Call of Juarez features classic gunslinging action including duels, shootouts and barroom brawls. Players relive the days of the Wild West in numerous settings including local saloons and brothels. In the single-player campaign, players enter the world of two opposing characters equipped with contrasting weapons and styles. Ray is the retired gunslinger turned rough-and-tumble preacher. Billy, a sneaky and elusive man befriended and trained by Native Americans, is on the run. Authentic Western situations chronicle the cat-and-mouse game played by Ray and Billy. Players are forced to make split-second decisions to escape the grasp of Ray or get their hands on Billy, and outwit secondary characters throughout this Western setting. Call of Juarez leverages Techland's Chrome game engine which allows players to use objects found in the world as weapons or tools to solve problems. Graphics, artificial intelligence and multiplayer features will immerse players in the Wild West like never before. [Ubisoft] Expand

An excellent balance of gritty realism and game play. It's been a long time but Outlaws can finally hang up its guns and retire.

When was the last time you played a game where you could make your horse slide down the face of a cliff, shooting with the six-gun in your left hand while reading from the Bible in your right? [Oct 2006, p.84]
  3. Looking at the big picture, however, the story and the atmosphere in CoJ will be good enough to keep you going, so I wouldn't go as far as to say that the Billy missions ruined it for me. There were some that I found exciting.

A bit creaky in places, but this western shooter has plenty of character. [Nov 2006, p.78]

This is a game of two halves: one a highly enjoyable series of extravagant shoot-outs and the other a tedious crawl through two genres that just weren’t made to work together. [Nov 2006, p.112]
  6. Overall Juarez is not a bad FPS, with its unusual setting and unique approach; it’s just not as good as it could have been, suffering as it does from some real wasted potential.

There’s a multiplayer mode to be had, but it’s hard to recommend Juarez solely based on the fact that you can share the misery with friends.

With all graphic options cranked "Call of Juarez" rivals or tops "Far Cry" and "Call of Duty 2". The rabbit hunt was the best use of slow-motion 'bullet-time' that I've ever experienced. The outdoor nature scenes create a different pace for this game; it may not satisfy someone's need to race around streets and kill 6 million people. For me this game will be remember as one of the best that I've played in the past 25 years. Expand

The western style, cowboy music is great. The voice acting particularly Ray's and Billie's, are perfect. My ONLY objection is the dead eye accuracy and radar vision of the A.I. As the player I wish I could shoot and spot the enemy that accurately. Use your quick save function liberally. Other than that I wish more games of this superb quality in this genre would come out. Only Outlaws, and, maybe, the Red Dead series are better. Ray's storyline wasn't all that great - it was rather predictable and boring at times. The kid's story line was better, if sometimes he was too whiny for my taste. The graphics were kind of hit and miss - the scenery was absolutely awesome (especially the feather level), but the people had some strange shading to them. All in all, it was one of the more underrated games I've ever tried. I really enjoyed it. Expand
