I'm rather enamoured by the unique flavour of online combat presented by Chivalry. It's fresh and fun, and like the very best games is easy to get into yet incredibly hard to master. I've honestly not had this much competitive online joy since Battlefield 3, and to think a $25 indie title can provide a level of enjoyment up there with a $100 million game like Battlefield is testimony to the skill of the developer.

Excellent multiplayer slasher, full of sound, fury and blood. More object maps, please. [Dec 2012]

Chivalry is Quake to War of the Roses' Battlefield, and those seeking a faster-paced bloodier experience will undoubtedly prefer Chivalry's type of steel. [March 2013, p.65]

Chivalry: Medieval Warfare is up to a better start than War of the Roses. Torn Banner Studios have shunned any historical accuracy or character editing options, but their fighting system is easier to learn, while at the same time offering a surprising amount of depth. Dynamic rather than authentic, these skirmishes are much easier to enjoy.

It offers loads of fun and a simple but deep at the same time fighting system. Still far from perfect, but it could get closer to it with a few patches or updates.

Chivalry: Medieval Warfare is an interesting first person melee combat simulation, quite similar to the Mount & Blade series. The game made by Torn Banner Studios is funny and beautiful but doesn't have its own identity.

Compared to the similar War of the Roses you get tighter controls and more game modes, but it lacks in entertainment value.

I haven't had this much fun playing video games in years, and I play a lot. Its not a complex game, nor does it take itself too seriously, but the game is better for it. Charging into battle while your character shouts a war cry, or laughs like a lunatic is hilariously awesome. I find myself laughing with a big smile on my face the whole time I'm playing this game. Like I said, it is not complex, but there is enough depth for characters to learn new skills and practice techniques to become terrors on the battlefield, and yet not make the game aggravating for other players. If you die, its usually pretty clear how you made a mistake and offered yourself on a silver platter. Anyways, I could go on and on. Do yourself a favor and at least look into this game. Watch some reviews on Youtube, and ignore the haters on this site. Its awesome! Expand

Don't be fooled by the negative reviews, Chivalry and War of the Roses are two different games and they were made to be exactly that. IfDon't be fooled by the negative reviews, Chivalry and War of the Roses are two different games and they were made to be exactly that. If you're looking for a fun and quick slash 'em up, this game is for you! If you're looking for a slow and boring combat simulator, War of the Roses would be the correct choice. You'll have a blast on this game if you're not serious mcserious pants. Expand

The combat mechanics are nice, with a good use of shields and of the parry action. The graphics are pretty good, although the animation do seem a little slow from time to time (Especially when you absolutely HAVE to block that mother****ing battleaxe, but that your knight is too busy recovering from his previous strike to move...)

On the really bad side, there's the archery system, which is horrible, and can mostly be summed up by "Random spam of arrows for 10 minutes", most of the time. A lot of glitches on the hitboxes, especially when trying to parry a blow.

But I think the biggest problem this game has, is the extremely high learning curve required. The game doesn't have a lot of content, and you'll certainly abandon it before being any good on the battlefield sadly.

As much as I want to like this game, the frustrating parts of it really kill the fun of the game.

first off, the idea is solid, it just was half-implemented. melee combat is interesting and they did add a little bit of depth into it, but it is far from being a well done combat system at all.

beware of MANY issues with the combat, the biggest being lag, they have not addressed lag well enough, as a melee game is extremely intense and you MUST have split second control over your attacks. the lag in this game makes it VERY hard to properly land hits and block. not just that but many times, when you try to swing your weapon, it takes half a second for your character to actually start swinging, the input lag is variable, it can vary from no problem to holy crap, why is my guy acting so retarded? SWING THE DAMNED SWORD YOU STUPID IDIOT!

I dont like how they implemented the level unlocks, it is completely UNnecessary, and it ruins the balance. there seem to be weapons that are just plain WAY better than the others, and you often see very high level players only using those.

also, when it comes to parrying attacks, its a crapshot, sometimes the game lets you, other times it just decides to let the enemy's attack through, almost always ending up with you getting 1-shotted. not just that but the damage system seems a little out of whack, I remember getting 1-shotted many times while I had my TOWER shield up against the enemy, then they proceed to 1-shot me with a dagger... WHAT?!?

This game is a buggy and laggy mess, I can see what they wanted to do with it, but the execution was sub-par, leaving many major issues that really kill the fun in the game.

oh, one last thing, DONT TRY TO REBIND YOUR KEYS! it doesnt work... It will not rebind mouse buttons properly after the first setup, so if you choose something for your extra mouse buttons, its permanent, you cant change it.

Can you believe that after four years of beta, this game might actually be worse than what they started with? If you didn't like what consolesCan you believe that after four years of beta, this game might actually be worse than what they started with? If you didn't like what consoles did to Call of Duty, you can find more of the same in this game. This game STILL has bugs galore, and it is now being altered to drastically in time for an Xbox/Playstation release. They have nerfed the archer class to the point of complete uselessness, and the death knell for the class came over two patches AFTER they released data showing the archer class was already by far the least played class in the game. Presumably all in an attempt to create a fair environment for consoles and "auto-aim". Amazing concept marred by inept, amateur developer that lacks the resources to create a separate gaming experience on console and pc. Expand
