DARKSIDERS GENESIS is a prequel to the series and sets up the stage for darksiders 1 plus we can finally play our boy strife

story: the council gives war and strife a task to defeat the demon lords that are posing a threat to humanity and with the help of some say friendly faces you start your adventure to save humanity

    pros:

the new diablo like game play is weird but a warm welcome to the series it brings something new to the table and still retains the hack and slash plus puzzle game play we know and love

the commentary between strife and war really feels authentic and brings more character development to both of them as you get to know them more

split screen and co op are a some what of a main feature although you can solo the game it is recommended to play it with another friend

the art style really shines even if the camera angel is diablo like you can still notice all the small details and all the background stuff

the horse riding is back after i complained about it in my darksiders 3 review and some maps are purposefully made for you to ride your horse as much as you can

they brought back war with all the combos skills and stats he had at the first darksiders and some how made him even more bad ass

the boss fights are unique creative and everyone of them is different plus every boss has his own area to fight them in

the endgame in this game is mainly collecting hidden stuff doing secret puzzles and 100% the arena either than that there is nothing

the game has somewhat of a replay value because you can play the game just for its game-play over and over

    cons:

some mini bosses are just super recycled to the point of the game even poking fun at that and at some point you can just shoot a red barrel and one shot them

the map is total trash and barely even helps you navigate

performance issues such as bugs frame drops and i even experienced 1 hard crash

the way they made strife in this game felt like he is really weak yes you can switch bullet types and you have a powered up mode but it still felt like not enough and most of the time i played with war although i really wanted to play with my boy strife

i finished the game after 12 hours which is really short and i really wished that the game would have been longer

in conclusion the main reason they made this game is budget issues as the developer said but somehow the managed even with a low budget to pull it off and create an awesome solid game which brings me to the final score which is a 8 out of 10 it almost dropped to a 7 but the game is charming and i really do want to the support the studio who made it

A solid 8. It would have been a 9, but there are some huge spikes in difficulty during boss fights. A really fun isometric action RPG with cool upgrades.

This was fun and fascinating. I love this «Darksiders». A good adventure and a fresh point of view on the franchise.

But not technically part is no very best. A lot of bugs and problems. And the bad Russian localization of text. I hope the game will be fixed.

Came out of nowhere and it suprised me a lot. I didnt expect this but it was great. Its short which is a good thing here and is fun diablo game with combat from previous darksiders titles. Theres a nice skill tree and skills progression system. But arena feels unnecessary and lazily done. Also the **** platforming puzzles in this game are pain to do.

Expand

Darksiders Genesis as the name hints at is a prequel to the darksiders series.. the story of before hell was released on earth and can be played either solo or with a friend..
Here you play as 2 of the four horseman, strife and the returning war from the original darksiders…
Right off the bat youll notice this isn’t your typical darksiders game.. this is a top down hack and slash game with light puzzle elements thrown in… hopefully we will still get a solo strife game bcause in genesis he shares the spotlight with war, and by the games end I feel as though war ends up stealing this spotlight…
Her in darksiders genesis you essentially go forward sometimes on horseback, most of the time on foot to take down enemies, throw switches and make your way to the end of a level to take down its boss and move on… it’s the same hook for all 13 hours of this games run time…
Strife and War both play different and their difference in abilities and upgrades ads a layer of planning, strategy, and approach to the world and battles…
I was initially inlove with this game… searching every crack and crevis for its secrets to insure I had the most powerful horseman as possible… and I enjoyed this hook until about hour 8.. this is where I started to become a bit over the game as everything starts to feel like its just too much… as you progress the game, much like the main darksiders games youll unlock new items that can be used in combat but more importantly are used as puzzle solvers… and the abundance of puzzles, especially those that hide secrets behind them is what just drained the soul out of me… pun intended… there is just far too much puzzle solving for how long of a game this is… don’t get me wrong… Darksiders gensis is paced perfectly… puzzles, platforming and secret hunting spread out the battles.. keeping the combat fresh and fun rather thaan a nussance… this is helped by the fact that youre rewarded with souls that you can use to upgrade your characters and buy cores to plug into a bonus/boost tree.. that enemies will sometimes drop during combat as well… but there is just so much puzzle and problem solving that it discourages me from wanting to sit and polay for long hrs at a time… I started to become just mentally exhausted playing 6 hrs straight of what started to feel like chapters that drug on forever… I came to a point where I told myself 1 more chapter, sleep and finish the game for review tomorrow, because this is starting to become so unfun to me… and its not that the puzzls are challenging… its just that theres too much of it… every secret is hidden behind a puzzle rather than just really well hidden like a god of war secret for example.. a game that darksiders clearly draws inspiration from… its okay for a secret here and there to be puzzle trapped.. but every single one is just exhausting after a while… especially in a game that’s 13 hours long… in my opinion no puzzle heavy game has any business being over 10..
that aside the gameplay and combat are a blast, playing as strife with his ranged combat, switching to war and brigning in that brute force while strife heals a bit… the back and forth and weapon variety between the two characters keeps you glued to your seat, keeps you engaged as every encounter feels just the right amount of challenging, and again thanks to being rewarded, I felt the urge to start fights myself.. and that’s when you know you have a great combat system in place… when you seek the fights…
back in the hub world you can also go into arenas and battle through 10 waves to unlock different rewards, but I just feel like the rewards are far too small to be worth the effort, so sortve a throwaway feature… all in all though darksiders genesis is a refereshing jump into a world of soul gathering that’s so fun to play at times you forget that youre playing a top down hack and slash game.. you feel immersed into this world.
    I give Darksiders Genesis
    an 8/10

