If you love the FPS genre then Chrome Specforce is certainly a worthy contender for your time, just do not expect anything vastly different here. Yes, we did enjoy the original, and this prequel is slightly better, however many will justifiably be left disappointed with the lack of progression that Tachland have made in those two years since Chrome.
-
At the end of the day the experience, despite how crooked it can appear in parts, is absolutely entertaining. From a budget game, that’s about the best you can ask.
-
SpecForce isn’t a terrible game, but it isn’t terribly good either. It’s a competent shooter, but the absence of everything that made its predecessor interesting is mysteriously gone. The graphics are virtually the same and the gameplay has been taken down a notch.
-
AceGamezUninspired and unoriginal, but not entirely without merit.
-
The final "silver lining" to this entire affair is its price: as a low-cost title, it's absolutely worth your money. TopWare has released this far below the current average for a new PC title, a practice I wish more publishers would adopt.
-
Although the levels are pretty big and they’re full of vegetation, they look, well, dated: some of the textures are really low res, the objects are kind of blocky, there’s no AntiAliasing option in the game and I couldn’t force it from the video drivers either (Catalyst 6.2).
-
PC FormatThere is amusement to be found here, for those with low expectations. [Oct 2005, p.91]
-
It’s cause is certainly helped by the price tag, relatively low system requirements and the fact you needn’t have even heard of Chrome to enjoy it. Sadly, though, even if the game did take the series to headier heights, it would still be destined to be ignored and forgotten in a world filled with Half-Life 2, Far Cry and so many other top drawer PC first-person shooters.
-
Sure, there are plenty of different touches on the gameplay. But how well-realised are they?
-
The level design and AI is monotonous, but there are some elements where the vehicles come into play and dinosaurs enter the picture (haven’t fought one since Turok) that show glimpses of imagination.
-
If you're going to acquire this game, do it for the offline mode. You can expect to get about 10 hours out of it, but don't expect much more than that. Good luck with the online modes.
-
Chrome SpecForce manages to avoid going terribly awry, but it also avoids any sort of fun or excitement.
-
It’s hard to knock Chrome Specforce too heavily simply because of its bargain price, however you have to question whether that’s a reason to invest in such a bland experience that only offers a mediocre interpretation of something we’ve seen on countless occasions. Gameplay flaws, bugs and glitches are one thing, a complete lack of imagination in terms of a videogame however is a distinctly different matter.
