Borderlands 3 has surpassed the bar that its predecessor had set. The story is grand in scale, the humor is on-point and updated to 2019, weapons are diverse and the new Vault Hunters are unique in every way. Every BL-fan must pick this game up.

Borderlands 3 is the best game Gearbox has ever made. The weapons are interesting and goofy, the battles are intense and tricky, and the multiple open-worlds are beautiful and full of challenging missions. For Chinese gamers, it might be the most immersive 3A game in recent years because of the wonderful Chinese voice acting.

Maybe it’s not the most innovative game out there, but Borderlands 3 is a total must have for loot shooter fans.

Borderlands 3 isn’t a franchise altering game, but it does manage to combine great gunplay, an expansive world, and stellar co-op into a great overall package.

Those new to Borderlands will find some aspects confusing at first – Borderlands 3 is minimal when it comes to tutorials – but if they persist, they will end up luxuriating in the joyous, tongue-in-cheek, comic book-influenced fun it provides. Sure, it fails to turn the franchise into something new and futuristic in gameplay terms. But why would it, when its original conception was already immaculate?

Borderlands 3 is more Borderlands, and all the loot that entails. This proper sequel improves upon the formula with more guns, but more importantly, a stretch of unique planets to kill enemies on. The new planets offer more visual variety and a great evolution of enemy encounters. The tuning is clearly meant for more than one player, making a punitive experience at times for the solo Vault Hunter. Despite the formula growing a bit stale, Gearbox has expanded upon it in the right way, resulting in a great Borderlands experience.

Gearbox is at their best when they’re engineering the act of shooting something. If their game would just shut up and let the gleeful gunplay speak for itself, Borderlands would go a lot further. Instead, the gunplay is clogged up with meaningless loot, smugly unfunny jokes, and lots of using the same ol’ gun while waiting for the parsimonious skill point drip to finally drop. Where’s the glee in all that?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's more of the same which isn't a bad thing. There really isn't anything new or revolutionary over previous games. It could have been DLC and accomplished the same thing. Again, not necessarily a bad thing.

The issues that bring this game down over its predecessors is the story and the bugs. On the story side this game was just dull and went on entirely too long. Spoiler - by mid game every major mission ended with you doing a lot of shooting to get something and then the bad guys magically appear out of nowhere, take it all away and wipe out everybody on your team. It doesn't matter that they couldn't handle whatever the challenge was themselves, they always immediately disable you and there is nothing you can do about it. Rinse and repeat over the back half of the game and it just becomes incredibly dull. Towards the end of the game the villains are even considered invincible and have powers that, if they were real, would completely wipe you out with no chance of winning. And yet you still have the traditional boss fight at the end where suddenly you are able to defeat them even though you couldn't the entire game before. This just reeks of a slapped on story.

The other big issue is with the premise that you have a ship and can go to other planets. Yet every planet looks exactly like the others and they all look like the places from B2. One would have assumed that they would have used the "planets" as a way to show different biomes like perhaps an ice world or something from the pre-quel but they didn't. It is just the same biome over and over again. Really a letdown given this was hyped up before the games release.

On the bugs side the loading times on a fast machine is awful. I can boot Windows in 10 seconds and this game takes over a minute to start even on an nvime drive with more CPU power than the game needs. And then as soon as the load screen appears it freezes for another 10 seconds or so. And if you do an update and it has to refresh the shaders then you might as well go to lunch.

Once in the game the perf is generally OK but bugs are still plenty. I played co-op and my partner lost the ability to hear cutscenes after a while, the name indicators over each other's heads stopped working and there were stutters throughout. At the end of the game after a particular cutscene the next cutscene started playing (so many of them) and the subtitles from a cutscene a while back was stuck on the screen. My co-op partner didn't even see the subtitles. The subtitles stuck around every cutscene after that until we stopped playing.

As far as loot it was seriously screwed up compared to previous games. The best loot we got was from normal kills. Every time the game hyped up a vault or a cool boss we got white or green weapons. It was rare to get blues or better. It was particularly funny when towards the end of the game one of the NPCs gave us his "personal" weapon to help in the upcoming boss fight and it was a white for both of us. Overall the loot just seemed weak compared to previous games. I stuck with my lower level legendary weapons from mid game all the way until end because they simply were better than everything else.

Overall this is more of the same. It doesn't in any way move the series folder and could have just been a DLC and been just as good. The story and loot were bad compared to other games and it just went on way longer than it needed to with no real benefit.

Poor performance, mediocre mechanics, guns don't feel impactful, enemies are ok but generally not very interesting, the "story" and charactersPoor performance, mediocre mechanics, guns don't feel impactful, enemies are ok but generally not very interesting, the "story" and characters are incredibly annoying and cringy, the UI is bad. I enjoy the co-op aspect, mainly because it's one of the few co-op shooter games out there, but it feels incomplete and dated. Expand

PS4 version, apart from numerous glitches and low frame rate had the entire system crash twice. I have put over 2,000 hours into borderlandsPS4 version, apart from numerous glitches and low frame rate had the entire system crash twice. I have put over 2,000 hours into borderlands 1/2/ pre-sequel, and loved them all but can not recommend this to anyone in its current state. With sufficient patches and DLC it may be playable if it is ever on sale with a good PC, but don't bother with PS4 version. This game is one I have beaten and will never touch again, and for a series with as high replay-ability as Borderlands, that on its own makes me hope they don't ever release Borderlands 4. Expand

Storyline great, voice overs, acting, great, but a great game, takes making it a GAME not a movie, great. This is broken... Mayhem IS HOW YOU BROKE IT. I can go Mayhem 10, buy a ton of EPIC Mayhem 10 weapons, so that everything besides Mayhem 10 is too easy and boring, yet Mayhem 10 sux, because it's simply too much HP and nothing else, Everything about your playstyle, characters, abilities, useless, well except for phase BUBBLE, kinda helps. rest useless. Everything useless, except weapons, and for that, all we need to do is log in, hop around a bunch of spots and spend useless money to buy. Eridium, useless, quest items useless, builds, useless.... just get the best weapons, and then shoot forever, no fun, idiots have made a billion games that have done this before. what happened did you fire all the people that made Borderlands awesome and thing that just another set of people could make it so awesome? Spending money on big name actors and music might help? Didn't help. Go back to finding no name music, no name designers, and you might have a chance until then, you ruined my 2 decades long favorite game series. ..... morons.... Expand