It perfectly blends dungeon crawling with hack and slash and the horses are cool as fk. BUY IT.

As a diehard Darksiders fan, I was a bit skeptical about this one. Then my first half-dozen hours were mostly frustrating, but I'm glad I went back to it to dig in deeper. Awesome art style, super fun combat, cheesy-fun dialogue, great music, excellent pacing. Some of the other quibbles with camera issues and platforming problems are legit, but they fade away once you get used to them. IfAs a diehard Darksiders fan, I was a bit skeptical about this one. Some of the other quibbles with camera issues and platforming problems are legit, but they fade away once you get used to them. If you try to rush through it, skipping enemies, ignoring side quests, not using creature cores, upgrading carelessly, and doing the minimum in the arena, it gets punishingly hard and annoying by the fifth or sixth chapter. If you take the time to upgrade well, grind a bit, and really clean out levels, it feels more balanced and flows better. Definitely one of those games that gets better the more you play it. Expand

A great coop game to kill some time. Reminiscent of darksiders one but with extra modern elements and some fun inovative customization and progress. My only regret is that it does not have a "hard mode" and there was little challenge to the game. My father is strugling with it so that might be for the best tho.

After the abomination that Darksiders 3 was, I'm glad to see the franchise back to it's roots. Dungeons are back, the hack&slash combat is back, the Abyssal Armor is back and the finishers are back. The biggest joke is that this game has more content than Darksiders 3 and it costs less. Support Airship Syndicate so that we keep seeing games from them.

All in all, although the lack of budget is clearly seen in a way that there really aren't any cinematic scenes during the game and all of them are in form of comics and pictures, the game is a very pleasant experience and never lets you down.

Can't wait for the next and probably the final sequel!!

    PROS:
+ Simple, fun, and addictive gameplay loop --- run around and shoot stuff with style, do the occasional environment puzzle, fight boss, go back to home base, upgrade, do it all over again

+ Excellent music - somehow the music in this game is really good. Very distinctive and can be listened to for extended periods without being intrusive or annoying.

+Excellent core combat mechanics - The top-down view really helps you take into account all enemies surrounding you, and shooting from top-down view pairs up well with a gamepad (because playing a shooter on a gamepad is an exercise in frustration). The combat is a MONUMENTAL step up from Darksiders 3.

+ Very good art style - Darksiders has always had a good art style. No changes here.

+ Fun to upgrade - the upgrades consist of lateral movements as well as vertical movements. Vertical movements are fun - they make you more powerful and that's that. It's rewarding (Health upgrade, Potion upgrade, Damage upgrade, etc.). The lateral movements are also fun, because you're forced to choose which upgrades best suit your play-style (Creature Core Mechanic).

+ Raw potential of the game - As it stands, the game is very, very good. But if they add DLC? Option to play Fury, option to play Death, additional arenas, additional enemies? This game would easily be a 10/10 because there would be an overwhelming amount of content. This is the kind of game I wouldn't mind paying DLC for - it has earned the right to ask for more money because it is a good game in the first place. I hope the devs make lots of money from this game, because I am excited for DLC or better, DS:G 2.

