas, though it's not without its faults.
  2. Sep 4, 2019
It's a bad sign when an indie movie made 20 years ago with a $60,000 budget remains endlessly more immersive than a video game made in 2019.
  3. Sep 2, 2019
The stakes are high in Blair Witch, as these woods aren’t known to take prisoners. But with two characters at the heart of this game, I only really care about one of them coming home alive.
  4. Blair Witch is lumbering and predictable, as horror often is, and the rattling moments come mostly from jumpscares. The rest is a tepid sort of horror.
  5. Sep 1, 2019
I gotta say, it turned out rather well. Not quite the creepfest I was hoping for, it's nonetheless inventive and atmospheric, and feels like it fits within the Blair Witch world without treading overly familiar ground.
  6. Sep 6, 2019
Blair Witch’s story isn’t bad, but it was barely compelling enough to pull me through once, let alone twice.

Scary and entertaining! Amazing graphics, vibe and soundtrack. Kudos to Bloober Team, they made a strong candidate for game of the year.

Aside from a horrible framerate dipping into the low 20s with a gtx 1080 ti, getting stuck in walls and objects and having to reload the game,Aside from a horrible framerate dipping into the low 20s with a gtx 1080 ti, getting stuck in walls and objects and having to reload the game, this had nothing to do with the blair witch. Such an interesting IP and such poor execution. I love dogs but good boy Bullet annoyed me repeating the same three sounds over and over again, taking a leak or rolling in mud. The story is boring, wandering through the forest and looking for objects is a chore and the last level made me roll my eyes. An absolute snoozefest. Full Review »

Very good horror for the fair price. Maybe a little bit too short but still best game of this kind this year!
