If you love that pastel paradise, magical girl aesthetic, you absolutely must grab Calico. I had a hard time putting this one down even after I had completed everything, and I’m honestly tempted to start a new game just to experience the magic all over again. Seriously, if you’re still reading this, just go buy Calico and get that serotonin injection you deserve. Your brain will thank you.

Calico does something unique and different, so if you’re interested in a management game with magical girls and giant cats, you’ll probably be able to forget its technical errors and design flaws.

Both a tranquil and amusing game that has its moment of natural charm in certain gameplay and narrative elements, but falls short when that charm feels forced. The lack of quality in its visuals and quest lines hinder it from being a great game, but still worth a look for younger audiences.

My eight-year-old self would have absolutely loved Calico to bits, I'm sure. Unfortunately, I am no longer a wide-eyed, curious 8-year-old girl--I'm a game reviewer whose tolerance for bugs and simplistic gameplay has worn thin over the decades. As much as I wish I could view Calico through the eyes of an imaginative youngster, I can't. Perhaps if you are better at embracing your childlike fantasies, you may be able to overlook Calico's many flaws and appreciate its imaginative, fairy-dust-sprinkled charm, but I feel that the magic will wear thin quite quickly.

For fans looking to pick up a new simulation game with a sweet art style and fun mechanics, they may want to wait a while before trying Calico. The game has a lot of potential, but in its current state the bugs and interface can make playing less of a relaxing escape to a pet café, and more of a frustrating battle to get anything done. Calico could have benefitted from a little more time to polish the rough areas in its gameplay, and maybe another look at cleaning up the graphics so the unique art and detailed avatars could really shine in the pastel wonderland of the world the developer has created. For now, though, the multitude of issues plaguing Calico make for an experience that's hard to recommend, though a few sizeable fixes could turn things around for the charming title.

The team is also responsive to customer feedback and requests. It's a little bit of a shame that because of it's weak start the reviews are still so terrible. You get to fly around, it's quirky, whimsical and a soothing little universe; and the developers are still adding active updates. I think its only problem (which has since been fixed) was that the devs released it unpolished, and while some of the negative reviews were true on release, by now it's what we wished it would be. For me, the content hits the right spot of not being too Much, whimsical quirky and cute- there is less "things to do" than other games but it's a wonderfully relaxing little play-box to wander around and decorate my yard in and for me I found that aspect balanced and relaxing as a break from the overwhelm of a lot of content. It doesn't have as much content as the $60 games, but for it's price I think it's pretty good. Probably the best $12-$20 I've ever spent. There isn't a single review here about it post-patches, so I want to point out that the reviews on Steam better reflect the current state of the game. Compared to the other games at that price point, Calico is pretty amazing. It's nice on switch, it's nice on PC.

For those of us who love the game, we're really into it, it hits all the right points. I found the game delightful, cute and relaxing. My only complaint is limited clothing options. It's very much to a particular taste though, so if that is not your taste you are not going to like it. I'm the sort of gamer that just wants to fly around somewhere pretty sometimes; it's not a very "busy" type of game. But it's a lot of fun and very goofy and whimsical in a way I haven't seen or enjoyed anywhere else!

In it's current state, I think that if the video on steam looks appealing to you, it may be worth giving it a shot in its current form.

I hope that people will give Calico more of a fair shake. It doesn't have the publicity of some more popular games that released weak/buggy and redeemed themselves later and it's a niche genre. But in my eyes it has redeemed itself and fulfilled its promise, and for $12 it's absolutely a steal.

Really buggy and glitchy on launch , but still a ton of fun.
Hope the update comes soon because at 11.99 it's a really good time.