    CONS:

    - Trash-tier story - Darksiders has always had atrociously bad stories. A five year old could tell a better action-fantasy story using action figures. Our protagonists are as one-note as ever. The plot is either kill this guy or fetch this MacGuffin (and my god is the Darksiders saga FULL OF MACGUFFINS. Strife is the first character to show even an iota of emotion other than anger, and even then, as a character he is as deep as a puddle. Additionally, for some reason the story seems committed to going BACKWARD in time. Chronologically it goes DS:G, DS:3/DS:2, and finally DS:1. And the thing is we're not really learning anything interesting in this quest to tell a backwards story. To be honest, the last time the Darksiders story got me excited was when in DS1, at the end, War says "No. Not alone.", and we see the 3 other horsemen coming to his aid. That was epic and exciting. That's a story that people could get excited about. Anyway, yeah. You will play Genesis for the extremely fun gameplay - not to know the story.

    - Bugs - Sometimes enemies get stuck in stuff. Sometimes you get stuck in stuff.

    - Camera issues - it seems deliberate that enemies obstructed from view are not highlighted like you are. Very very questionable decision. It hurts gameplay. I hope they address this.

    - Top-down view slightly hurts immersion and gives a bad first impression - When I first saw Genesis was top-down, I IMMEDIATELY wrote it off and thought I wasn't gonna play it, especially since Darksiders 3 left a bad taste in my mouth. I'm glad I was wrong, and I'm glad this game is great. But yeah. Don't dismiss it cause of the top-down view - what the game loses in immersion it makes up for in clean gameplay.

In an age where game companies are extremely duplicitous and are just out to nickel-and-dime everyone whenever and wherever possible, Darksiders Genesis is a refreshing light in the dark, showing us that there are still honest and good game dev companies out there. Play this game - you won't regret it.

It is not a diablo like game and that is good. Story wise very cool and i like the chapter design, which makes a replay easy. I love the character strife and in combination with war it makes for a very funny mix. The skills a cool and customizable through the core system. Cant wait for darksiders 4.

Отлично проработанная игра со множеством механик и способов взаимодействий. Красочная картинка, забавные диалоги и интересные загадки в стиле серии. Не хватило немного сюжета.
    Твердые 9/10 баллов.

I've been a fan of Darksiders series since the day of release of Darksiders 1. I'm a huge fan of ARPG genre and when I saw that they're doing the fourth part in ARPG style, I was rather surprised, my hopes were low because it's really hard to pull off a good ARPG game.
But OMG did they succeed, yes, they goddamn did. Game's amazing, the level design is nostalgic, characters have great personalities, they have some depth, unlike Rage from the third part, back and forth dialogues sound natural and straight-up funny in some parts, actually reminds me how i sometimes talk with my brother and best friend (those are 2 different people), combat system is interesting and somewhat challenging, esp later on (I'd suggest everyone to play on the highest difficulty possible), leveling/upgrading system gives some variety of choices, monster orb system is an excellent tool that allows you to customize and support whatever playstyle you prefer, puzzles are usually great and understandable.
The only two reasons why I'm not giving it a hard 10 are:
    1. Some bosses don't really feel like bosses, more like dodge-once-shoot-10-times-repeat obstacles
    2. I hate when I encounter a part of a map that I can't explore because I haven't found an item yet, and I have to complete 5 more missions to get it and then I'll have to go back to complete the old one.

Good game to play with friend. I don't know why different reviewers skip this game in their TOPs.WAR character is better for gamepad and Strife for K&M.
-1 for invitation system via obelisk.

The only bad thing about this game is its length! Highly recommend it for all of the Diablo fans.

The game is really good, but constantly under-rated. It is worth playing, if you like a dungeon crawler where SKILLS MATTER. Definitely worth playing

The character building is very well done with some heartfelt moments as they both cope with the guilt of their past. The combat system is great with multiple types of combos and weapons. The game can be played in Co-op as well with split-screen. The game is not very well polished as you will get stuck in some walls and puzzles. The boss-battles are difficult and rewarding. The worst thing about the game is that it doesn't have a pointer on the map and you have to guess where you actually are on the map which makes collecting collectibles irritating. Some parts of the maps are closed and need to be replayed again after getting a certain weapon which is unlocked later on in the game which I dislike. Expand

Although Genesis turned out to be a bit glitchy and buggy, and its parkour sequences are straight-out torturous, all in all it it’s a pretty successful experiment. [Issue#243, p.48]

Despite the fundamental changes to the series' viewpoint, Darksiders Genesis feels like a true Darksiders game, and banishes any memory of the lacklustre third entry.

What Airship Syndicate have done is show the world that the Darksiders IP is more than a one-trick pony, and for those who’ve not been tempted by the core franchise entries up until this point, there is now a very different sample of the IP with which to taste.
